Maggie’s What's Your View II

Using those cider blocks like that is pretty sharp.

Thanks man. Coming from a fellow Redneck Engineer that means a lot. I've got a lot of moisture and termites here, so it keeps the wood a bit higher off the ground. If I weren't using pressure treated wood they'd be really cheap, but it's still an affordable way to store a good bit of wood. As the pile grows I just build a new one off the front and my cutoffs are just the right size to screw them together so it gets more stable the bigger the pile. It's tough to see but I can access the oldest pile from the back side as well if I get too far ahead of myself and need some wood with a bit more seasoning. As I mentioned above I'd easily be into a third rack if I weren't such a pyro.

That was the pile a few days ago, I'm still stacking at the moment, but I burn 20 pieces or so per night so it ebbs and refills. I build those racks to hold a half cord per "layer" so if all of those were a true 16" in length that'd be about 3/4 of a cord or so. I've easily burned a face cord in the last month, and had at least a face cord of splits that were too punky or infested with termites to throw on the pile.

Compared to your stash that isn't even a kindling pile.

Looking good Bogey! Nice.

It's been an interesting week around here for me, so I'll consolidate and compress it all into a few pictures and words.

Got word last Wednesday that most beloved Aunt passed away at 90. She'd been severely debilitated for the past 7 years after a stroke, and was living out her days in an assisted living facility. As best as I could ever tell, those folks took amazing care of her and God bless them and others like them for all they do. Her one and only daughter, pictured below, has been amazing as well, seeing her nearly every day and taking her out for day trips. This passing is both a blow and a relief to her I am sure.

Rolling back the clock to I'm guessing the early 50's, and they were as sporting a couple as Hollywood ever served up.

Uncle Harry being a perfect showboat, and Aunt Elaine pretending to just not give a damn.

LGyqWGX.jpg

At the funeral, her daughter and some of her favorite second cousins wore vintage hats from my grandmother and my aunt in tribute to the strong women who made these families of ours possible. I have seen both work tobacco and gardens with picks and hoes, and I have seen both dressed to kill and looking like Cinderella headed to the ball.
Despite being a skilled attorney and having to want for much, Susan (left) has not had an easy go of it.
First marriage was a wreck.
Second marriage was storybook, and they were crazy about each other. He died suddenly in his sleep at 50. She was devastated, but she pushed onward.
Married once more, and that was another failure. She's embracing her old maid status now and finds little to no use for romance.
Those two younguns are full of energy and are taking the world head on. The middle one just moved to NYC and is working for a smoking hot investment firm that juts launched. The one on the left is in college still. Good kids.

My dad and his brother reminisce and share a story or two about their childhood days. I believe they were discussing walking over a mile through a blizzard to be in the church Christmas program when they were 8 and 10. They both have good sharp minds and good health. Not doing too badly for 87 and 85.

A little R&R Monday afternoon for me.

FINALLY got some Fall weather the last couple of days, and the crisp morning air fogs up with the heat leaving the pond. The sun burns it off as soon as it leaves the shadows.
This morning.

7VYVQJg.jpg

Yesterday afternoon I was watching the geese at the pond, when two deer caught my eye. They were looking at something and acting spooky.
Just then, a gorgeous red fox streaked across the yard, spooked the deer and the geese.
I watched out for him last night, but never saw him again.

So this afternoon I was in my home office on a phone call. I look out the door and see something reddish brown popping up and down in the drainage pipe that runs under the driveway about 50 yards from the house. WTF is that?!
Then I realized it was that red fox, scoping out the terrain before coming all the way out of the culvert.

I'll call you right back....

17 HMR to the head and he's done.

Good looking little guy, but still in summer phase and not a very thick pelt. My neighbor the taxidermist came and got him. I figured he could use it for parts if needed.

Still shopping for hats and getting ready to vote for Katie tonight (thread in Bear Pit). It's proving difficult to find a cap the right size for my buddy. Might have to go the upholstery shop and see if they can put something together from one of them Realtree sofas you see on tv.

Nice story line Tuck, thanks very much, really enjoyed it.

Hats off to family/friends, that’s what’s important.

Thanks for sharing the family story, great background info, and photos Tucker. Very cool and appreciate ya taking the time to put this together for us. One helluva post. Now that just makes ya feel good.

That is a stud of a goat!!! 6.5? Distance, Bone length, and most importantly name and address of the cute one 3rd from the left. That one's got a naughty look in it's eye.;).

6.5CM pushing factory ELD-Xs. We spotted him right at 1,000 yards. After walking to within 550 the kestrel was showing the wind changing from 12 to 20ish. I am not at all accustomed to shooting in this kind of wind. Crawled to 460, and I still felt too uncomfortable with the wind to take the shot. Another 100 yards on my belly and I could get no closer without being spotted as the group of pronghorn were on a hill just above me. Finding an opening in the sage I was fortunate to get a decent prone position, then bang flop.

There were a number of Great Pyrenees watching over the object of your desire, so I am not likely to get any contact information without causing a stir. But I can give you gps coordinates, if you're up to the task. I didn't take any measurements, but we'll see when he gets back from the taxidermist. I suspect he'll go about 74 1/2 inches, the smallest of the ones my party took. He had some nice battle scars and had been around for more than a few years. Here is what part of him looked like about an hour ago.

