Tikka T3 owners, need your input

If you were to purchase a chassis style stock as an upgrade for your T3, would you pay more for a folding stock or simply want a rigid fixed stock (assuming adjustable cheek and LOP on both)

Additionally, are there any features you would consider "must haves"?

I'm not really sure when the folder would be that important to me. Far more important would be the ability to use the AICS 300wm magazines so I can stop single feeding my LR rounds.

fixed. +1 on the mag system. For me light weight and a design that doesn't hangup in my hunting clothes would be primary. I assume full stock adjustability would be part of the design. Comfort in cold weather would be nice too.

Since the shooting, and to some extent the hunting, I do, involves getting in and out of cars, a folder would be a nice idea.

Looks like fixed is generally preferred so far.

FYI, making the T3 mag fed in the longer calibers which require the 300Win size mags, is a difficult proposition. This is due to the geometry of the magwell in relation to the trigger. Even the Roedale stock is only for the standard calibers. However, where there's a will there's a way.

Rob W, what in particular do you like about the Anschutz rail? Is it for adding accessories and if so, is there a particular one you have in mind?

Yup, adding the rail would make lots of accessories available, specifically handstops and such available for shooting highpower and prone matches. I'd love to purchase a T3 stock that opened up that many opportunities to practice. With the rail, we could switch from bipod/scope to sling/irons on the same platform.

Well, this is disappointing. Thanks for the information. I was unaware that there was a technical/mechanical limitation. I've been in contact with 2 or 3 different companies in the last year who've said they were going to come out with DBM to support the 300wm mags, but not one has explained that it was any more difficult than for .308 or .223. I thought the delays were due to lack of demand, which still may be true and actually compound the problem if there are hurdles to be overcome.

RobW, ok I see where you're coming from, maybe something similar to the TRG rail?

Jrob300, I'm going to look into it a bit further, but the space limitation is at least one reason (I think) why the T3 mags have the mag catch on the front. I think it's doable probably with some finagling, or as a last resort may have to make a special cut in the mag somewhere to relocate the catch point.

Have you considered the two-piece type similar to the TRG?
That option gives you the ability to design modular a 'buttstock' and 'forestock' systems of any type desired to include, perhaps, a folding system.
Then the forestock's can also be modular with many different options. Ex: you could have one setup for benchrest, F-class, NRA, etc.
You could mix and match buttstocks and forestocks depending on hunting, competition or other uses.
To answer the question:
a rigid stock would be adequate. A folding is a nice to have.

For me, has to be rigid enough to not move due to sling pressure. That eliminates two piece stocks, folders, etc. Of course YMMV.

I would definitely prefer a folder.
It does besides form the ease of transport also have the possibilty of easy bolt removal, as the cheekpiece often will be higher than the bolt.
That way the buttstock just can be swung away when removing the bolt or cleaning the rifle.

Would probably go more for the fixed stock option.

One thing for me would be the provision of a steel recoil lug over the OEM aluminium offering. However I take it that with a chassis system you would machine the lug into the stock? (bear in mind that the recoil of heavier calibres is enough to start pushing into and marking an ali lug).

RobW, I'm not a highpower shooter so please bear with me, which part of the stock flexes when slung up? Is the forend pulled down away from the barrel? Is there a lot of pressure on the rear sling mount?

Spuhr, yeah one of the downsides to the T3 is that the bolt has relatively long travel, and has that firing pin indicator sticking way out.

Jagged, that definitely seems to be a problem with T3's.

The next question then becomes, for the adjustments on LOP and cheekpiece, would you pay extra to have quick adjust features, or are fine with allen screw type adjustments that require a tool?

Forend flex. The sling is only attached at the front (generally, handstop with sling swivel in a rail).

The long action mag fed is possible, just a little trickier is all.

Rob, how important is infinite adjustability in the position of accessories like the handstop? Do you really need a rail or will a series of threaded holes at a certain spacing do the trick?

VicV, not yet, we are still testing and tweaking it a bit, hence this thread. Unfortunately I can't really give you a timeline, a good lesson I learned while at Magpul. We're hoping to have these in time for Christmas, but you know what they say about "hope". So far people are wanting a fixed first, the one in the pic is a folder.

Thanks! It's a little more than a factory polyurethane TRG stock, but we haven't got it on a good scale yet. I'm hoping to compare it to factory TRG folder within a week or so. I THINK it will be comparable if not lighter. The forend is aluminum, but it's also smaller than the TRG, so the stock isn't a brick by any means.

If you should do this seriousely the LOP and the buttplate heigth SHOULD be quicly adjustable and not with an allen key.
Today the majority of the sniping rifles are still left at the 60th with fixed LOP and no adjustability for the buttplate height.
For a shooter who have the oppertunity to change the rifles LOP and buttplate height betwen different shooting positions will do it.
For me there is a need for approw 1,25" longer stock when shooting prone.

And when spending rediculous money on guns, scopes and scopemounts, why settle with something that not is optimized for the task.
Furthermore I don't belive that people who actually never have used a qucikly adjustable stock will understand how usefull it is before they have tried it.

the T3 will work from the LA AICS mags, ive even built a couple of .338lap T3s.

I think its great that T3 parts are comming out all over the place.

We've got chassis on shelf ready for the long caliber T3's like the .300win mag. plus cheek pieces and spacers and butt pads, The hold up is the plastic side pannels, but that should be sorted out this next week. then we won't have to rely on AI anymore for the plastic parts. The folding version is to follow shortly. Also the Raptor stock will be T3 compatible. We've just bieng playing with the sig sauer SSG 3000 ( sauer str) in the raptor too.

all great news for T3 fans.

Since the thread is a request for input, I'd like to comment on the foldable rear end. I'm sure it functions very well when it comes to ergonomics but that some things might be caught up in it, eg branches/clothing/kit/etc.

If there's a way to hide the inner workings a bit, I belive that would be beneficial.

Massoud,

I would like to see a cheek rest that is adjustable for forward and backward movement (being able to move the cheek rest closer to the action). In prone if you are shooting with a handstop then you will find that your head will be positioned much closer to the scope/action and I find many many stocks with adjustable cheek rests have the cheek rest too far back with the length of pull adjusted in the correct length.

Vettern, thanks for the feedback. That has definitely been on our mind, hopefully testing will show us exactly where we can improve.

gszeto, point noted, I think you'd be happy with what we have. With the T3, it will become necessary to move the cheekpiece to remove the bolt from the action, because the bolt is so long.
