I just recently bought a Remington UMC 250 round mega pack of 9 mm 115gr mc for plinking. It seemed like a steal, so in my excited state I did not notice the mc until getting the box out. Just curious if there is any real difference between fmj and mc. I looked online but got lots product sites. Also how about performance?

MC means metallic coated and FMJ obviously means Full Metal Jacket. For all intense purposes to the shooter, they are the same, though this with a combination of other materials creates a cheaper quality ammunition. The manufacturing side is where the difference comes in, it is less expensive to MC than FMJ, if you were to look at the bullet as a whole, the entire bullet is coated, as where the FMJ has an uncoated base. For plinking, no difference. Many manufactures use the MC along with cheaper primers and powders to make a value engineered product.

The MC in Remingtons UMC line means Metal Case, not metallic coated http://www.remington.com/products/ammunition/umc/umc-handgun-ammunition.aspx . These aren't plated bullets, they are conventional FMJ design. Remington just uses a different term. This is a photo of a Remington UMC .45 ACP MC bullet that is sectioned down the middle. As you can see, conventional FMC construction with a different name.

Some bean counter at Remington probably calculated how much extra the ink used in printing FMJ vs MC would cost multiplied by millions of boxes...
