To end or change the electoral college will be the end of the United States. It will be "you" against "us". The population centers will govern themselves as they see fit and the rural areas will do the same.
It's not so easy to "fix" as your making it out to be. You are talking about dividing this country on a level that has never been seen with many more people involved than ever before.
As divided as we are, the last thing we need now is to drive the wedge so deep it's impossible to recover. We were founded on the principle that we did not want to be ruled by England. Why would people in rural areas ever consider allowing the most populous states, CA, NY, etc govern us? You could give a shit about us other than we continue to provide your energy and food, etc. You see yourselves as somehow above us on every level and that we should just fall in line with whatever changes you want to make for us?

It already is a you vs us. It's already divided. It's like having a gym class vote on what activity to do that day, but the loser complains enough that the teacher gives in. As it stands now, the electoral votes do not represent the population of America. They were meant to make voting easier due to the fact that in the 1700s we had no easy way to count millions of votes.
The Senate is supposed to be the counter to the House. The president is not.

I'd rather eliminate political parties, completely. That way the candidates would have to focus on setting themselves apart from their opponents, based on qualities, rather than party. It would solve so many problems. No more party elites picking candidates for us.

I like our current system just fine. Tyranny of the majority is just as bad as any third world dictatorship. Especially with the likes of Pelosi, Schumer, Biden et al. at the helm. So those in favor of abolishing the electoral college prefer that 4-5 states dictate to the other 40+ how to live? Fuck that. Actually stalemate is the answer when congress or the senate can not agree on a way forward. That was sheer genius and our founding fathers seem to get no respect for their foresight. Government should grind to a halt when agreement can’t be reached!
As to representation, the system already has that. Representatives are allocated by number of voters. The senate is allocated 2 per state at large. Check and balance.
But is you want a real idea, why don’t we allocate votes by amount of ferderal taxes paid? I pay a lot each year, so why do I not receive a proprtion of votes equal to my proportion of support toward maintaining our government? Make it sigmoidal in shape so both extremes are attenuated?
Throw in term limits with the above, and things might change for the better?
