Rifle Scopes Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

I'm in the same boat.

I was hesitant because of the wire reticle and I've actually had my eye on a SWFA 3-9 for quite sometime.

I put it off, then it ended up on BO till June/July. Then I put it off more and Aug is way off.

I have a feeling a few of these might pop up on the EE soon. You'll be paying a bit of a premium I'm sure... but wont have to wait.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Say, does anybody know if you can order a custom turret from vortex for the Viper HS 5-15x44? And is there a product manual download available? Couldn't find either on their web site? Thanks in advance.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

That's kind of hard to answer. I would say yes you can get a turret but it would have to be one for a PST since this model shares the same turrets as the PST. There won't be a manual on the website since it is a midway exclusive but you could probably email them and they would send you a digital copy maybe.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Some shitty iPhone pics of my MWS with the Vortex mounted up. I'm more than impressed with this scope to say the least. I'll admit, I kinda had to settle for this scope cause I blew most of my Nightforce scope budget on a mess of .308 ammo I stumbled upon. Oh well, I'm happy with my purchase and the Nightforce can wait.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

I spent a good amount of time behind this scope the last few weeks and I am more impressed now than before. I was doing some loading tests between a hunting rifle with a nikon buckmaster and the viper. I was blown away thinking something was wrong with the buckmaster as the viper was that much clearer. I know its not a great test or even comparable scope but the glass quality is great. Week to week it is still holding zero fine 100+ round fired over the last three weeks. Haven't gone to twisting on the knobs much but will once I get my load dialed in.

If you are looking for a non-$1000 scope I just don't see a better option out there.

Reticle is calibrated at 15x. Glass is nice.

I had the 3-9x42ffp ss right before the viper. I can say that whether it is just the extra zoom features, the 30mm tube or slightly larger objective, the scope is brighter and crisper and targets are super clear at 100 yards. Unless it is going on a 5.56 the viper offers a bunch. Compared to a buddies brand new 10x42sf ss. Once again due to the additional zoom, the scope is much brighter and all around usable as the 5x allows for reasonable hunting use as well.

Here's a picture of mine mounted.

What are the limitations of the Viper on a 5.56?

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

To be completely honest, I've not had the chance to shoot this rifle with the Battlecomp on. Hopefully I'll make it to the range this week. I took the BABC off of my 6.8 SPC barrel and it did a very good job at controlling muzzle rise. I have no reason to believe it wouldn't do the same on the MWS. As for the Vortex scope, I don't think it can be beat for the money. However, only time will tell and with the lifetime warranty you can't go wrong IMHO.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

I am definately ordering some more of these as soon as they get the back orders caught up!!

I am guessing the Razor 5-20 turrets have got to be as nice as these, anyone have mileage with each model?

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

I will have both as soon as the 5-15 gets here sometime this year I hope lol. The turrets on the razor are amazing, since you can unlock them from the the "clicks" you can set your scope EXACTLY where it needs to be. Same goes with the zero stop, you can set it to stop dead on zero or run however many clicks past zero you want. With that said, Im sure the turrets on this scope will do just great.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

I just backordered one of these too. It's way too good of a deal to pass up, and is exactly what I've been looking for for my LR308 build nearing completion. The only tough part is that I have to buy a scope to use in the meantime since its showing out of stock til 8/9! Any suggestions for a ~$300 scope that would get me by? It'll probably find its permanent home on my 6.8 after the Viper comes in.

Hey! Maybe people will get sick of waiting and cancel their orders, and I'll get mine sooner...then again, not too many "Impatient Snipers" out there HAHA

You may check into the Super Sniper line of scopes. I don't think I've ever read a bad review on any of them! And they hold their value very well!

But this Vortex scope is definantly worth the wait, I love mine! Great scope period!

Does anyone know for sure which Butler Creek Flip-Up scope covers to order for the HS 5-15x44? Scope Covers on sale now @ MidwayUSA

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Can I get a little advice here? I'm looking for a good big game hunting scope for my 7 Mag. The scope looks great, but most of my shots will be within 400 yards. I am looking to extend my shot out to 700 but only if I can take an ethical shot. Is this a good scope for that? I've never run a piece of glass with turrets and while I like the challenge of learning, is this scope going to perform well and without fuss between 100-400 yards? My hope here is to use the mil dot reticle out to about 300-400 yards and the turrets after that. I do not want to hae to adjust my scope for shots within 300.

Please advise away,
s

Yipee for my first post!

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

If anyone who owns this scope can post more thoughts on it after spending some time with it please do. Also, if you have other scopes in your stable that you can compare the glass to I am curious to know how it fairs.

Thank you

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

I decided to go out and do a very quick side-by-side comparison between my Bushnell Elite 4200 Tactical 6-24x50 FFP and my Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44. I got the Viper on sale from Midway for $400 early last month and I got the Elite 4200 Tactical used on the Hide for about $630.

The Savages each scope resides on; 12FV .223 for the Vortex (closest) and 10FP .260 for the Bushnell.

IMG_0494.jpg

Now for crappy through-the-scope pictures!

Here is the Viper 5-15 on 6x power (for comparison with the Bushnell). Note one picture is "brighter" than the other; that's due to my Rebel XT's settings, not a result of the scope itself.

