Re: What NOT to ask on SH

If this site is, or becomes, the sort of site where somebody with a need for info has to fear catching flack for asking it, then I'm afraid The 'Hide has lost its character and become like every other barfy site where the Internet bungholes do most of their self admiration.

After a decade or so here, I think I've seen a lot of the same questions a pretty fair number of times. So What? For the Newb, it's their first try. How in hell did they manage to deserve some keyboard commando's derision? If I don't have an answer, or I think somebody else will offer genuine help, I'll be still. But Flackin' the Newbs? Naaahhh...

What NOT to ask on SH? Beats me...

Well said! And all the hero worship and fanboys are getting old as well. Seriously, How many people here think you can get banned just because one of the mods is having a bad day?

Good point Greg, not sure if you saw my post above yours, I wanted to make sure I was clear on my intentions.

The goal is no to have a forum full of users that are gun shy to ask a question at the risk of getting publicly flamed, but to promote searching the FAQ or a "frequently asked questions" thread that may/will answer their question(s), if the answer is not found after a search, by all means ask.

I can honestly say I have only jumped on one member in past years for conduct or posts, but never over a question. I am a advocate of learning, thats why I am a member here. New members, ask away, just do a brief search to see if your question was a topic or answered days/weeks earlier.

Re: What NOT to ask on SH

i think this site will fare better if we just keep answering the newbs. however there is a manual written by john plaster that answers everything and should be a sticky here required of all new members and by members i mean...wait what??
anyway if the ultimate sniper dont answerr it for ya and watchin all the movies with dolph lundgren, markymark and billy zane doesnt enlighten you to snipery ninjadom then pm me or send your malfunctioning sks sniper rifles in the mail to doc silky.

Re: What NOT to ask on SH

Well. I can't tell others how to handle the Newbs, and I'd rather not try anyway. I figure as long as a few are still willing to take the Newbs seriously, the rest is immaterial.

Finally, as far as the 'best' stuff goes; I'd far rather hear about what doesn't work for the individual and why they feel that's so. It can help me, and maybe I can help back.

Re: What NOT to ask on SH

I go to a few forums specializing in various things. Ford engines, Jeep XJ's, Boats, Food, Fishing, Fat girls etc.

Is some forums (here too) I am the noob, I read as many threads as I can, I try to keep up. I am there to learn what I need, but I offer advice when I can.

In other forums, I am the crusty veteran with a big post count and years of 1st hand experience. As a former Chef, current commercial fisherman and fishing guide, there are a few things I know that I don't mind sharing. I see a lot of the same questions asked over and over, "Best Pesto Recipe?" "Who makes the best Jig STick?" "Accurate or Shimano" "Pursuit or Grady White?"

"WHats wrong with my Alfredo?"

Depending on who is asking, how they ask, I take the time to answer as best I can.
I was a noob once, will be again; if I ever want to do my taxes and visit an accounting forum, or I may take up Crochet and go to "knittershide.com" I may have to ask, "Who makes the best yarn for the money?" and hopefully those old Grannies won't pwn me too hard before I get the info I need.

Re: What NOT to ask on SH

Simple: don't introduce yourself as a "noob" and ask for advice from the "experienced guys", and then get pissed off and whine when you get an answer other than what you were hoping to hear. Everyone should remember that when they post a new thread asking for advice, they are asking real people to take time out of their day to help them or give them information. Anyone who is willing to help out by posting a (constructive) reply deserves a little respect and appreciation for their time, even if the answer is not the one you were expecting. If more "new guys" realized this, they would find people here alot friendlier and more willing to help in the future. When "talking" to someone online, try to extend the same courtesy you would if you were talking to them in person. Imagine you are at your first comp, and you have just walked up to a group of experienced shooters to ask for advice. Unless you are just an asshole with no people skills, this approach should help everyone.

Re: What NOT to ask on SH

Reticule vs Wreckticule

Why is the .270 not used as a sniper cartridge

Why doesn't somebody make "whatever" out of Titanium

When is my barrel going to be done

Re: What NOT to ask on SH

I am a noob, an old one to be sure, but still a noob {at least as far as post counts go}. I use the search here, so I don't participate in posting as much as I would like to, because I really do enjoy discussing guns, long range shooting, reloading. I would suggest, that in order to stop the same question being asked over and over, which appears to be very annoying to many, why not simply post a disclaimer stating that this forum, while public, is for experts ONLY. Only those with expert knowledge should post or respond, and then have links directing those with less than expert knowledge, to websites that encourage those types to freely participate, at least until they too, have expert knowledge. Problem solved

Re: What NOT to ask on SH

These threads pop up a lot

Whats best a TRG or AI or GAP?

Whats the difference between an AE and an AW?

If I drop my cheap POS remmy 7 action in an aftermarket stock will it turn into the 0.25 moa gun I know it can be?

If I write 'TACTICAL' on a turd will some asshole off this forum buy it?
(made the last 1 up)

Well I'd like for someone that I go talk to at a gun shop to know what a MIL is, and why you would want it instead of MOA. What shop do you work at in Bowling Green? Do you know any Burkhead's out there? As far as the general publics knowledge, and your basic guy behind the gun counter I think they are matched up well. I bet it would get frustrating having to explain the simple shit over and over everyday. That's why I wouldn't really want to be the guy behind the counter.
I love it when I see someone trying to sell a Glock or similar pistol to some guy that is obviously new to shooting and I'll go explain to him why those pistols are pieces of shit in my opinion. It's always good to piss off the guy that acts like he knows it all and I never tire of hearing about how safe Glocks are. I Love asking to see one and then having the guy show me the safety. Thats when I look at the other guy or girl and say "So the trigger is the safety, but the gun is always ready to fire no matter what." Now if your experienced in handling firearms that maybe fine for you, but think about the woman that buys a gun loads it and never shoots it, never unloads it, just leaves it in her purse. I would just love for once to hear a gun salesmen tell them that hey here's a good revolver, but you need a holster for it so nothing can touch the trigger until You pull it out.
Sorry for the rant but I've heard ran into that situation more times than I can count, and I usually say something. Especially if they have little kids, and I've even had one guy try to tell the mom that a Glock had too much pull for her 8yr old son to shoot it. So I told her to have him try to pull the trigger and when she heard the click she told that guy that whatever she did get it wouldn't be from him.