Brother you live large. Very nice dish man. Great job right there. Good for you knowing the limits and not wounding the animal.
Can't remember for certain but maybe 2 yrs ago you posted up a great goat hunt. That was a 6.5CM kill as well I believe, hence my guess. ;)
Great story. If that's the small one you guys are into some hella genetics. I don't know squat about goats. Never hunted them. But I know a decent size one when I see it.
Thanks for sharing Moses.

1J04, no more posts till the wapiti is in the freezer. If you have energy to screw around on the internet with all the weirdos here, you obviously didn't hunt hard enough!

Moses, what is that on the R side of the plate with the chimchurri sauce? Does look delicious. Im gonna have to learn how to post pics so I can show of some of the grub I throw together.

As a fellow Wash'tonian....Yeah, right.....(maybe since Wednesday......). Have a good weekend guys !

lol Ya, weird right now. And last few days. Storm like hell then beautiful blue sky. I'll put some pics up later of heading to Astoria for an appt and then the difference in just 2 hrs. Crazy shit. Nothing unusual for this damn place.

My view from a few minutes ago. The only time I've gotten "got" by a crab worse than this was when one got me all the way through my thumb and thumbnail.

IMG_2002.JPG

We didn't catch enough crabs to cook up, so I was letting them go. I momentarily lost my grip on this sucker and he capitalized on it. He caught a tendon or something and completely froze my hand. My budddy was trying to pry him loose with a knife with no luck ( and the risk of cutting my wrist ) all the while the sumbitch was pinching harder (which I didn't think was possible) when we messed with him. I couldn't keep control of him with my hand frozen, so he damn near got a finger with his other claw. I was able to block his other claw with some needlenose. Thankfully I had some side-cutters handy and my podnah was able to cut the claw, which I still had to pull loose. I was half expecting to start bleeding like a pig once the pressure was released but he didn't get anything important.

Somedays I'm the dog, this evening I was the hydrant.

I figure it's only fair they get payback every now and then. Ya gotta love food that fights back, and wins, from time to time.

That's the ole Crab handshake right their. ;). Nothing fun bout that when they score one for the crustacean team. Glad it's no worse man.
Now where's the butter?

Now where's the butter?

Funny you should mention the butter. Immediately prior to that I was picking crabs and putting meat away and had my bowl of garlic butter to enjoy some of the tasty bits that weren't worth fighting into a bowl. I firmly believe it's impossible to sit and pick crabs for hours without stealing some delicious morsels for yourself.

A shout out out to my lady: I was in the middle of picking meat when my buddy showed up to go run traps so she (who learned to pick/eat blue crab 2-3weeks ago) sat and finished picking the last of them for me while I went out to the river. How do you say enough great things about a woman who's new to the South and will hand you rotten fish, dig for bait worms, and process crabs for you?

You can't. You can't but help yourself, nor shouldn't even try, nor can you say enough about a good woman and friend. Good for both of you mister;).

So this was on the way to Astoria yesterday. Squalls n Wind.

Can barely make out the Astoria/Megler Bridge.

I don't usually take pics of my kills. Don't ask me why, I don't know, I just don't usually do it. Usually to busy getting the chores done I guess. Thought I'd share a blast from the past a buddy of mine sent me the other day. Won't bore ya with the story, but they died about 8 yds apart 21 yrs ago this this season. Remember when you were invincible? :(

And no. I'm not the asshole who spined my Bull. That honor goes to Lucas McCain behind me when he seen it trying to get up and shooting through the grass at it. How many times can you yell "HE'S DOWN" !!!! before he's outta boolits? 3. Exactly 3 times.

Well why was he getting up in the first place????
hehehee

Bogey, thats awesome. It is easy to appreciate a great lady after you had the other and then have an awesome one around.
Next friday when my girlfriend's kids go to their dad's and mine goes to her mom's for the weekend, I am teaching her to shoot handguns, first time ever.
She is from TX, most amazing gal ever, and just didnt grow up around guns. She was the one who said she wants to learn and asked if I could teach her. Usually I would have someone else teach as it is a high intensity situation that can cause undue stress on a relationship and she is so smart, mellow, and no BS it seems like a good idea. The best part is I have planned dinner after at a great BBQ joint for my lady who loves awesome brisket.
I am secretly hoping she wants to steal one or two of my pistols to make her own......

Hooterville Drivers Education this afternoon. Wore out ol' Dodge farm truck and "Level B Maintenance" roads. It's fun AND they are learning to drive the way God and Henry Ford intended, with the REAR wheels!

Thanks powdahound76 , you're exactly right about appreciating a good one and kissing her ass after suffering through some bad ones. I too have generally preferred to have someone else teach my woman, but this one's a rarity and listens to me, trusts me, and believes that I know what I'm doing. That sounds like a great day planned.

tnichols , that view brings back some wonderful memories in my old man's LTD on washed out red clay roads. You can bet those afternoons will be with your daughter for the rest of her life.
