Last night Aero sent me an email stating the 15% off code would work in conjunction with the 30% off sale, so I got a 20” M24 .308 Solus barreled action, and a 15” black Comp Chassis for $1,360 shipped… And I’ve had a spare TriggerTech Special sitting in the box for about a year now. So, basically, I just built a $2,200 rifle for $1,500.

I wanted one of their new Obsidian actions, but for the price, I’m not complaining. Plus, I still have to call CarbonSix today and tell him what I’m going to order, so I’ll have 2 customs built on Solus actions, and a spare new M24 .308 Win barrel.

It didn’t work for me yesterday morning, but when I added the chassis to the cart, it took off another $85 on the chassis, but none of the barreled action, so from what I can figure, the 15% won’t work on the guns, actions, and barreled actions, but it will work on parts and accessories, I guess?

Well, my Memorial Day special Solus parts all showed up yesterday... The barreled action (20" M24 .308 Win), and 15" Comp Chassis. I already had the TriggerTech special sitting in the box waiting on something for a while.

The top-view picture makes it look like the barrel sits in the chassis crooked, it's straight, it was just a bad angle. Also, their barrel threads are damn nice, and perfectly bore-centric. We'll see how she shoots... If the Aero barrel isn't up to snuff, I'll just snatch it off and put a Carbon-Six on it, since they owe me one anyway. Probably go with 7 SAW II.

Also, I'm curious to know how concentric the chambers are cut...With a Hornady OAL tool & modified case gauge, hornady comparator tool (on the caliper), and a Nosler 210 RDF, it is 2.270" B-to-O pressed into the lands. I'll be seating my test loads at 2.250" since it's easy to remember, and only 0.020" isn't much jump to cause any inconsistencies. I'll be starting testing this weekend.

Aero is pretty quick to address "issues".

I just got a 17 inch chassis and the cheek riser now has a cut out to allow the riser to pull out in order to clean the gun. Pretty neat inline change.

I picked up a 6.5 PRC during the sale. Tossed her together in a 17 comp chassis. One issue. I got some factory Hornady 147g Match ammo, and some of them fail to eject. The port is too small. Even worse with hand loads. Unless I single feed, it's completely useless.

It is not a 6.5 PRC though and yes, the port does seem a little small compared to the lightened edition. I’m sure ap will make it right, but I don’t think they’d make a rifle that didn’t eject the brass? something wrong with your ejectors.?

My money is on operator error... 9/10 times that's the case.

Live rounds, it will not cycle factory match ammo consistently. The tip sticks and the bolt release needs to be pressed in order for the round to eject.
Keep in mind, this is a brand new barreled action, set in an aero comp chassis.

Sounds like noting is "wrong" at all. Just a long loaded round that doesn't fit out of the ejection port.
Fire that round and you won't have an issue.

I could accept that if it was a hand load. It's not. When the RO calls for clear, and I have to partially remove the bolt on stage just to clear the chamber with factory ammo, it's not ok. It's not one round. it's 1/4 of every box or more.

You are correct, they have a pretty damn big port size... I'm not buying the gripe. Also, who the fuck is stupid enough to shoot a 6.5 PRC in comps? Talk about a barrel burner, then add extra heat to it with minimal cool down times... Dumb idea to run any magnum in a comp, IMO.

I can't get above 60 with my current vise setup.

I have go and no go gauges and the rifle passes both tests.

Has anyone played with barrel torque? I will order a difference vise if 75 ft/lbs is absolutely, 100% required.

I've used 50lb on badger 2013 and impact action, on short action calibers. What barrel vise are you using now, and why does it limit to 60lbs?

There's no limit.

I'm just a moron and i'm using a home made set of vise jaws with my standard bench vise. The barrel slips at 60 ft/lbs and I can't get it to tighten down enough to go beyond that.

I ended up scratching the cerakote using dry wall tape in an attempt to increase the gripping power of my vise setup. Not too concerned about cosmetics so that's not a huge issue. I just want to make sure i'm doing things to "right".

This is my first build, hence the lack of appropriate tools.

A viper barrel vise is handy and 75ish bucks, I use one for upto 100lbs. I've got a wheeler too, it's slower to use but can handle more abuse. Put rosin or sugar in vise jaws for more grip on barrel.

FYI, measured my solus ejection port and it is 2.960. I've got some 147eldm 6.5prc ammo, so I can measure oal on it. Accurate 300wsm binderless mags are 2.980 max oal. I guess if Hornady ammo is over 2.960, and under 2.980(to be mag fed), it could fail to clear port when unloading a loaded rd.

Edit: didn't get a chance to measure that ammo last night. 2 solutions would be an endmill cut on port like stiller does or seat bullets in a smidge.

I have a Viper vise and use two small pieces of Lether to hold the barrel, it has worked well for me. If you keep an eye out, the viper sometimes will go on sale for 65 dollars, that is what I paid for mine.

No worries, I had a bad day and it hit me wrong. I just used a cheap set of calipers in farm shop, I think ill remeasure port at the reloading bench. If you like everything about that rifle, you could always have an endmill cut in ejection port like some stillers have. Not ideal, but it works. My 2 6.5prc for a badger have a .160" freebore, not saami .188, gives you some room to grow chasing throat and not get too long for mag.

Buddy made these for our Solus chassis rifles. Brings mine to 22lbs with 2 sets of the Salmon River Solutions weights. Ours differs from SRS internal weight in ours is heavier and thicker.

Well, I just got the barrel and was able to assemble my Solus-Cadex build without modifying anything to my surprise, and I can even fold the buttstock over the bolt handle.

Solus Action, Preferred Barrels taper less 6.5x47 Lapua 24-inch, Cadex Light Comp Chassis, Area 419 Hell Fire Break, Stiner T5xi 3-15x50 SCR.

Now on to load some 130 OTM Berger's and 140 Custom Nosler's and see what she likes.

Got her all bolted together. Gonna get a nice zero on her on Monday.

This is the new obsidian action. It's REALLY friggin slick. Bolt lift is pretty light and it was super easy to put together once I got the proper bench vise setup.

Aero does not warranty firearms that function as intended and on bases of personal preference for hunting. You stated that firearm functions normally. For the fact that the firearm does fire and cycle when shot, shows that the dimension of the chamber is fine and without issue. Chambering a live round to only remove that round is unsafe and not advised. When chambering a live round, the dimensions will be different after it has been removed from the chamber. I understand why you would like to be able to unchamber around and wish there is more I could do for you but this is what I am being told.

After he told me to just fire off that round to clear the chamber, and just deal with it. I decided that Aero Precision is not a company I wanted to do business with any longer.
