Okay, so before anyone gets their parties all in a twist, let’s just go ahead and clear up the issue a bit. There is a specific difference between how one should approach load development for long range multi distance PRS and field style matches and how to approach when shooting 600 or 1000 yard bench rest matches. If one is arguing against the other, it’s very likely that you are both right and both wrong at the same time.
The simplest way it can be said is that field match shooters are looking for a load that is robust in both lack of variation in differing conditions and one that gives them acceptable on target results at distances from 25-1300 yards. The bench rest shooter is looking for a load that is specifically dialed in at their target distance (be that 600 yards or 1000 yards). They both start with the same basic concept to get a solid load, but the finer points of load development are different between the two.
Once you recognize those differences, then you can go ahead and argue all you want about the basic load development process.
Saw a guy at the LGS ask ask if they bore sight scopes, employee said yes, guy goes out to his vehicle and comes in with just a scope in a box, hands it to the worker, he asked where is your rifle and the guy said “ the rifle shoots great I just need the scope sighted in”. He left in a bit of a huff after all the laughter died down.
A guy who shoots 600 yard bench rest explaining the reason he was 12" low at a new range. The new range shoots to the east and normally he shoots north. Doesn't know what this phenomenon is called but knows it's a thing. He declares this phenomenon the reason his point of impact was not what he expected.

My buddy texted me this pic of his yankee hill ti suppressor. First shot of the day it blew out the side. He said it was factory 308 ammo, I believe Black hills 175. There was not barrel obstruction. Any ideas on what caused this? What are the chances of this getting warrantied? I will try to...

I was confirming dope on a new lot of ammo so had targets set up out to 300. Once he realised what I was shooting he came waddling over in his orange jacket bitching about how you aren’t allowed to shoot 22lr out that far, so I finished knocking over all my little steel animals right in front of him, packed up my gear and went home.

There's a slight bit of truth to that, but it can happen with all cartridges. Bullets can hit bone at the right angle, deflect, and travel in a direction inconsistent with their original path. It's fairly common to see, but what started as truth has been distorted over the years to make these bullets somehow capable of defying the laws of physics
