Tikka T3 Thread

Waters rifleman 10 round 223 showed up today. Quality on these mags is great. They lock up tight, feed well. Prairie dogs are screwed now. If you need an extended option and don’t want to leave the smooth feeding of the factory mag looks like there are options. Plus they fit a 2.6” 223 round. Might even try a day match with my 223.

I have a fairly uninteresting question that I’m sure has come up before. I’ve searched quite a bit but couldn’t find a definitive answer on the variance between magazine types so here it goes:

I have a Tikka T3X .308 CTR in a KRG X-Ray chassis. MDT had the best BF deal in town on magazines so I bought one 10 round metal w/o binder plate, one poly/metal, and two polymer mags.

Are all of those going to work with my set-up? I saw on KRG’s website they reccomended the non-binder plate mag for Tikka’s that measure 2.950".

The MDT w/o binder plate mag = 2.960" so I should be clear.

However both the poly/metal and polymer mags = 2.870”

Anyone have personal experience or success with all three types?

So I got myself an MDT Oryx on Black Friday.

I Kind of get the feeling that maaaybe the action isn't sliding all the way down into the chassis. Is it at all feasible that the recoil lug wouldn't fit in the slot in the T3 action? I don't want the action screws to have to take the recoil impuse, obviously.

It depends on how long you load your cartridges. Factory cartridges work in all as far as I know. So just measure the COL of what you want to use. If under 2.87" all of your mags will do. Above then the one without binder plate.

Thanks for the clarification. I’m new to bolt-actions, large calibers, and the AICS pattern so this is all extremely helpful.

I am using factory anmo for the next year at least until I accrue enough brass and knowledge to safely reload.

Do folks ever reload and still keep their COAL under 2.87”? I see that correlation a lot and didn’t know if there was a reason why people extend past that length when reloading

My Spuhr hunting mount came in to replace the Hawkins Hybrid rings that weren't quite tall enough. What a well built mount! The wedge worked great for getting things level, and the 34mm height worked perfect for a 50mm objective with a Sendero profile barrel.

Depends on the throat. Generally you use a bullet comparator to get a base to ogive measurement and back a few thousandths of an inch off of it to back the bullet off the lands. The COAL is what it is and you can buy mags accordingly.

Generally i think a 308 will be very tolerant of a jump. With some bullets you might not reach the lands if you want the bullet to be in the case. I go by the boat tail to straight junction of the bullet being where the neck transition shoulder meets of the case. I use that as a starting point. It has served me well with at least 10 308's over the last 15 years. I have never reached 2.87" yet as I only used 155, 168 and 175's.
One trick to find your lands is to take an empty case, put a very slight dent into the neck. Some 5 min epoxy only on the inside of the case neck then stick the bullet in about 1/8" and chamber that. Leave it chambered for half hour and you have a dummy. This will let you know where your lands are at which COL with that bullet. You can then check your jump with the shoulder meet boat tail junction method. All of my 308's shoot the same load very well from .2's to .5". All well off the lands.

Direct from David waters in AU. They are expensive, but really the only other option. You just email him, he was quick to get back to me. And believe it or not both mags I got came from Australia faster than it’s taken the last couples boxes of mine to get across the US. I’m not upset about the price, they appear to be a very nicely made. Function has been great for me so far after a little mag latch sanding

Thanks. I bought the Mountain Tactical billet mags. I can load really long with them. They’re not cheap but they’re not $127, either.

Bix 'n Andy anyone? I love Tikkas but I shoot better with other rifles due to lighter triggers (TT / Jewell) - saw B&A goes down to 4 oz but can't find one anywhere. Anyone try 'em?

KRG says down to 2lbs. I cut an aftermarket spring down ~2.5 rungs in order to get the stock trigger down to about 1lb, but my other rifles are at about 6oz. Not end of the world, but would be nice to have them all the same. BnA seems to be the only one offering pull weights below 1lb.

I run mine at 3.5lbs, but it doesn't feel that heavy. I think it's the adjustable shoe geometry that makes it feel lighter than it really is.

