What do you think of this Savage?

This isn't as tacticool or probably as good as a 5R, but while I was at Cabelas earlier I looked at an interesting rifle.
It's a Savage 10FP in a Choate stock. It has a DBM and there is a slot on the bottom of the forearm for mounting a bipod or other accessory. It has their accutrigger of course and a 26" barrel.
I know Savage rifles are good but is there any reason to avoid them. The DBM that comes with the rifle holds 4 rounds but the salesman said someone makes a larger mag. If i get this I would probably get a 10x SS scope for it.
Cabelas price is $699.00. I figure not having to change out the stock and having a DBM saves a lot. I have no idea yet which Choate stock it is. I will look it up later when I can get on mu computer. Searching from my I-Phone is slow.
What do ya'll think of this for a beginner longrange target rifle?

I don't have any experience with that stock but if it's reasonably stiff I would say that rifle would be hard to beat for a 'beginner longrange target rifle'.
Put the SS 10x HD on it and you're dancin' on a budget.
In my experience Savages are not the most robust action but the accuracy of them can be pretty dang satisfying.
Sharp Shooter Supply makes a higher capacity mag that may fit on this.
A novice rifleman could learn a lot before he would outgrow this rifle.

If price is an issue and you can swing that. And if thats what will get you into long range shooting then GET IT!! Those rifles shoot great. Sure you can get better feeling rifle/action. But that one will be plenty accurate. Buy as good of a scope as you can afford. I would not get the fixed 10 as you were thinking of but thats just me. A NF 5.5x22 NPR1 with a 20MOA base would be my route. Whatever you get PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!!! Then you will shoot good with any combo. Good luck.

The Choate stocks are GTG! A little fuggly, but stiff as a 2x4, and accurate. The tactical choate is by far the best looking one going, but they all have aluminum v-block bedding, and built like tanks

That rifle with the SS 10x will be a fine combination to start with. You will get plenty of use and learn a lot. Buy it.

Not to knock Savage because I am a fan, but, I had a primer blow one Sunday and because of the small extractor parts etc. the fugly that spewed from it put me out of action for a while.
The good news is this was just practice.
If it weren't, I would probably be dead right now.

From the replys I can't figure out if I should jump at this rifle or wait until I find a 5R or 700P.
What caused the Savage to vent gasses from a blown primer into your face? Is it the floating bolt head?
None of my shooting will be in any type of conflict- unless zombies are real. My shooting will be strictly range work with maybe an occaisional match.

blah blah blah, you will like the savage. use "savage" and search the site, very few dissappointed savage owners. and... there is a smoking 10fcp-hs with a bunch of gear. the 10fcp-hs is 900-950 alone. in the trade section, there is one with bipod and a nice 4200 elite scope for just the price of a rifle. check it out

Please don't misunderstand me.
No gases got near my face.
The problem I experienced with my Savage was strictly mechanical and may have just as easily have happened with a Remington.
In reading my last post I can see how I didn't make myself clear. NO physical damage to myself, only had bolt malfunction from debris from the blown primer.
IN MY EXPERIENCE the Savage action is not the most robust.
I don't think anyone would argue that there are more robust actions available than either the Savage or Remington.
Again, I am strictly referring to my experience and my opinion.
I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything.
To each his own.

I called my local Dick's. They have a Savage model 10 FCP XP in stock for $699.00. Is this the rifle with the HS stock? I couldn't get him to tell for sure so I may have to go by there.
The Savage model 10 FP at Cabelas has the Choate stock for the same price.

Both rifles have a DBM and oversize bolt knob.

If they are the same rifle in different stocks would the rifle in the HS stock be the one to go with?

I love my savage. i got the 10pc in 308 last fall. it's my first long range shooter. well lr for me anyway. i got to believe it shoots better than i since i was shooting clovers at 150yds with factory ammo at deer camp. i can't wait to shoot this 500yrds this spring and see what it'll do? for now i just admire it, dryfire practice and read a lot here on the hide. savage has my vote but then again i'm a beginner, lol

Yes, Dick's is selling it at that price because it is not the "package deal", it is only the rifle, the package deal includes a hard case, a Luepold tactical scope and I believe a Harris bipod.

there is a ... did i say this already? there is a HS stocked rifle for sale now with a really nice scope and bipod basically free. you will know the HS stock when the rifle get to the $900 range and it was listed as the 10FCP-HS. what you have to decide what you want to do with the rifle. if you want a nice stock and cant find a factory choice that you like, get the 10fp. its basic and has no mag, but you can add CDI bottom metal and have a nice setup with the stock of your choice. paying extra for savages DBM and then going CDI woud be a waste of the money you paid extra for a factory DBM model. if you are ok with factory DBM abd SSS 9 round mags, grab the choate tactical, or spend more and get a real A5 or HS stock. you will find a few HS stocks in the lineup, they are not all like the one i have on the 10FCP-HS. really, if you want that $699 rifle look at the used one here. for the $200 difference, you are getting a 4200 elite scope, bipod and a few other things i believe, (rings and base) and thats a bargain. i know its more, but its ready to shoot as well. where can you get a scope, rings, base and bipod for the $200 difference?

i know its hard without holding them to decide, but sometimes you have to make a leaf of faith. and then make modifications to fit you. but i dont think you will be disappointed with the choate of the HS or McM. its really the same basic action in different stocks.

