Which 223 bolt rifle for long range?

I'm looking for a bolt rifle in 223 Rem to shoot at 600+ yds. I'm using 77 and 80grn Sierra bullets. Is there a good shootin' "reasonably" priced rifle out there? All the less expensive Savage and Remingtons I've seen have slow twist barrels. Please help. Thanks!

sell the heavy threaded barrel for at least 150.00ish id think
buy a criterian varmitor bull contour for 300.00 7 twist
223, 223ai,
you'll have 600.00ish in a sweet set up

Great idea! Do I need any special tools to switch the barrel? Go & no go guages, Barrel vice, wrench of some kind?

you can buy the needed tools for under 100.00
& you can buy go no go gauges
but I use a FL sized brass & a spent primer to set headspace
or better yet
ask around on here and if there are any Savage shooter who live near you
that might help you out
good group here for the most part

I couldn't find anything factory built that was suitable for shooting 223s that heavy. That's why I just decided to rebarrel my Surgeon with a 1/7 Brux barrel. Now if the barrel would just get here ...

My Savage LRPV 9 twist in 223 loves 75gr Amax out to 1000 yards. Buddy has a 7 twist and he's using the 80 gr to 1000.

You may want to consider a Savage LRPV. They are available with a 1-7 twist, and most I've had experience with shoot great.

They have a lot of nice features - Savage RBLP target action, target accutrigger, and HS stock.

I picked up my Tac on gunbroker for a steal. 20" 1:8 twist. The varmint has a 24" 1:8 twist if you want a little longer barrel.

The action on the Tikka blows the 700 out of the water in my opinion.

I can't comment on accuracy just yet. I'm working on loads right now. Everyone says they shoot like lasers. I've only put a few crap rounds down range at 100 so far with mine.

I think the Remington's only get up to a 1:9 twist. If you're going long, you're probably going to want more twist than that.

The Remington's only go to 1-9. You have to watch models you get some are 1-12. I had a XCR LRT 1-9 that shot lights out with 55vmax and 69smk. I never tried anything heavier.

One thing to note my 80 grain load works above ~45 degrees below that I have obvious stability issues. I have not tried the 75 Berger VLD in extreme cold, but it was working fine on the 45 degree day I tested last year and it will shoot 69 and 77 in all weather conditions I see, I was doing some load testing on a new 1-9 Remington when it was down near 0.

But a faster twist of 8 or 7 would be better suited.

I'd go this route, but get a Light Varmint contour Criterion instead of a Bull...no need for all that extra weight for a 223 IMO. I have a 22" 1:7 light varmint 223AI Criterion and it hammers with the 80gr A-Max.

I'd also ditch the tupperware stock that the Hog Hunter comes with and get at least a Bell & Carlson A2 Medalist, if not a Manners or McMillan.

I too would get a savage (any base model will do, even the stevens) and get a 1/7" twist criterion barrel. Throw on any decent stock and scope and you'll have a heck of .223 on your hands. That's basically what I'm doing but my money always seems to get spent on other things.

savage does make 2 diff 7 twist 223 for around 800.00ish with a lam stock & dbm
& 1100.00ish With a H&S stock in single shot configeration
Ive seen the cheapest Stevens actions shoot as well as the target actions
but the H&S stock sure is nice
but if you get the Hog hunter & the tools, you can allways build more Savages later
and who knows you might change your mind and want another caliber
with a Sav_Stevens -its just a barrel & bolthead away -if you allredy have the tools
the Hog hunter stock aint that bad IMHO- pillar bedded & free floated allready
the trigger is better than triggers costing 10 times as much- Ive tried both..
you can buy the top $ one
or buy a cheap one & customize it for less
both will shoot the same
like SAVAGES!!
