Maggie’s What's Your View II

I've been frustrated as hell at having to use a shitty Chinese steel axe, so have been hunting flea markets for an old American one to restore. My lady hit pay dirt yesterday and brought this home for me:

I drilled out the old handle and soaked the head in vinegar to loosen up the rust:

Scrubbed the rust off with steel wool, fitted a new handle and did an initial sharpening:

I'm doing some research now to see if I can identify the proof mark. Either way it was a great find. She got the axe and $5-600 shipyard choker/strap for $10

That is a very nice find, my axe won't hold an edge for shit, I swear chopping pine will dull the damn thing.

Thanks. I've seen guys really go all out polishing and buffing etc when they restore an axe. To me I like that it looks its age. As best as I can tell, it's an old Collins axe. I'm going to post it up on Arboristsite and am confident some folks over there will know a bit more of its history.

Damn nice job. Few yrs ago a buddy and I fell into a pile of heads and made'm like new again. Even painted the heads on some, put designs on them and then polyurethane'd them. They went like Hot Cakes. I think he may still have one he kept. I"ll have to see. Your Axe has some character to it that's for sure. As a side, just checked the paypal like I PM'd ya, it hasn't transferred as of yet.

Dude my lady is fucking awesome, but you are starting (just starting my friend) to make me a weee bit jealous.

Thanks man, she's something special. I got calls for work on two days this week that I was supposed to help her around the house. When I came home one of the days she'd cleared a huge brush pile and sorted fire food for me. Today she spent hours working in getting our koi pond cleared out, all the while getting ate up by mosquitoes that completely disregard 99% Deet.

Also on both of those days, instead of being pissed that I'd ditched her alone to do chores, she gave me a big hug and a kiss and told me she was proud that I was finding ways to earn some money while the job hunt continues.

I've paid my damn dues with crazy bitches that were mean to me. I guess karma finally came around. Here's a pic of her assembling a miter saw stand for me, that woman loves "some assembly required" like no one I've ever met. If a gun showed up in need of assembly she'd throw me out of the room like a bitch until she'd gotten it put together. As it is I walk in to find her timing herself doing blindfolded field stripping and reassembly on her pistol.

From last night, checking in with a lifelong friend of my son. He's staying at work in the hospital in Naples.
I saw TWC guy doing live shots near there and tried to coax the kid into making himself famous. He didn't bite.

Got an early start on the lawn this morning. This little guy apparently spent the night in the shed on my handle bar.
He stayed with for about an hour while I was broadcasting seeds.

I remembered my neighbor was deer hunting in Kentucky, so I thought I'd invite his two boys over to fish in the pond while I was doing the yard work and could look after them.
Sent him a text since I don't have his wife's cell number.
See, it's not just here. I treat everyone the same way.

Great score there Miss Bogey! I find as the years add up, those don't fit my hands as well as they used too. Both elbows rebuilt about 5 years back confirm that a striking tool is for you young fellas ;)

Oh I know buddy. For me it's shoulders and spine that remind me that I'm not a kid anymore. After about half a face cord my shoulder locked up to the point that I can't even throw a ball for the dog. Splitzilla is going to get a LOT of use, considering I burned every bit of that wood in the last 4 days.

That's a good looking axe. I've split tons of kindling and cracked tons of walnuts with one about like it.

I cut a tree yesterday that's weight was all on one side and was probably going to take out the power when the storm gets here. Half that tree fell in 04 when the last storm came through. That tree just about kicked my ass. I'll try to post photos in a day or two.

IMG_4234.JPG Normally I'm not able to shoot at distance this time of year due to the crops blocking my targets. vh20 "made" me find a spot for some steel, so I fired back up about 3 weeks ago which subsequently ran me low on 260 ammo. My view off and on over the last week or so...case prep. Hate it!

Primer pockets I can tolerate. Trimming cases dang near sends me over the edge! If I wasn't so cheap, I'd buy one of those fancy powered trimmers. Or, spend that same money on another case or two of FGMM 260 with the 142 SMK. I give up 75 fps and some vertical at 1K, that it.

You and Honey Badger stay safe down there!

They are awesome, and not really that expensive. We could probably do another fundraiser.

Okay smarty pants. We can do a "Group Buy" kinda deal, you're right. You got me on this one don't ya? :p On a serious note. You know we're gonna do something else, don'tcha? ;) It's a given. Ya, ya, ya. Just watch how many people jump on-board. I like the fact that just for shit's n giggles we can make things happen.

