Went bear hunting this weekend. Shot this 6' 350# bear at 374 yards with my 338 Lapua. 300 grain MK at 2750 slamed it sideways, rolled it over and it was DRT. Hit it in the shoulder socket, through the top of the heart, took out lungs, made a golfball size hole in the far ribs and stopped just under the off side hide. Skinned and gutted it that night and went back in with horses in the morning to get him out.

I've heard lots of stories about horses getting mighty skittish around bear blood due to them eating meat (the bears

How did your horses react? any different than elk?
My horses never look twice at elk blood, just heard bear is different.

3 of them had been around bear before. the one I rode in on had not but didn't even flinch when I put my bloody hand to it's nose. Ron was happy about that :)
I really liked using the horses. It took Ron and I 1 hour to hike out the night I shot it, packing only our rifles and small day packs. It took the horses 21 minutes to cover the same terrain with us and 260+ pounds of bear meat, bones, and hide.

I took a 6 1/2 foot boar in Idaho in 2008 similar to your. We packed him out on mules so not sure of the weight. A 338 win with 210 barnes did the job. He was old with a broken cheekbone from a fight, I guess. Nice bear.
