So I cleaned out a 8x4 closet/ space in my basement next to my loading bench last week., and it was the first time I saw the floor in 8 years. Looking at it empty is making me ill. I've realized that I'm not prepared at all for any type of SHTF situation. I'm starting to stock water, food, and medical supplies in this area.


What would you put in this? What would be something that is essential to you for a disaster type situation?

You want to find out what you really need in SHTF? Go to your circuit breaker and shut your power off for a week. Take notes each day. Even just for a weekend will teach you something.

People think I'm joking when I say that but I'm serious. Can't become a better shooter without range time right? Well, you can't become a better SHTF survivalist without the range time either. My brother and I looked for the worst camping weather and then camped in it to see if our bugout bags had what we needed/wanted for x, y, and z weather. Finally got my bug-in and die defending property about four years ago. Been changing our preps since then to accomodate. Focus is now how do we feed and water the 20+ people who will migrate to my property and how do we maintain proper order and freedoms in the chaos while retaining complete control of my property surrounded by people who now only have what I give them and who will undoubtedly think I'm not giving them enough.

To answer your question more directly though water (ways to obtain not just store), food, medicine, hygiene supplies, rechargeable batteries, and a solar generator. Loss of morale in a prolonged situation is a killer too, so never hurts to have games, ipod, dvd player or something like that stored up especially if you have a wife and kids around. I'm planning Friday game/movie nights for my SHTF crew. Dance parties in the barn, stuff like that too.

I have a bunch of books in there too, anatomy and biology, infectious diseases, im a contractor so I dont need it but a book about building. I’m still looking for a good planting guide that has breakdowns of when I should be planting things and what conditions each fruit/vegetable likes. I’d also like a book about blacksmithing/ how to build a foundry or forge.

It really depends how long you think you’ll live/ what you think will be the cause of the Shit hitting the Fan.

Basically I figured if I wanted to survive I’d need books to teach myself and others things we’d need to know.

Well, Im not a huge prepper because my wife and I own a local grocery store and also a liquor store a few miles away so I can grab basically anything besides medical supllies and ammo whenever I want, but.....

I can tell you that if you want something to stock pile that doesnt go bad, and I can promise some people would barter anything for is alcohol. Vodka and whiskey mainly, the cheaper stuff is what I would keep because it wont matter if it comes to that point. I dont drink but maybe a couple beers or margaritas a week, but I see people in our stores every single day, some at 8am. A lot of people HAVE to have it and would trade whatever for it.

Second on books of edible plants in your area, medicinal plants in your area, how to on doctoring and diagnosing.

One thing i rarely see people mention is batteries. I suggest a ton. High quality. Rechargeable are “ok” but are not as hold less charge and are difficult to keep alive for a long time. Sometimes they dont fit their intended devices as well. A high quality electric generator like a goal zero battery pack can come in real handy. But they are bulky and heavy.

It’ll be a walk-in safe; a bit small to call it a vault or secure gun room, but big enough for 4 adults and most of my guns. We’ll then relegate the huge safe in our closet to a semi-hidden closet in the garage or casita for storage of secondary weapons and more ammo. One good thing about those modular safe rooms is that it’s pretty easy to add some ballistic panels or even ballistic blankets for extra protection.

Add a hatch that leads to a crawl space or some other hidden exit and you don’t have an Alamo situation either.

Regardless, I’d add in a shelving unit with long-term food storage, medical gear, a small solar system, a couple radios, and maybe some water. Water is very, very bulky to store, so I wouldn’t put more than 5 gallons for each person you’re supporting in that room…that said, dedicated storage for water should be one of your first priorities.

There’s a reason we have a pool, water feature, and a stand-alone hot tub; and it ain’t because I like to swim.

I really like the idea of as much info on, well, everything, stored on thumb or hard drives in a faraday cage or bag inside a metal container. Hard copy books on the basics too.

Whatever you do, don’t be tempted to turn this room back into a catch all junk closet. Act like it isn’t even there except for this one very specific purpose.

I've gone to the DR every time I have a runny nose. I have chronic sinus infections. If you have symptoms of a sinus infections for more than 2 weeks they will put you on antibiotics. The antibiotics that I have been given like doxycycline and zpak, etc will treat anthrax, rocky mountain fever...the plague. Not joking. So you know...get a uhh... sinus infection and go see a Dr. Lol

I think most of us might have access to a laminator at work. What ive done before is google edible plants in your area. Use google images and there will be pictures of plants and other shit you didnt know you can eat. Print these out to use as a quick reference and LAMINATE the pages. Put all of your reference material in a 3-ring binder and itll more than likely withstand rain/mold or any other climate that will destroy regular paper.

Oh and another great tip...
Google the pill identifier codes. More than likely if you come across medicine it will be all mixed up with other pills. So you will only be looking at the shape, color, and a number stamped on each pill. How do you tell whats Antibiotic, headache, or bi-polar medicine?

No matter how much water you store, it'll run out. Being able to purify water after that, is litteraly life or death.
A fairly cheap version of a big berkey can be made with food safe plastic buckets and berkey filters.

