I attended the the March 30th - April 1st 2012 Precision Scoped rifle course in Saxton Pa instructed by Sean Little Vapor Trail. It was a three day event with some class room instruction and lots of fun shooting steel out to 815 yards. The area is nothing short of beautiful in Western Pennsylvanian and got to stay at Dave S's house. It is in a perfect area and Dave and Sean were great hosts with always great food and conversation to go around - probably lots of tall tales too but we will leave that alone.

We started out Friday morning with class room instruction on the basics of shooting Precision rifles and also how to use our optics. Sean instructed us "Jack Wagons" as he likes to call us on the finer points of shooting. After the morning classroom session we went out to the 100 yard range to get the zeros for our rifles. Sean spent time with all the students to ensure we were properly aligned behind the rifle and proper trigger controls - no gorilla trigger manipulations were allowed. We had several bolt shooters and a couple of AR's so he spent equal time discussing both applications. The afternoon session was shooting at 500 yards on paper which ended up being very interesting due the changing wind patterns. I know I fought the winds.

Saturday we started the day with class room instruction on ballistics and ballistic programs, how to determine distance with your optic and how to obtain our DOPE for the rifles. After several interruptions to view turkey's out the window we were able to get the classes completed. We also discussed the proper use of the data book.

Then we got down to business of shooting steel from 300 yards out to 817 yards. Sean had the targets randomly placed in an open field and the group had to obtain distances for the targets based on known size of targets although some were very challenging due to the cant of the target. Sean explained again how to determine distance with the optics in which we had MIL/MIL, MOA/MOA and also MOA/MIL scopes so that was quite the challenge.

The course was the field right of the barn and up the hill. The furthest target was 820 yards and you can see some of the larger targets in the field that were white. He had some pretty small targets out in the field that were quite a challenge and definitely made the students have to concentrate in order to hit them. Sean spent time with each of the students to ensure they were absorbing the information. I got a good chance to wring out my Underground Skunkworks Perseus with Thunderbeast Suppressor. They both worked very well.

Sean instructing on the use of Precision Rifle Solutions Tripods and shooting from his weak side...This was a first for me seeing a PRS Tripod and I think I will have to buy one.

Re: Vapor Trail Training Class - March 30-April 1st 12

I got to see lots of rifle's in the class which is always cool. I also got to look through my first Schmidt and Bender Optic...
    Vaportrailcourse093.jpg

it was sitting on a GAP-10 - I have to say - awesome optic...

I did not get to stay for the Sunday class but I heard from friends that stayed that they had an awesome time shooting and the weather was perfect.

I thoroughly enjoyed the class. Sean Little is a knowledgeable shooter and likes to impart that to students. If you get an opportunity don't hesitate to get involved for a course or an opportunity to go to Saxton, PA to shoot a competition. The facilities are very nice and the food was excellent.

I am still trying to figure out what a "Jack-Wagon" is but I am sure Sean can explain it...

I was trying to capture the smoke coming out of the suppressor on a friends rifle - I think I caught some of it

My Underground Skunworks Perseus rifle that I took to the Course with USO SN3 3.2 x 17... I now have 300 rounds down the tube and I am more and more impressed with its accuracy and handiness as a tactical rifle. Mike Bush makes a fine rifle and I have a Recon in the build process right now...can't wait to see it and work with it.

Re: Vapor Trail Training Class - March 30-April 1st 12

I too was in this class and found it nothing but first rate. We had a great time and learned a lot about fundamentals. I second all that JSTARZ said. Great location, great host who cooked great food, and great instructor. The weather was good to us as well with it only raining at night.
The opportunity to see different equipment at a class is a nice bonus. I got to see my first USO Optic and a Skunkworks rifle and they are both very nice and a great set up. I also got to shoot a rifle suppressed, thats going to cost me money no doubt.

If anybody is on the fence about a class with Sean, get off and sign up, you will not be sorry.

