When SHTF, I'm coming to your house

1st rule of war. NEVER underestimate your opponent.

5. Siege of Drepana – 249 – 241 BC

Taking place during the First Punic War, Drepana was a naval stronghold for the Carthaginian forces. The Carthaginian forces put up a strong fight, even managing to destroy the Roman naval blockade, allowing support to make its way to the besieged port. But the Romans returned with a rebuilt fleet and destroyed the Carthaginian fleet, ending the War and the Siege after eight years.

4. Siege of Thessalonica 1422 – 1430

When the Byzantine Palaiologoi dynasty attempted to incite rebellion amongst the Ottoman army, the Ottoman Sultan responded by launching an assault on the city of Thessalonica. Despite their lack of supplies, the Venetians managed to hold out against the Ottomans for eight years before the city was finally taken and subjected to three days of pillage and destruction.

3. Siege of Ishiyama Honganji 1570 – 1580

Fought between the warlord Oda Nobunaga and the Ikkō-ikki monks in modern day Japan, the Siege was Oda’s attempt to defeat the network of fortifications belonging to the monks. After building fortresses, attempting to starve the Ikki as well as frontal attacks, Oda finally brought the Ikki to the negotiations table when their supplies and allies were all but spent, an incredible 10 years after the siege began.

2. Fall of Philadelphia 1378 – 1390

When the Byzantine civil war turned disastrous, the Emperor Manuel II Palaiologos promised the city of Philadelphia to the Turks. However, the residents of Philadelphia were not so keen on this idea and managed to resist the invaders for an impressive 12 years before the city was finally taken by the Turkish forces.

1. Siege of Candia 1648 – 1669

Taking place in the 17th Century, the Seige of Candia was a conflict between the Ottoman Empire and the Venetian ruled city. After the Knights of Malta attacked an Ottoman convoy, the Ottoman’s responded by sending 60,000 troops to Candia, where the Knights had landed with the loot. Although the Ottoman forces were ultimately successful, the Venetians held out for a massive 22 years, making it the longest siege in history.

I don't think anyone in here will turn away a single mother and her 2 little kids that came knocking on your door for help if that day ever comes.
And if i have cool neighbors ,i'm sure that the resources can be shared and the fact their is strength in numbers .
Beyond that ,their will be a very large caliber ELR rig to send a message to WTB trouble makers coming around.
Family and good friends (WELCOMED) just be able to contribute and bring whatever food and water you can...don't forget guns and ammo

If I know who they are, there is no question. A strange woman with two kids show up on my doorstep out in the woods where I live. I'm thinking it's an Intel mission by a group of bastards intent on plunder.
Then again maybe I'm paranoid from reading dystopian apocalyptic novels.

Maybe just a little lol,
But you brought up a very good point..they could be decoys...but then again you would have to be a pretty fucked up asshole to put your wife and kids in arms way.

To your point:
There will be plenty of F'ed up assholes running around.
They will tend to flock together.
You said she was single....now you suppose she is married. I say she is widdowed and is simply trying to feed her kids the best way she knows how. A woman will do anything for her children....anything.
There are plenty of men that will send their "woman" into a Lions den in an all in bet. I don't personally know any, and I'm betting you don't. You and I(I'm assuming a lot, no offense) live in a relatively insulated world where loyalty, honor, decency aren't just words. This is due to the fact that we do not keep company with the dregs of society.

It'll get real ugly, real quick, on a scale that no novel could have prepared us for.

Yeah after the local resources dry up,i'm sure things will get real ugly quick.
I remember a number of years back over here we had a little earthquake and some worker at the power plant panicked and pull the swicth and killed the power to a good part of the island and people just went crazy, store shelves were emptied within hours.we were without power for about 2-3 days.
I remember that afternoon,i was sitting at starbucks having an afternoon drink and all the havoc started . people were running around like chickens with their heads cut off.

If I may expound, as I've done a lot of reading and enjoying the responses in this thread so far.
I will use me as an example and not assume your position in society, but apply this metric to your life and your location to come up with your own metric.

In my day to day I interact with few strangers. Once a week I stop at a fuel station. A couple times a week I stop at a grocery store. I may from time to time go to a department store, or Pallet-o-TP wharehouse.
My wife and I enjoy a meal out from time to time....maybe 3-4 times a month. I know from statistics, as the crowd of people I'm around gets larger, my chance of "an incident" greatly increases. Also, I tend to keep odd hours to avoid crowds; early supper, 0700 Pallet-o-Store...always, early or late grocery run, fuel up at 0600 when the QP opens, etc. Avoid bad neighborhoods at all times.

