Maggie’s What's Your View II

Almost kicked my ass..almost.

Half broke out during the last hurricane in '04. Remaining was leaning and all it's weight toward power lines. I figured I'd cut it before the storm dropped it on the power. I was almost 1st in line to get power restored... All worked out in the end.

Was it partially down already? I hate cutting them down when the leaves are still on them.

From the looks of that stump I'd say he took that bitch down from standing. Even with that big Husky that had to have been at least a 5 on the pucker-meter.

MtnCreek , were you able to get a pull on it? Felling wedges to keep it from settling on the bar? Just pure balls and saw speed?

I had two ropes in it with come-alongs. One rope broke and it sat back, but I got the saw out before tearing anything up. More ropes, more come-alongs, truck, tractor and a couple trips up the scary bastard on a ladder later, I got it headed back the right way. I HATE ladders.

Edit: An wedges. You can see the marks from the wedges just below the saw.

Damn, what a bitch. But I feel a lot better now. If you'd said "nah, just a standard notch and back cut, bitch fell right where I wanted her, didn't even pinch the bar" then I'd have been mailing you a case of beer and my man card.

Just curious, Tucker: Why did you decide to have the peninsula and boat house access from the side opposite the house rather than leaving it on the same side?

Leaners are spooky in my book. Compression, tension, etc... Glad you had ropes in it. Was the angle on the back cut an attempt to get it to go/tip a certain way? Not digging on you, just curious. Be safe tipping that big stuff, it'll squish you like a bug if it goes wrong. Never leave an ugly stump ;).

Its an optical illusion. :-D

Five minutes after I was out there, two yearlings in the clover. One had gone back into the woods before I could get the camera setup.

Great catch. Sure was enjoying the goodies. You've got yourself your own private Zoo buddy. So damn cool.

I define this as a safe, happy, warm space. Can't put my finger on the why, though.

On the way home. The photo doesn't do it justice, as I had lost a bit of the setting sunlight that limned the clouds.

You see these things and it reaffirms your belief in something other than what laboratories measure and report.

Very cool railing, and an exquisite evening as well. Hell, you even pulled over. I'm proud of your safety concerns and hope at some point to follow in your footsteps. :p Seriously, that's a damn nice shot and I can only imagine what it looked like real time.

  1. Rogaine. LOTS of it.
  2. ...

No . But, vh20 made me find a spot to hang one. It's at 1,065 yards, so just right for the 260. That distance keeps me honest anyway.

They are not going to make silage out of the field adjacent to us for the first time in years. They had one of their farms 2 miles to the northwest of us get hail pretty bad at the tassel stage that they will chop instead. Sets back the opening of my range back another 2-3 weeks as combining will come later. There are worse things.

photo71989.jpg Took the day to ourselves and went to the beaches on a recon mission.
First stop was to visit with Winter the dolphin in Clearwater.
Headed south along the beaches and stopped at Fort Desoto. The park was closed so we watched a group of families with their dogs playing in the water.
Back on the road south across the Sunshine Skyway bridge and heading towards Bradenton. Once in Bradenton, we had an early dinner of roasted chicken at Basil's. Nom, nom.
Turned west towards Anna Maria Island for a couple hours of sun worship.
Just going to share one photo of my lovely wife Rebecca coming back in my direction.
All in all, it was a relaxing day and a stealthy way to check out water clarity post Irma.
Looks like I'll be on the water no later than Tuesday...

Managed to get out fishing yesterday with a good mate, got a nice feed of King George Whiting.

Beautiful Center Console Barney. Love that high Bow. Your Boat? And approximately where is this at? Didn't know they were in the Smelt family. I love smelt smoked or fried once or twice a year, then I'm good. :p

Never a dull moment around this place.
I think if i saw a T Rex in this yard I would only be 70% surprised.

Two thoughts. Either ring her or she'll airiate your lawn in a way that you would not be pleased with, OR, whole hog sausage. The choice is yours.

Miss Lori has been super busy this week putting up canned goods for the winter. Apple juice, grape juice, sweet and kosher dill pickles, marinara, pizza sauce, pears, apple pie filling, etc... All of this grown right here on our little slice of hell. I thought about giving her grief that all of this can be purchased at our local grocery store, but decided to keep my mouth shut considering I still reload 308. I have cases of FGMM sitting in my ammo room for a rainy day. Maybe it's the hunter/gatherer instinct, or, just the fact that you have the ability. Either or, my view...
