Maggie’s What's Your View II

A friend of mine I've known since he was like 5 scored tonight.

Great story, and he got it. 4 arrows into it before it was 'done'. How exciting is that to shoot at one Bull? :p I know, not real quick, but nobody sets out for this scenario.

Beautiful Center Console Barney. Love that high Bow. Your Boat? And approximately where is this at? Didn't know they were in the Smelt family. I love smelt smoked or fried once or twice a year, then I'm good. :p

The boat is a Panga, belongs to my mate, mine is also centre console but aluminium and a bit shorter, that day we were at Port Victoria, South Australia http://www.portvictoria.org.au/

Just curious, Tucker: Why did you decide to have the peninsula and boat house access from the side opposite the house rather than leaving it on the same side?

I already have a dock on the house side, so I thought one over there would achieve an aesthetic balance and make a nice setting for a pic-a-nic.

One should always strive for aesthetic balance.

Not yet. Called animal control. They keep a list of farmers who have livestock in case something gets loose. They were going to check the list and then swing by the place to see if they could do anything with it. If it's still there tomorrow it may be getting processed into something delicious.

That's a good program. With all the interbreeding of feral and domestic swine the lines get pretty blurry. She looked like she could've easily been one of 1J04 's pets at home in a pen. Either way, she's made of bacon.

Just trying to do it the right way.
"Feral hogs in Virginia are defined as “any swine that are wild or for which no proof of ownership can be made” and are designated as a nuisance species per the Code of Virginia (§29.1-100)"

My view today... John O'Groats Scotland! Another End of the %#@king Earth! Damn cold today. Even all my layers did not fight off the damp. But I'll add another layer tomorrow... headed back South now towards Cambridge.

Cheers,

Sirhr

I don't know what your itinerary on the return is, but if you meander down the Channel coast, Bury St Edmunds has a great regimental museum, fine fare at The Angel, and a place where you can make your own distillation of gin. 30 minutes to the south, there's Lavenham, which is full of medieval architecture.

Another Hell Week for Riley. Intensive therapy every day this week. Leaves home at 6:15 every morning. Not too easy on mom either, because dad is in training and can't lend a hand.

I'm sorry to hear that Tucker. I can't imagine what that entire family goes through "Daily" just to make it to the next one. They gotta be top notch folks. Best to them all !!!!!

As I've mentioned before, I have been blessed with 2 normal, healthy, very active kids that wear me out. I can't imagine having a pair with special needs. Certainly a brutal schedule and my hats off to their parents.

Sounds like a good idea, and you have a great vantage point. Drop 'em where they stand Big.

there is another 25 acre field around to the right ,,in 16 years living here I have killed 38 off the porch not counting the ones I killed hunting them and the others I killed deer hunting,,seems like every time they hear the tractor with hay mower or bushhog they come running,,I killed 2 last week and the buzzards had them in less than 2 hours,,

I knew there was something about that damned gnome.

They've figured out a bush hog and hay mower provides food. I've had them bounce around like a yard dog within 30 yds of the tractor.

Hey buddy, I think someone asked you before what saw you're running. Is that a 288?

Yeah, that was me that asked. We sure zero in on the same things a lot, don't we? I see he already gave you the answer.

I don't know what it is about Huskies. I'd 3 to 1 rather have a Stihl trimmer, blower, pole saw, hedge trimmer, you name it. But when it comes to a chainsaw, I just want a commercial-grade Husky, every time. I guess I've got no good reason, other than that's all we ever ran growing up, and they just were bullet proof. The Stihl saws I've been exposed to were consumer-grade, and just sucked. Not a fair comparison, though.

I'm with you, but come at it from a slightly different angle right now. When I made a living with a chainsaw cutting line for surveyors all we had were pro Stihls and a full time guy maintaining them for us. I beat the brakes off of Stihl pro saws and loved them. My old 026 went missing in my absence and the best I could lay my hands on with absolutely zero notice for one of my trees down in my neighbor's yard were a couple of mid consumer level Huskies. They're "okay" and I'm getting a lot more out of them now that I switched off of ANSI chains and went to chisel (not square), but I remember how much I loved the torque of a Stihl pro.

I'm hunting a "big" saw, something capable of pulling a 32" maybe bigger, and keep looking at old Husky 288s or maybe a newer model in the mid 80 to 90cc, or switching back to Stihl for the bigger saw and going 461, 660, or something along those lines.

The old 288 keeps coming up as a superstar of Husqvarna's older lineup. Definitely won't use it every day, but I hate looking at downed trees and thinking "nah, too much for what I've got".

I would imagine your experience with them was very similar to mine with the consumer-level Stihls. The commercial Huskies give you the feeling you've got a tiger by the tail and you'd better hang on. I'm sure the commercial Stihls do as well, I just haven't had the opportunity to run one.

My experience is that both the pro level saws by Husky and Stihl are top notch. I have a good friend in the tree service business that shoots here, and he runs both, day in and day out. He has minor complaints about both, but nothing earth shattering. I have 4 saws, all Stihl, and all bit one are pro grade. I'm not a fan boy by any means. I own Stihl simply for the logistics of common parts, premix, and a fantastic dealer just 20 minutes away. Same reason we have all Deere equipment.