Now QUIT WIGGLIN' YA JACK-WAGON! LOL

    off the rest:

You have got to love those Schmidt and Bender scopes - super clear as T2CH was spotting for me with his scope from 500 yards and correcting me to the target.

    Re: Vapor Trail Class - March 30-April 1st 2012

    Hey guys
Sorry but been busy couple of days here, thanks for the great review!! You guys are an easy bunch to teach, even if there were some Army dogs amongst the group!! I never refered to you guys as "jack waggons" I think we were talking about some other topic and you were amused by reference.

I would never call someone a jack waggon? I have far better names to call people!! LOL

I can't say enough about how well you guys did in the course, it was a pleasure teaching and coaching you guys. We did have pretty great weather, and got a little wind in there too so you guys got some exposure to wind calling and your adjustments.

It was also my first time to get to play with George's creation of the GAP10 rifle, what a hunk!!! I was talking to JSTARZ today about how that thing wouldn't shoot for shit, and how I had to use a ballpeen hammer to tune it in so it would at least hit paper. That was with me shooting it, Keith (LOL) was having a hell of a time trying not to miss at that 800yd target. He just kept hitting it and hitting it and hitting it, got really boring after awhile.

Also, he was shooting that garbage ammo M118 clone from Southwest Ammunition, stuff would only shoot like 1/2 or 3/8 MOA all day long. I told him if he really wanted a challenge that I could find some surplus Argentinian M80 ball stuff that he could put through that GAP 10, that way he would probably only hit about 80% of the time at 800yds.

Anyways, he was kind of at a handicap with that milk bottle S&B to look through, I would have taken Brian or Docs SWFA super chickens any old day over that.

I'm just kidding!!! All the equipment was excellent, and you guys proved as a class that gear and equipment is real nice but the shooter can make the difference between a hit or a miss. You guys rocked the weekend and I appreciate you coming out to my little course, if you guys need anything just shoot me an email.

    Re: Vapor Trail Class - March 30-April 1st 2012

One more vote for an awesome week end!! Sean and Dave were great hosts and just super guys to be around. I've been around shooters and instructors for over 35 years and they have ranged from the most qualified and arrogant to barely competent and arrogant. Sean can only be described as expertly qualified and very humble with his knowledge and real life experiences. As T2CH said STOP WIGGLING get off the fence and take one of the Vapor Trail courses!! Brian the newest shooter of the group had a blast and after talking to him and his future wife(my daughter) I can say he agrees that the whole week end was awesome

    Re: Vapor Trail Class - March 30-April 1st 2012

    Hey,
The term 'Jack Wagons' is quite mild of a term used by Sean. I've heard much more colorful names in the classes I've taken so be thankfull.
Sean is the sorriest piece of a worthless excuse for a Marine and instructor I've had dealings with. He has girl arms and smells like an elephant's butt.
Seriously, Sean has made a great difference in my life and I feel honored to have been a student of his. His patience and skill level has attributed to my success in the field.
I'm going back for a 3rd time if he'll put up with me.
    Semper Fi,
    See you soon///Dave

    Re: Vapor Trail Class - March 30-April 1st 2012

I think Sean has a talent for delivering honest direct feedback without sounding a bit arrogant. He wants you to shoot good! You won't get an atta boy from him until you deserve it but he'll also help you smile as you fix your mistakes.

    Re: Vapor Trail Class - March 30-April 1st 2012

Thanks for doing this write-up. I'm on my way to his "Team Concepts" class next weekend and am really looking forward to it. Sean told us you guys shot thru nearly 300rds of precision ammo each, which is a ton of shooting - congrats!

</div></div> you will have a great time. Sean is a great instructor and makes it fun to learn. I would love to got to the Team Concepts course and I may do that when I get a good partner to go with. I didn't get to go to Sunday's portion and I think I shot 225 rounds of reloaded 178 AMAX with Lapua brass between Friday and Saturday. We shot a lot and that was what made it so fun hitting steel out from 300-825 yards.