Even though I know an incident in a crowd of people is very low, I do not put myself in that spot, why would I if I don't have to?
IF....there were an incident, there is a hospital minutes away, a trauma chopper minutes away, ambulance minutes away. Help. Will. Come.
Every interaction with a stranger, carries a very, very, very low possibility of death. Even in a bad neighborhood, my chances of dying while interacting with a stranger are relatively low. This is the world we live in, we are comfortable here, we are relatively relaxed even for people with a heightened awareness.

Say the balloon goes up.
It gets really simple, so I can be far more brief.
3 -7 days
Fuel station, Pallet-o-Store, grocery....forget it unless you are willing to kill or be killed.
No help is coming, they are busy, trust me.
You are on your own.
"I'm armed to the nines"." Good, you damn well better be. That panhandler you gave a dollar 3 days ago, will now beat you to death with a stick in the broad daylight for your wedding ring.
At this point EVERY interaction with a stranger implies very high risk of ending badly, depending on your status, worth, location, hell just the way you look. And it will be for all the marbles.....
A no help is coming. No cavalry. No chopper. No ambulance.

A lot depends on the exact situation, but if things go south and it stops being everybody working together to help the community and becomes looting and killing and raiding, then you best not open the door for any female looking type, that will most likely be a trap to get you killed.

If I know who they are, there is no question. A strange woman with two kids show up on my doorstep out in the woods where I live. I'm thinking it's an Intel mission by a group of bastards intent on plunder.

^^^^^^^^
This guy gets it!

I'll be staying the hell away from anything female when things go down badly & most likely be treating them as emissaries of Satan.
If the women want help well then they shouldn't have spent the past 50 years helping to destroy the country and voting in communists.

True but I think they will look more like the lower right, only with a lot less muscle

When I order beef it seems I may be getting something different according to the above chart. Seems I am eating modest human marbling. Never knew it was that good, or legal. ?

The one I love is when they say "I am headed to the mountains when the SHTF"
You and 10 million others, good luck with that.

I live in the Mountains, and good luck getting here in the Winter when the plows are not moving snow off the roads because the plow drivers are home taking care of family, or there's no fuel to keep them running. Outside of Winter, I'm driving 20-some miles down the Valley, and dropping some huge trees across the road in the Canyon with a Chainsaw. So no one is driving in any farther than that.

In all seriousness, it will be very difficult to travel, or even survive during the Winter here. I live at 8000+-ft, Sub-Alpine where the snow depth is measured in feet, not inches. All the Elk and Deer have migrated to lower elevations miles away. Most of the Cattle that Ranchers have are gone to be either slaughtered or Winter pastured in another area. Other than the food stores you may have stocked up, hunting game will be your only other resource, and the wild game will be almost non-existent for most. There are Snowshoe Hares, Grouse, and a few other smaller game animals in very limited numbers, and unless you're willing to hunt and live on snowshoes, you're going to starve. I have nowhere to Bug Out to, so I will have to make the best of it, and try to rely on the community and local resources to barter or trade with, but in the end everyone will be starving.

I know (or recognize) most of my neighbors. It would be highly unlikely an unfamiliar face would show up at my doorstep. So defense of my home would be easy.

Other than food, I think I'm set on everything else. Have a wood burner, a lifetime supply of firewood, so staying warm and cooking is not an issue. Without electricity to get water from the well, will require melting snow, or walking to the creek with buckets when the snow is gone. Just hope I don't break a leg.

Honestly, I'm so far out, we will never see the big wave of people from the city because the interstate with be a huge traffic jam, and the few people who make it in will soon realize they need to keep moving in order to survive. And the few tourist in the area when the SHTF will, I believe will likely want to try to get back to home and family, and may get stuck somewhere in-between or elsewere trying to do so.

I dought in the worse case senieros, none of my family or close friends will be getting out of the big city.

My worst fear is traveling somewhere, and having the SHTF when I'm on the road, or while visiting relatives in the big city over Christmas. At least I'll have firepower with me as I mostly travel for Matches, and after reading this thread, I need to start carrying a pistol and bug out bag more often with me when not traveling for a match.

Was thinking about it, but my well is 425-ft, not sure what the static level is at?

The SimplePUMP
Installs in almost all wells

To 325′ water level

Dramatically less effort

Pump to pressure tank

Costs less
