Hey guys I really didnt want to start a "which would you pick" thread, but I would like some expert opinons on this one. I am in the market for a new handgun. I currently have a S&W airlite 357 mag and M&P9. I have a threaded barrel for the M&P and a suppressor pending per ATF currently.

Which ever I choose I want to be able to CC the gun also. Here's what I've been looking at:

<span style="font-weight: bold">- Sprindfield Champion Operator </span>
I've always wanted a 1911 and a .45 so the springfield would fill that but I've shot a Springer GI before and wasnt that impressed would the champion operator shoot/handle better?

<span style="font-weight: bold">- Sig P229 Elite Dark with tb</span>
I prefer the higher capacity and ability to have a 2nd host for my suppressor that the sig provides.

Re: Which handgun would you pick?

If you didn't like the full size springer than I'd say stay away from the champion. Don't know anything about the P229. Good luck with you choice.

Re: Which handgun would you pick?

The P229 is good pistol. I've moved away from the traditional DA/SA trigger but there's nothing wrong with it, just takes a little more discipline in trigger manipulation. (It's easy to let too far off the trigger on the 2nd and following rounds which will give you a lot of slack to pull thru.) But good training and practice will cure it. You can get DAO trigger in the P229 but I like the DA/SA better.

The P229 is more durable than the P228 and the P228 is a very battle proven pistol. I have a P226 (big brother to the P228/P229) that has probably 80,000 rounds thru it.

I agree with Rosie; if you don't like the full size 1911, stay away from the champion. my .02

Re: Which handgun would you pick?

Talk about two very different options! Big, slow projectile (.45) vs. small, fast projectile (9mm). For CC purposes most will tell you the 9mm is the only barely accpetable while the .45 is a far better choice. I tend to disagree and think there is good 9mm self defense ammo that makes up for some/enough of the shortcomings of the 9mm round.

My vote is for the Sig. That said, I suggust you shoot both and choose based on experience. Or better yet, buy both. They'll both hold value and you can sell off the one you find yourself not using/carrying. My .02.

The P229 also comes in .40S@W and .357Sig

Yeah I know, but he said he wanted another host for his pending 9mm can...hence me opening up a potentially endless "which caliber is best" debate...probably a bad idea...

Re: Which handgun would you pick?

I have never been disappointed with my MC operator. I like it better than pretty much every Springfield 1911 that I've handled. Even the TRP's.

It's full size. Not too much rail as to not work with holsters. None of that full length guide rod garbage. Ambi safety and simple.

Of course I changed the mainspring housing out to a MARs magwell one. And I changed the FCG out to a Vickers Blueforce FCG.

Changed the trigger components because I like messing around. Original trigger felt great and is actually in my dedicated 1911 .22lr.

Re: Which handgun would you pick?

I love my P229 in .40 S&W. I carry a P-228 for work, but love the slightly heavier round out of the P-229. If you want 12 round capacity (in .40). I also like the fact that it's Double Action/Single Action with no external safties. I love 1911's, but for work and personal carry I love my Sigs. The downside is that the double stack guns are a little wider and require a little heavier/bigger concealment garment.
