Let's see em if you have em!!

Thinking about building a 16 or so inch .308 bolt gun for the truck. Never know when you gotta pull over and get to work.

.308 because it's big enough for damn near anything within "out of the truck window" range and ammo procurement is too easy.

Thinking xlr element or McMillan/Manners

Glass: PST? Razor/MK5 18x? What do you think?

Edit: I'm obsessed with bolt guns. I have a shorty .308 gasser but it gets no love.

Ruger Gunsite is what I think of. With a 1-6 optic would be good.
I wouldn't want anything behind my seat that I wouldn't mind losing. My truck is a single cab toyota pickup with no room for a locker back there.

I'd look at one of the pkg rifles XPR, 783, adl, axis, mossberg. and cut the barrel down to 16-18" You might have 400 into it so it's much less painful when it gets all dinged up. You can buy a crowning kit from Manson reamers to cut it down yourself. They can be very accurate.
In my truck I have 1 of these 3. 760 carbine in 30.06 1.75-4.5 3200, 30-30 trapper 16" or ar 18". I have had a 26" 308 and I have no idea how it would work in a stressed situation.
If you want real compact I'd look at a folder lss stock or similar chassis for a shorty bolt gun. I think you are better off with a gas gun or something like my list for quicker rate of fire. The 760 below was shot at 100yds cold bore and 3 follow up shots with 180 core locs. The handload it likes most is a bit better with with a 165 ballistic tip. Used you can find them in the 300 dollar range and they tend to shoot far better than the people shooting them. It is my preferred hunting rifle for tracking game

I agree. I don't consider a suppressed rifle a truck gun either unless that package rides in the truck full time. Most guys I bet aren't doing that. My truck gun is a sks. It never comes out. Cheap and effective. Lots of good choices out there.

Living in the country so, I almost always have something riding shotgun. Usually it's a 16" r700 300bo. Sometimes its a 20" 308. During hunting season it's my 300wsm with my hunting pack, just because I like to sneak off when I can.

I Built a 7.62x39 with .308 Dia l. bbl finished at 16.25” Topped with a 3-15 xtr . I love that thing. It shoots .75” all day with hornady blk and a lil better with hand loads. At the ranch Its produced a pile of one shot drops on pigs and whatever else. Taken it to 300 yds with no issues on terminal performance.
