I think most of the guys here have adequately covered the whole house option, so i'll limit my response to this.
First, unless you have a large gas supply driven by the local municipality, standby generator will eat through a propane tank fast, and a deisel tank is expensive and you deal with algae problems a lot,, food for thought.
Second.... WELDER... MILLER TRAILBLAZER 302, or PIPELINE PRO, 10-12KW of commercial 1 or 3 phase power that will run all day and all night because it's designed to, added benefit you can weld and repair shit with it, it's portable, and you're friends can use it if you have power and they dont,, ALSO, they charge cell phones ...lol