A home made Berkey can be made with a clay (real) flower pot, and a plastic trashcan.
The flower pot must be real terra cotta, not that mixed with cement, or any other form. Red Clay.
Scuff the Inside and outside with rough sandpaper, and the bottom of the outside. Plug the drain hole in the bottom of the terracotta flowerpot, with a lab plug (black rubber). Wash the entire pot thoroughly, with water only, not soap.
Place pot inside plastic trashcan. It should fit down to the flanged rim of the clay pot. Fill with pre-coarse filtered water (not muddy, make a large sand Pre-filter to get most of large particulate matter out). Allow terra cotta pot to drain into plastic pot. About an hour per fill.
This is an improvised Ceramic Filter, and strains down to Ameoba and larger bacteria, and all cysts and eggs. Final treatment, after filtering is iodine or bleach, for viruses.
Pre-filter is a separate issue, and a large barrel sand and gravel pre-filter can be made to get muddy water, or duck pond water much cleaner before final straining.
All management at a non-electric level of sophistication is labor intensive. Think 14 Century labor with 20th century knowledge, and 21st century adaptions.
If you have flowing water nearby look up "Hydraulic Ram". Handy guys can build that, to pump water up to a reservoir, such as a large plastic pool (3 ft by 12 ft)

Ask your doctor for his last year copy of the PDR. The drug reps give them out each year. We all used digital means, but that big-ass red or blue book was a nice gift.

You can just ASK your doctor for a scrip for that usage. He may have product samples.

I wholeheartedly agree that spirits for trade is a good item. Vodka is a multi-use product anyway. Those people that are 8 am shoppers? They are going to be very early statistics. So are diabetics, and right behind them, other chronic illnesses, and unfit people.

I'm just going to address the trial portion of your notes.
I have long suggested to people who want to prep-up, that unless they practice they are going to be in trouble. So, I tell my friends, that once they fill up that 24 hour kit, with whater they think they are going to need, then Friday night, step out the front door, and walk two blocks with it on your back. That tests the quality of your pack choice. Then when you get home, set up in the back yard. For the night. Don't go through the house. Next to the door, have a note pad. Write down everything you wish you had, when you think of it ("I wish I had a..."). You don't have to stay all night, just long enough to decide you have reached a limit of your preparation. Only lasted an hour? Better re-think the entire kit. Got to midnight, but got too cold, or wet, or bug bit? Write that down, and address. Then push it next time after changing a few things. Or go for the entire weekend, then in winter. We did this once a month for 24 hours like clockwork. The kids loved it. When we started RV'ing, we also camped in the driveway for a weekend at a time, to determine, what do we need in here and what did we never use.
It was a great way to shake-down, the entire system including ourselves.

No need to shut off the power for a week. Just plan a weekend camping trip. Better if it involves getting a bit away from a car.

When you are done, go through the following exercise...

Make a list of everything that you needed but didn't have. You're going to want to add this stuff for the next evolution.

Separate all of the gear that you took into 3 piles.
1) Stuff used regularly
2) Stuff not used at all
3) Stuff used sparingly

Pull the first aid kit out of pile 2 and put it in pile 1. Ditch everything in pile 2. Critically evaluate everything in pile 3. Schedule a new trip taking into consideration this knowledge. Rinse and repeat until you don't have a pile 2.

Beyond that. Nonperishible foods that you eat regularly. No use buying pallets of rice/lentils/beans/etc if you don't eat rice/lentils/beans/etc. Incorporating your "emergency food" into your regular cooking insures that your emergency stash isn't useless when an actual emergency happens.

Water. Maybe. But, at least water purification supplies. We get in excess of 40" of rain annually, but not everyone is blessed with such liquid bounty. Water is bulky and most people live fairly close to a river/creek/lake/reservoir where fresh water can be sourced. Filtration and sterilization supplies don't take up as much space as jugs of water. But, you may need jugs of water too.

Fire? Matches, ferro rod and sparker, fire starters, tinder, kindling, etc. Even on a summer night, a fire is a moral enhancer.

Batteries? They're damned convenient, and things that need them won't work without them. Do you need the things that need batteries? On that note. Some sort of charging station- solar? How long is the battery life on your phone? Is your phone useful in this scenario? What else are you charging? Are you relying on electronics? Are the a requirement?

Ammo/guns? I'm not sure that any emergency scenario involves a protracted gun battle. Will there be roving bands of zombie-biker-looter-rapists in this scenario? Will you be hunting for game in this scenario? I'm guessing that everyone on this board already has enough ammunition to die upon (at least) a small pile of warm brass.

Remember the rule of 4s. 4 minutes without air. 4 hours without shelter. 4 days without water. 4 weeks without food.

In some situations a large "army" is going to invite more challenges and bad publicity... It will appear that you have something to hide. The private, large armies will be paid for by the oligarchs. Much more difficult to keep order in a large army... 4 trigger pullers and 4 wives / GF's / adult children, etc would be almost too large to manage unless they were well suited prior to the crash. Provisions for 8 would require a homestead that is sustaining.....
Doubtful anyone reading this will be "The Last Man Standing".... Outlive 2 million and then reorganize with the facts at hand.

Tushonka is a canned stewed meat especially popular in Russia and other countries of the former Eastern Bloc. It has become a common name for different kinds of canned stewed meat, not all of which correspond to the strict GOST standards.