IMG_0498.jpg

IMG_0499.jpg

IMG_0501.jpg

Now for the Bushnell 4200 6-24x50 @ 6x power:

IMG_0507.jpg

IMG_0508.jpg

As others have mentioned, the Viper HS eyebox is HUGE...especially compared to the Bushnell 4200. Even at 6x power getting these through-the-scope pictures to be halfway decent were difficult enough as it was, but the Bushnell was very finicky and I had a half-dozen pictures that looked good when I pressed the shutter button but the camera shifted a teensy bit causing half the view to be obstructed.

With both scopes set at 15x, the eyebox issue was even worse.

Looking through both scopes at 15x power at the same playhouse this morning, the Bushnell seemed ever-so-slightly clearer and brighter than the Vortex. Might be the slightly larger objective of the Bushnell, I'm not sure. Roll both scopes down to about 12x, and I couldn't discern any difference whatsoever.

Of course, upthread I said I thought the Vortex was very similar if not a touch better than the Bushnell after shooting both rifles...so WTF do I know? To my very much non-discerning eye, the optical quality is very, very similar.

While I don't have any complaints about the Bushnell's turrets, I prefer the feel of the Vortex turrets (zero stop is nice too, but I've yet to use it).

The Vortex absolutely kicks the Bushnell's ass when it comes to elevation. The Vortex is on a 20MOA Weaver base and I've got 16.0mil up from a 100m zero with 75gr HPBT handloads, while the Bushnell is on a 25MOA EGW base and has 8.0mil up from a 100m zero with 140gr A-Max handloads, which gets me to about 1000yd and beyond if I use 130gr VLDs.

Unless one needs greater than 15x magnification, illumination or FFP I find this Vortex scope to be a fantastic value.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Maybe it has something to do with how you have the scopes focused, but the bushnell seems to resolve objects better in the pics. Look at the leaves on the trees. The leaves through the Vortex scope look like a green mass with outside shapes that are discernable. Look at the same leaves through the bushnell and you can see each individual leaf with more detail.

Just my observation though. Either way I don't doubt the Vortex is a great scope.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

With respect to the question of Butler Creek caps...

I took mine into a store to try different size caps to get the right ones. 14 is definitely right for the eye piece.

For the objective, the sales guy had me walking out with the 33, but I decided to try the 31 before leaving and I'm glad I did. I think the 31 is a better fit for the objective. YMMV.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Thanks for the pictures. I should be able to go to the range this weekend to compare Viper HS vs Weaver Tactical.

How do you like your Savage 10FP in 260REM? Is it a factory gun or custom build?

The rifle is "custom"...Criterion barrel and Manners T2 stock. Had it in an A2 Medalist until right around Christmas last year. Like it A LOT...

As for the scope pictures, I went and looked at the side focus on each scope and sure enough, the Vortex was turned down to something like 25yd, and the Bushnell was set around 150yd.

That probably explains the difference in clarity in the pictures.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Come on Midway, surprise the hell outta me !!!!! Jumped on board too late. Arrival date of August. August! Holy Crap ! New orders are now into September. This is too cruel. Having to hold off on working up new load due to stock and scope on backorder. On top of all that, the weather is breaking LMAO. Can't win.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Thanks for the reply. I am considering doing a Savage 260 build, mainly because I could change the barrel later by myself.

I did went to the range Sunday, but had very limited time after sight in 4 guns and some load development. I did notice one things: when I level the scopes w.r.t. a thin plumb line at 100yd, it was easier to see the line through the Weaver 3-15X tactical than the Vortex Viper HS 5-15X. Both are at 15X.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

I have one on back order too. When I ordered the expected date in stock was 6/30. I talked to cs at midway today and they said ALL orders wont be in til September. Just thought some of y'all might want to know.

So even if my BO expected ship date says June 30, they dont expect to get any more and be able to ship them out until September? That may change my plans....have already been getting too itchy to wait until end of June. I will not wait until Sept. to put glass on my new rifle for sure. I'm ready to start shooting it now....if this is truly the case, then I will be looking at other options for sure despite how good a deal this scope is.

*EDIT* I called midway - they confirmed - Viper has pushed back the ship date on all current orders not filled. Will be "end of the summer" per the CS rep at Midway. So, time to decide on alternate glass for my new rifle. Now, I'll have to return the rings and BC caps and buy new ones since I ordered them for this scope when I ordered it, dammit.

We havent changed anything, so if it said June 30th when you ordered, as far as I know that should still be a fair "estimate". I think what is happening is that they are getting so many orders for these scopes that they have to continuously bump the date back for new purchasers and the CS rep that you talked may not be aware of that.

Hopefully nothing happens in the meantime and I have to eat my words, but like I said we have not changed any delivery dates. So hopefully you guys will get your scopes close to the date that it said when you ordered.

Best Regards,
Scott

Well that is at least reassuring to hear. Although unlike a few that hope to have a gun to put the scope when they do get it, I have a gun now that I want to shoot and was hoping to have it dialed in for a match on 5/19. Having seen a few that ordered around the same time I did and already received the scope I thought was a good possibility. I might have something I will use it on later, just not the stick I originally intended it for, and will likely keep it on order.

Thanks for the update!

Rumor Control Central has just been "Closed" lmao. Thanks Scott for keeping us informed, it's appreciated. Next

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

1J04,

That wasn't a rumor. I called Midway customer service and spoke with one of their representatives. I passed along the information he gave to me. If he was misinformed or didn't know about Vortex's delivery timelines that is a possibility.

It was inaccurate information given to me by an unknowing rep, but not a "RUMOR".

FYI
