Suppressors Suppressed .338 LM

Anyone have any experience suppressing this caliber? Currently having one built with a thread on "Muscle Break" but looking into the possibility of a quick detach suppressor to add to my options. Any advice welcome, especially on any known data of ballistics change using a sup. Thanks

I've shot a TRG42 suppressed with an AAC .338 Can. It's a longer, slower push shooting suppressed. I get fatigued a little sooner shooting suppressed than with the brake. But it sure is nice removing the boom.

I should have the approval to pickup my TBAC 338P1 in about a month.

You won't change ballistics with a suppressor, your barrel contour and length and weight of the suppressor can create a POI shift which, in my experience, is repeatable with all the big name suppressor manufacturers.

Check with skinney here. I'm sure others do as well, but I've shot his 338 NM before and it's remarkably awesome to shoot with a can.
He's running the SRT Arms .338 O2 Ti

We run EVERYTHING suppressed 100% of the time so I doubt he has documented any ballistic change compared to shooting without the can...but it's been a sub 1/2 MOA rifle out to 1150 with 300gr OTMs so far.

My 338 and 375 are both suppressed,AWC ThunderTraps. Its the only way to go. I prefer direct thread to QD.

You can look at Thunderbeast as they have a muzzle break and the suppressor attaches to that so you can still use your weapon with the muzzlebreak. I have a AWC Thundertrap on my .308 and love it as well ... just trying to suggest options.

My .338 Thundertrap is great and built like a tank. We have shot it on .308's my .338LM many times and my .338-.408CT wildcat with great results. I am getting another in Ti as soon as I can. PG

Thunder Beast 338P-1 on a 338 Lapua recoil is less then the factory Barrett or muscle break. Sound is as if a 22 LR.

Without a doubt a perfect setup.

I am running a SAS can that attaches over a SAS break on a 338. It is quiter than my buddies jet can on his 308. Recoil is reduced to what my badger thruster break did for the gun. Noise is very quite, sounds just like all my other calibers with a 30 cal can on them

if you go to the SH Facebook page, I posted an iPhone video of me shooting a 20" 338AX with an SAS T1 can inside the Mile High Shooting shop ... pretty darn good. No hearing protection, no ears ringing, it was my first time hearing a SAS can and I have to say it was really nice.

No it didn't don't know what that was from, nothing blew through during the shot.

My only thought is, this was a demo gun and maybe there was some unburned powder in there, who knows what happened, with only 2 rounds it's hard to say.

Very nice video Lowlight. Was looking at SAS's website, was the one you were firing a Brake/Suppressor combo? And if so was it a quick detach or thread on? SAS's price seems to actually be more reasonable than TBAC

I have no idea the model number or anything like that... I just said I never shot an SAS and Mile High said go back and shoot one.

Which model, the Long black Ti one, yes with a brake on the rifle.

I was crouched next to the rifle for the test- with no ear protection (I covered my ears for un-suppressed), and the sound with both suppressors was not just below 140, sound was ear comfortable. Like shooting a suppressed .22lr pistol. Reducing .338LM to ~130DB is very impressive.

If you look carefully in the video, it looks like recoil is pretty comparable between the brake, and both suppressors. If you want to split hairs it almost looks like AAC's product might have the most recoil by a slight margin.

People in the industry love to use the cliched "Clean your suppressor as often as you clean the muffler on your car."

But this is one category where it should apply. The 26-27" barrels provide good powder burn, to the extent there shouldn't be any significant buildup in the suppressor.

At $4-$7 per round, you'll certainly have have to invest in some serious ammunition to even hope to create a problem.

Lapua factory ammo is ~$6.50 a round, meaning 30,000 rounds cost $195,000.

What was the POI shift with the Beast? How repeatable?

I've been shooting my Desert Tactical Arms SRS in .338 LM with a suppressor of my own design (and construction) for some time now. The prototype can is a little on the heavy side but it will lighten up as we go. Sound levels are pretty good and I don't shoot the rifle without the can anymore. Is it hearing safe without plugs or muffs??? Probably not in reality but we've fired it out in the open with no other protection and its not uncomfortable. I'd say run it with the can and you'll be happy.

I've shot this rifle with a brake, ported can, and non-ported can...the ported can he does basically has a brake on the end which sacrifices a little of the reduction but does make a noticable difference in recoil reduction. Of all three I prefer the unported regular can by far, it still helps with the recoil and comparable in sound to a quiet 308 w/ supersonic ammo.

What was the POI shift with the Beast? How repeatable? </div></div>

We did not test POI shift. (the rounds were just going into the berm). The bore is centered with the threads and OD within .0005" however, and that is alignment is the controlling factor with regard to shift. POI shift should be minimal, and with a welded suppressor it will definitely be repeatable.

Other industry companies will spec that their suppressor bores are concentric within .010" and they feel that is acceptable, so we are well within at .0005"

Lowlight is right Tim makes a good product, our team purchased AI rifles and SAS cans to go with them from Mile High after a demo shoot. I had a great conversation with him at this years Shot Show. Only thing I can say about suppressors is make sure their customer service is good. Customer reviews, and more customer reviews, it is alot of money to spend and then when you have a problem they do not know you or there is no reply via phone or email. I was hot for a QD mount but decided to go with a DT mount for my Lapua.

I shot this short video at the range last weekend of a guy trying out my new suppressor. The sound isn't very good on the early generation iPhone, though you can hear the difference from the 308's going off in the background. There was hardly any bang from the rifle, pretty much just a pffft. The crack from the bullet was much louder.