Thanks to the members here on the hide, I was able to remove the barrel on one of my T3's.
Easy....
1) Brownell's vise with 1.15" steel bushing- Tikka is 1.125 at the receiver
2) Lead patches to take up gap and provide friction
3) Wheeler #1 wrench- flipped end
4) Masking tape on receiver
5) Big fucking hammer

No marks left...... cheers

yeah def #5!! to be a little more technical, BMF hammer. i'm going to have to try lead patches or whatever next time as my barrel kept slipping. eventually chucked it in my machine vise which of course marred the heck out of it, but don't think there is a big market for tikka factory take off barrels so no big deal.

Surprising how expensive just the action or the bolt is. I got my barreled .308 CTR used for $500 a month or two ago.

Did I just get lucky?

It seems like you’re better off buying the complete gun and just selling the stock and barrel since it’s about the same price as just the action

Yes, you got lucky, IMO. Unless the barrel is shot out or something, but they last a long time, especially in 308... so I doubt it is.

I looked every other day for a few months to find someone selling a used WSM so I could get the bolt face, I wanted to pay 425-450, because thats what I felt was fair for standard-old used T3/T3x... I couldnt get one, I kept getting outbid. Ended up buying a new one when they got back in stock for something like 560, which is normal-ish.

Oh man, i was looking a Sako factory warehouse stock situation today.
Spotted that there was 2 CTR modles with a 24" barrel, adjustable stock, but the caliber was 6.5PRC.
I am so keen to do the order, but im not sure.
Barrel life of my style of shooting, it is a blank for a year.
But that, that there is a CTR model available in a new caliber now, 6.5PRC:).
Can the short AICS magazine be fixed to work with this caliber?
Because i wont be using that factory one for a day.

I am looking forward to seeing a 6.5 PRC CTR over here. You might want to try the CTR mag first, the TRG mags work well with 6.5 SAUM cases. Can you get Lapua brass in Finland? Can’t find it in the US.

I run 6.5 PRC with CTR mags. It works, but it’s not as smooth as my 300 WSM Fierce Fury was. You’ll have to tweak the feed lips to make it work

Those are definitely last gen mags. Don’t get rid of them! Hopefully they pump out an extended 223 mag of their newest generation but I’m not hopeful anymore.

Does anyone know if the Tikka T3X Veil has a heavy enough barrel (i.e. sufficient shoulder) to mount a suppressor? I'm specifically looking at the .308 version in either 20" or 22" that is threaded 5/8-24. It appears that the Veil and maybe the Roughtech have a slightly heavier barrel than the Lite/Superlite.

I sighted in a 7mm Mag Roughtech for a co-workers brother. It looked similiar to a CTR profile barrel that had been fluted. I never pulled the factory break, but I would think you could put a suppressor on one. He could only find Hornady Superformance 139gr GMX. I bore sighted it, first two shots got him a 100 yard zero, and had him shoot a 3 shot group that was just over 1 moa. I put my Magneto speed on it and fired 5 quick shots and four were touching. The ammo was rated at 3190 and the 5 shot average was 3215. His scope was a Leupold that he could dial for elevation, so we zeroed it at 200, entered everything in Strelok and he hit center of a plate at 419 yards. Pretty impressed with the rifle.

Should not be a problem.
This guy from Finland has Tikka with the same barrel, just different camo on the stock.
There´s a 5/8X24 tread on the muzzle, it is a bit thinner than CTR barrel on the area where the barrel is fluted.

I try to hold that Tikka like it on the picture, for a while😅.
Thought that i put my 260rem CTR in to a X-RAY gen4 chassis and put this in to a Whiskey, but then if i thought, that
this caliber barrel is dead before the summer on the pace i shoot, should i just put this in to a X-RAY.
Similar ergonomics, but Whiskey is just 10 times better.
I try to find the MDT AICS 6.5PRC magazines somewhere, or try to mod one of my old MDT magazine.
I really dig MDT magazines, zero issues with the Canadians.
Brass im quite sure will be Lapua, but bullets are the problems.
Vihtavuori manual has only Lapua 144gr FMJ the load data, no Scenar´s.
I would have N555 and N160.
Has some one loaded Scenar pills for PRC?
Copper creek has Scenar 139gr ammo for this.
