If anyone wants to get onto the list for the April match, email Kevin as he is handling the signup list this month. There are still about 10 slots left.
The May match will have a reduced attendance as we will also be running an extended orientation/familiarization for people who want to work on the props without having to deal with being in a match. The two groups will be on different ranges, and will swap about half way through the day.

Kevin's work took him out of the area this week, and he may not return in time for the match. So, I may have to modify slightly the course of fire for Saturday's match as Kevin has about half of the steel. The course will remain predominantly the same, just with a few minor modifications.
Modifications will include things like 2 shots at the same target, rather than one shot at each of 2 targets at a given distance, larger targets at some distances, and other minor variances. The primary focus of the exercise of the stage will remain the same.

I'm back! I'll be at the match on Saturday. I might be too tired to shoot but I'll be there.
My second kid just decided to come a couple of weeks early, so I am going to have to bow out of this one. Bummed about missing it again, but c'est la vie.
I just want to thank everyone for the hospitality today at the match, i haven't had that much fun behind a rifle in a long time. And the folks that set it all up and put it on, WOW what a great course of fire I definitely have my work cut out for me. and a shout out to however built the simulated roof top, you are an evil man.

I'm gonna miss next month's match (!!) because it's the weekend of the Master Gardener's annual plant sale, and the best place to acquire tomato plants suited to PNW weather. See you guys in June!

Here are the results from yesterdays match. We had to drop the scores for the hostage flapper stage due to technical difficulties with the target. I worked on it today and I think that I have it set up to work now, just need to get out and test it.

Worked on putting pictures together today and will hopefully have them posted up sometime tomorrow. Most are of group 1 but did manage to get some other people in there too, tough to take pictures when we're spread out.

Yep, I built the rooftop prop out of a couple of pallets I scrounged at a building supply place. The only costs I had for it were hinges, I bolts, and the strap to hold the angle. I had no idea what a bitch of a prop it would be when I built it. I thought it would work out fine, but it is small, so any shooting position is really cramped and awkward. I put the little step things onto it because I thought they might make it a bit easier, but now i realize the prop would be useless as a roof top without them.
On the positive side though, if people can learn to shoot of that accursed roof top prop I built, almost any other roof top you come up against will seem positively luxurious, comfortable, and a piece of cake to shoot from. So I guess there is some thing positive about that. (I hate the damned thing too!)
Hey all, the match on Saturday was great. Thanks for doing this every month so people like us have a welcoming place to shoot some practical rifle. My Dad and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!

I will be managing the signup list for the May 03 familiarization event, and for the match. I will post the list on this site after I get a few people signed up.
As we will be running a match on one range, and the familiarization on the other range, we are limiting attendance at each event to 15 people. I am so looking forward to this match on 5/3/14. It will be worth the drive from Reno. I hope to get some practice for the upcoming Sniper's Hide Cup also. See you guys then!!

Shooter begins standing at base of the rooftop with up to 5 rounds loaded into rifle, chamber empty. May chamber a round only AFTER acquiring their shooting position. After start signal, mount rooftop so no part of the shooter is touching the ground. Engage T3, T4, T5, T6, T7, T8. Shooter may use extra rounds whenever they advise the RO they will re-engage a target. Each hit = 1 point
(We will attempt to make the angle of the roof top less steep than the last time we used it so we can have a different problem to solve at this match)
7. PRONE: 8 rounds/120 seconds (8 points possible)

The 03 May 2014 practical rifle match at UNSC is now full. There are spots left for the extended orientation though. This is a chance to just shoot steel and practice, work with the props, and to help familiarize new shooters with our shooting. Experienced shooters would be VERY helpful as they can demonstrate various techniques that they have found successful to the newer shooters.
Although people attending the orientation will be shooting the same steel, distances, and using the same props as the match, they won't have scores recorded for the match, or be shooting stages. It is a chance to get in some good practice for anyone interested.
As this match has so few spots available, if anyone with a reservation finds that they can't attend, please notify me as soon as possible so someone else can have that spot.