Axeman I looked at that rifle as soon as youfirst mentioned it. I sent a trade offer. If he isn't interested i will wait and see if it's still there when I have enough cash. I am close. I agree that rifle would be the best choice but I am about $100.00 short of his asking price right now.

It is exactly what i was looking for for two weeks, used first. I was trying to avoid buying new so I didn't have to work out any kinks (I am time limited for a shoot). I couldn't find a Savage LE used so I ordered the FCP-K last week finally. I'd have been all over that.

Make him an offer. All he can do is foam at the mouth and talk about your mother if he is offended. He might let it go for less though and you;d get a helluva deal. Axe is good peeps (even if he waited a week too late to sell it

)

I agree with the "NOT!!!" statement depending on which Savage Racialist is talking about, but there have been posts here with shot groups that showed what Savages are "capable of" in the hands of good shooters when compared to 5R shot groups. Out of the box they can go head to head with a 5R with ammo each likes.

just to be clear, its not my rifle. its the same model that i have. so i know based on what i paid for my rifle only, thats a smoking deal. plus we need more savage owners

Not the same rifle. I went in to look at one because the guy told me over the phone it was an accustock model, it wasn't.
The box listed as a 10FCPXP but it is a special build for Dick's - std synthetic stock, 22" fluted barrel, accutrigger. The one I saw had a crappy Tasco scope.

I bought a 10 FCP-K instead.

I almost bought Dicks FCP XP when I couldn't find an FCP-McM or FCP-K anywhere. It's just the standard FP (non Accustock) but with detachable mag and a Tasco World Class scope. Would've been ok, I'm sure, since I don't have a Cabelas to get the Choate version. But I really wanted either a McMillan or the Accustock.

Is this deal that good because of the scope and the HS stock- the whole package, or what? Is the basic rifle the same as the cabela's in the Choate stock?

I sent him an IM and posted in his thread. I really do want to see pics before I commit. I would have to hit a pawn shop unless he wants to wait a couple of weeks. Right now $850.00 is all I gots. I used to think that was pretty good pocket change, but now, here, I don't know. I looked, very briefly, at something else I have wanted for 20 years or so, but man, M1As are more expensive than these rifles are.

Fair enough, Devil's advocate time though.
(These observations are based on my educated guesses, if I'm incorrect please let me know.)

If I am correct you had a case failure that blew the extractor tooth and detent out, yes?

1- A case can fail, no matter what action it is sitting in.

2- Actions, Rem 700/Sav 10, are designed(if I'm not mistaken) to vent gases in case of such an event, protecting the shooter.

3- Anything designed and built by human hand can break under certain circumstances.

So, if the same event had happened in a Rem 700 action and the extractor had been damaged, you would have had the same "poorly designed club" the Sav 10 became. Correct?

Based on my limited experience with the Sav 10 and even less experience with my friend's Rem 700, this is where my opinion differs.

The 700 in this situation, could be inspected in the field, say at a match, and found to have a damaged extractor. Then what, your down, send it to a smith and wait. Correct?

With the Savage, inspect, identify missing extractor parts, then what. If it were me, I'm going to clean my bolt face well, take out my Swiss Army knife/Leatherman, open my stock pack, pull out my spare extractor parts(spring, detent and extractor were $20 or less if I recall) and in 5 minutes I'm back in the game, if everything seems right.

It's all about perspective. You say less robust, I say a design that accepts the possibility of case failure and gives me the ability for end user, in the field repair, with minimal tools and time.

In the end, as you said, "To each his own." This is just how I see the other side of the same coin.

Glad you weren't hurt, I hope you were wearing eye protection.

i paid $900 for JUST the rifle. figure the scope and the reat of the stuff are freebies. so its scope, base, rings and bipod wasnt it? thats alot of free stuff

The extractor tooth was not blown off, just frozen.
I just finished shooting 3 shots off-hand and only found 2 cases to pick up. I just thought I lost one.
Well I couldn't chamber a round on my next station and guess what? I found my 3rd case! Still in the chamber.

Cleaning rod to knock it out, pull and inspect the bolt, MUCH cleaning off the funk, finally got it cleaned up enough to function roughly. Too late as I had by then missed a few stations of a tacticle shoot that I had a great start on.

Again, only practice.

And again, I don NOT think the Savage is poorly designed.
I own and favor a couple of them. (actually I kind of favor pretty much all my rifles.) I am a Savage fan. I see the floating bolt head and "ugly" (not if form follows function) barrel nut as advantages that other actions do not have.

I do however think there are more robust actions available. I would be a fool not to.

And yes, I was able to get the bolt back in service in the field. I don't think spare parts would have helped that much as the hole the spring fit into was pretty hard to get clean in the field. The ball was hard to get clean too so that could have been replaced. It still required a bit of work when I got it home.

I bought the 10fcp-xp from Dick's. It has a cheap plastic stock and comes with a tasco scope(junk). However, the barrel is a 20" heavy fluted barrel compared to a standard heavy 24" barrel on the Cabela's rifle(which I don't see on their site anymore).
If the 20" heavy fluted barrel is something you would prefer. I just so happen to have one, mounted to the choate tactical stock that I am selling with 100 rounds of chamber-fired brass(only 200 rounds through the gun) for $600+shipping+ffl.

I think an AI action or an action with a claw extractor would have been in better shape.

If I were going to replace my Savage to remedy the problem I had with my blown primer causing a malfunction of the extractor, I would not be thinking Remington.

I have not done extensive testing on this matter however.