Get a 4 something Stihl or go big with a 660. My 441 pulls a 26" bar through dead standing Oak with nary a care. Not to say a big Husky wouldn't either (see post above). Both are great saws. Keep 'em sharp and let the saw do the work. One positive on the new(er) saws is they are built to run the junk gas being offered these days. Less carb problems, and that's a good thing.

Hmmmmmm. Perfect. Tucker's not home, his laptop appears to be still on and logged in, and I've got something to deposit in the Litter Box after I polish off some Almond Roca. :p

I have a 455 and a 359 to cut firewood and "thought" the 359 was a stout saw until I went and helped a friend of mine fell a couple trees and he had just bought a new 570 and a 395XP,,that 395 with a 24" bar is a sawin SOB.

When I cut timber I used a 394xp (I believe this was the model prior to the 395). Bitch would eat whiteoak, hickory, locust, ... didn't care. Hated carrying it on rough ground but was proud to have it once cutting.

TNichols mentioned having a good stihl shop nearby. That's probably the best qualifier for picking a brand IMHO.

I've run across a few 394xp's and they're appealing, but some of my research indicated they were prone to fussiness when trying to re-start them hot. A saw that gets fussy in the heat is obviously a no go where I'm at. The 576 or 390 may be a possibility.

I have a dealer a few miles away that sells both Stihl and Husky pro series. It's a very fun shop to walk into for no reason at all other than to see two whole walls of badass saws available to play with. I just can't justify a new saw in that range, hence the hunt for the right deal on a used one.

That was mid 90's and I don't know when they changes models; any 394's out there may be getting long in the tooth. I only have exp with two 394's. One I used and another at a mill that was just used to trim oak buttcuts to get them to roll onto the carriage. Of those, never saw any issues, but that was NC mountains where summers were only hot (~90*) for maybe a week or two per year.

I'd ask around to see if you know someone that's got a compression gauge if shopping for used. They may be cheap enough to just buy one, I don't know. I kind of have the hots for a big saw too, even though the most I tend to use a saw for anymore is cutting 4 wheeler trails and downed limbs on fences, but this place isn't exactly the kind of place where men tend to think "I really don't need one, so I won't get that ...". :)

thats why I switched to the Husqvarna saws,,the local Stihl mechanics suck and the guys at the local Husqvarna shop are top of the line,,,,I am kinda hard on equipment and the 455 I use the most is 10 years old and I have had no problems other than the primer bulb needed replacing,,

and yeah trash the chain that comes on any new saw and get one made to cut instead of grind,,

Came home to a couple of goodies at the door:

Thanks to tnichols I had to own a few Bug A Salts for myself. The other gizmo was the freebie hydraulic filter for Splitzilla.

A few hours later I got a call that Splitzilla was at the freight terminal. Got I home a little bit ago:

Assembly should be tomorrow, weather permitting.

Someone's got some work to do. The grin going across my face right now is HUGE. Can't stop chuckling. This is going to get hella epic real quick. Have fun ya deplorable bastard !!!

Good start on the Documentary !!!!

So, I'm headed over to my buddies place with 20 new rds for his 300 WinMag he just got back from the Smith. Starting from scratch on load development this late in the year for hunting is not where I like to be 'ever' and he's none too happy either.

So I'm damn near there and I see another buddy that has a place down there where we enjoy popping a few rounds off out to 625 in the backyard. I slow down to stop and am rolling down my window when I notice he's not gonna stop and BS for a minute and he just waves kinda nonchalantly. I'm like Jimmy ain't happy. Could tell cuz he's a pretty close friend. So I drive by his place and see some rope up on his driveways blocking everyone out. Uh oh.......

lz1JnQJ.jpg

So I mosey down to the end of the road and a few friends are gathered at my other buddies place and are grinding up some fresh Elk meat into Burger. I ask my buddy "what's up with Jimmy"? He's headed out, didn't stop to BS, and he's got his driveway blocked off. What's up? He mad? My buddy sez "You haven't heard"? Heard? Heard what? Someone came down and 'salted' his driveway with 1000's and 1000's of about 8 different size nails and screws !! Whaaaa? He's headed to Astoria to get a couple rolling magnets. Oh fuck.

He got the Sheriffs Office down there to take a report and take pictures and get what little intel he could give'm. Very very bad move on "someone's" part. It goes without saying, you fuck with one of us, you just fucked with "ALL" of us. What a fucking mess. And this guy is the nicest guy you've ever met. He's done A LOT for everyone around here and we've in return done a shit load of work for him. Can't really say much more. I'm certain it will all work out just fine in the 'end'. ;)

So we got personnel to do him a large, drop everything, and head down there. 6 of us did the FOD walk down from hell in record time and were done before he got back. It was like an Easter Egg Hunt, but different. Oh the conversation we had while stooped over digging around for all these little fuckers, large and small. The rain showers were just an added bonus......

My buddy is a nice guy otherwise I wouldn't have anything to do with him. Some of the other folks are damn good people too, until they're not. God have mercy on their soul, that's all I can say.

And yes, he came back with his rolling magnets and found a couple more, was proud as hell, and Beer'd us accordingly. ;)

How's that for fucked up?

Roofing nails aren't very magnetic...
This would be a declaration of war.