1. Make sure your ammo doesn't have any bullets that attract a magnet, as we check with a magnet, and if the ammo attracts the magnet, you can't use it. The ferrous metal in the bullets pock marks the steel up and damages it terribly.
2. Eye and ear protection is required by the club. Elbow and knee protection helps out tremendously as I always seem to find that one sharp rock on every range.
3. No magnum rifles allowed. Max power level is cartridges similar to the 30-06 and 8mm Mauser.
4. You will need a chamber flag. The club sells them for $1 each if you don't have one. I often make up spares out of plastic coat hangers that I heat with a hair dryer, then bend it to a 90 degree angle, and cut to length..that works fine.
5. Bring stuff to eat/drink if you wish. Due to the problems lead ingestion causes, be sure to wash your hands and/or face before eating or drinking anything though.
6. Cost of the session is $10 for club members of UNSC, and $15 for non-members. The normal match fee is $20.
7. This session will qualify as the club's requirement that anyone wanting to participate in practical rifle complete a safety briefing/orientation session.
8. I suggest bringing 60-80 rounds of ammo. More or less ammo is fine, but the more you bring, the more steel you can shoot.

Hello, AtOne sent me this link as i live in Graham and am just getting into shooting at distance. Im still finishing up my build on a Savage model 10 FCP-SR and just waiting on glass for it and have not yet put any rounds on paper with it. He said that this could possibly be a good place for me to start and to meet a few people to learn the ropes a bit as im still wet behind the ears and trying to learn mils, holdovers, ranging, adjustments, etc on my own. As it can be a bit brain scrambling sometimes and im probably making it harder than it really is. He said ya'll are meeting this coming Saturday at Upper Nisqually and i was curious if there was a time i could come by and check things out and meet a few of you and see how ya'll do things.
0830 would prob be a good time to learn to rules/safety part. After that just observe and ask anyone if you have questions... its a good group.
Orientation/familiarization starts at 08:30 am, match starts at 10:00 AM. You would be welcome to come and watch either one and it won't cost anything. That would give you a chance to meet people, see what we do, how we do it, and check out UNSC if you haven't already been there.

If you come, just bring your gear. In my experience with matches, especially ones as friendly to new shooters as this match will be this weekend, people who come watch always say "man, I wish I brought my gear so I could shoot."
Id love to, except im still waiting on my glass to show up so i can get this unit up and running. the anticipation is killing me like a kid waiting for Christmas morning.
Ah. In that case I suppose you don't have much of a choice. The hardest part about getting into matches is taking the first step of actually coming to a match, so even without the rifle I suppose you can still get that out of the way, meet some people, see how the match works, learn a little, and then be ready to jump right in as soon as your scope comes.

Any chance I could get into the match this Saturday? I thought I would be traveling but my trip got re-scheduled, so I can actually make it up there. I just shot the FSC match in Ellensburg last Saturday, and man do I have a long way to go in this sport.

Now if only you'd said Saturday or Sunday - I'll be flying into Portland from LA on Friday morning, so definitely can't do that.

We have to be off the 100 yard range by 2:00 PM, and off the 550 yard range by 4:00 PM. Both the match shooters, and the people in the familiarization program will be using the same props and steel, so my guess is that we will finish up between 2-4 PM, most likely closer to 3:00 PM.
Because every match has a different course of fire, we really aren't able to give a more precise estimate on when we will be finished. Factors like the number of people shooting, how long each course of fire takes to complete, how well the competitors cooperate by getting onto and off the range without dawdling around effect the time we finish up. Sometimes, competitors are fabulous and things run like clockwork...other times, targets go down, deer come onto the range, or shooters seem to visit more than move quickly through the stages. Sorry I can't give a more precise time estimate, but at least you know why I can't give that estimate now.
If you are just shooting in the familiarization and need to be somewhere, you can probably leave anywhere after noon. That will give you plenty of time to complete the mandatory portion of the program that all first time shooters have to go through. After that, the remainder of the program is for the shooters to practice on the props and steel. The safety portion is mandatory, practicing is optional.
You can practice as much as your schedule or ammunition permits. I hope to practice until I run out of ammo, (and I will bring a bunch.)
