What Action Should I Get?? 338 Build

Wow.. I was ready to get a surgeon action on order for my 338 lapua build. I just called up there about 20 minutes ago and they are so backlogged they aren't taking orders anymore... I'm dead set on the oversized integrated recoil lug, and integrated built in 30 MOA pic rail.

I've looked around some at other actions that I know of and no one makes an action I can build the 338 out of like this... I have to have the built in recoil lug, I don't want a pinned lug for this big build. And for the shear force recoil factor I'm dying to have the pic. rail built into the action where there is no pins and screws holding it on... I'm wanting solid solid solid... Anyone know of other actions I should look into??? I was trying to order today!

Well I got off the phone with Defiance Machine. They are building me another deviant action but in a long action this time to fit the 338. It's not listed on their website that they can do it, but they can.

Why the integrate lug, and rail? I was under the impression that these were considered wearable items, especially on a weapon of that caliber. If they are integrated and you rebarrel you would have to replace the action to get a new recoil lug; same goes for the base.

That being said have you taken a look at Pierce, or Stiller?

Just a thought. Cheaper than a custom build and has an integral rail with a metal-on-metal recoil lug system, will shoot as well as many customs as well.

BAT or Stiller. Personally, I dont care for the finish and machining of the Defiance actions.

Surgeon makes a great action but overpriced. One problem I see with Surgeon is the rail. Not enough cant built in. I use 60moa bases on all my long range guns. They bolts are cast. I personally recommend Stiller. If you mount the base PROPERLY, the screws will not comes loose and you mention the integrated lug, shear force. How would you ever shear the lug when it`s sandwiched between the barrel and action?

How bout this Ti action from X-treme Shooting? Im sure it would come with a oversized bolt know like my X-treme action did.

Badger actions have 2 integrated recoil lugs. The scope rail is pinned and screwed down. You also have the option of a 40 moa rail if 20 moa is not enough. The latest generation are a little lighter overall with a lighter bolt lift. I have both a Surgeon and badger m2008, also a trg 42 in 338 Lapua. Love all 3, but I lean towards the actions with a 60 degree bolt lift.

I'm sure whatever you decide, you will have a very fine rifle.

To set the record straight our bolts are not cast. They are machined from 4140 forgings.

Another vote for the Badger. I love my Badger M2008 genII .338. I wanted the heaviest action that I could find to reduce a little recoil and make sure it locks up like a safe. The badger fit that bill perfectly.

I am very happy with my McMillan action. Ironic I am running it in a AICS.