Coming back from a friends place and turned up a logging road to a gate to walk past a bit and scout around. Hunt'n Season upon us n stuff. Walk out and there's another rig parked. "I know these guy's". BS for few and this Owl lands by us. Then it gets closer. Was pretty epic. Yotes going in the background, and an Owl in our lap. Too funny.

My view from the kitchen window after lunch. Chucky is accompanied by my around the farm/truck gun. Savage Model 10 in 243 running a 70 grain Nosler BT at around 3350 +/- . Range was 32 yards leaning on the side of the house.

If you can find an old LRP takeoff stock they are pretty cheap and light years ahead of the shit stocks that Savage sends out from the factory.

I love messing with them during Spring turkey season.

DRT. What was the range?

She ran bout 30 yards looked like she was dragging a mop behind her. 180 yards prone at night . Rode up on her laid down made the shot. Was using elusive wildlife xlr 500 kill light. Also have red light bar mounted on UTV. When they hear you but can't see you they usually stand around for a while. All meat goes to the butcher for Hunters for the hungry.

I remember that vid. Pretty damn cool. I can't believe this one flew right in on us and then moved closer. Hung out for around 10 minutes and got bored. He didn't want a Barley Pop or a Tootsie Pop.

Got some downtime at home today and daydreaming about future projects. This one is going to cost a few. Not sure if I can pull it off or not, but been thinking about it for a few years now.

After -
A fire pit on that peninsula would be the shit on a crisp autumn night.
Boat/fishing dock and maybe a jet ski. Jet skis keep water aerated, so that's likely a tax deduction.

Tucker301 , that sounds like an excuse for a get together in the tradition of a barn raising. There's enough of us that would come spend some time clearing and excavating that your main cost would be equipment rentals and beer. All I need is some high ground in the woods to camp while we're working.

How much Tannerite do you figure it'll take to blow the levee between the new excavation and existing pond? Get 3 times that much and it'll be epic. I still have a blasters license laying around if you wanna get medieval on its ass

I had a guy look at it a few weeks ago. He is going to check the Topo maps and get back to me. He's coming to do some smaller tasks in a few weeks.

The key issues are
  • Keeping the depth under 25 feet (What he said keeps the Corps out of it)
  • Finding the proper layout in the existing topography to minimize the amount of fill dirt required for the new dam
  • Removing the existing trees
  • Keeping the existing dam intact until the new section is full, then excavating that dam out and building the peninsula (I estimate the lower section would fill over a winter/spring)
It's definitely something that has to be done in stages, starting with logging out the new section. The problem is that most local loggers aren't too motivated by 5 acres of product. Chipping would be the route to minimize the amount of crap that is left in the new hole. I want some stumps and some structure, but I don't want to get snagged every time a make a cast.
I figure the new hole is logged and carved out first, and the new dam and overflow is installed. Then, once that fills or nearly fills, a track hoe can work its way across the existing dam and use the take away material to build the peninsula.

Yeah, blowing it up would be party, but it wouldn't be very practical.

Actually you shouldn't have to do much "building" of the peninsula. The way it's laid out in the picture ideally you could do your new excavation "below" the existing pond. Let that fill up then remove half of the separating berm, leaving your peninsula of undisturbed ground. With both sides full you should have very little fast moving water to erode the peninsula when you remove half the berm. However, for convenience sake I'd situate the peninsula on the near side of the pond so your trip to and from the house is much shorter and simpler.

If you get serious about it and my employment situation hasn't changed, I'd be willing to drop the trees which just leaves equipment to skid them out. The stumps can come out during excavation. I know you're about doing things "right" , but save the money for shit that can't be worked around and handled by friends (and for a lot of meat, beer, and eye bleach for the wife when I'm bathing in the pond each evening)

That's a very generous offer that I'm going to keep on file. I'm going to wait for the leaves to get off the trees and for the ticks and chiggers to go to sleep, then get in there and take a serious look at the layout.

There's talk of a mule logger in the area, so I might see if I can track him down after I get the zone marked out. I have several ATV trails in there that should suit his needs.

Please do (re the offer).

A mule logger would would be a great option, as 5 acres could be in his wheelhouse. It may just come down to what percentage of salable timber you've got. You could potentially offset some of the costs with the timber sales.

I showed my lady some videos of mule/draft horse logging the other night and she was fascinated. She originally thought I was putting her on.

Mule logging is very cool with a well behaved team.
