Why choose a folding stock?

What are the opinions on folding stocks and reasons for liking them?

I just can't seem to think of a situation where I would require one. Transportation certainly could potentially be easier, but that's about the only time I could see it being beneficial.

There have to be a huge number of underlying reasons people like them, so let's hear them. Thanks for the help.

In a AICS the 2.0 folded makes cleaning easier, the 1.5 you must have remove the cheek piece to clean the weapon, other than that the folders on bolt guns seem to be tacticool and really serve no purpose.

On a Chassis like the AI's it makes cleaning a whole lot easier.If your packing the gun it's less awkward.

AI Chassis 2.0 is easy to clean, store, and transport. I use mine at work and can seat belt it in folded on the passenger side barrel up and deploy it very quickly.

A folding stock makes cleaning and transporting easier.

Or you can just go with a DTA SRS or Covert that are as short or shorter than other rifle systems when their stocks are folded (when running similar length barrels in each system).

Cleaning. Never even thought about that. Brilliant design then. How pissed were the 1.5 customers who purchased the stock only to find they had to remove their cheek rest each go around of cleaning? Thanks for the help.

i have a 1.5. I'm not pissed at all (i knew before i bought it though). Although, its not much of an inconvenience because i don't clean often. Clean the chamber every couple weeks. So, i just get the allen wrench out, 2 seconds, no problem.

I think the major reason is to have the ability to put the rifle in a shorter gun case while still having a long barrel..

I have a 26" barrel and I needed to buy the pelican 1750 and it takes up a ton of room in a small car. The next size down would be able to fit in the trunk of a car. Making transportation much easier.

The number of situations where a folding stock would be nessicary are very very few, it's just the latest fad, if you want a rifle that's shorter, twice as thick and heavier it's for you

Well, it's a REQUIREMENT for (at least) one of the Navy SEAL's new rifles. Going back and forth to the local range? Not such a big deal. Going out into the big bad world? Never know what situation you'll find yourself in.

On a gun with 16" or shorter barrel a gun with folding stock could be concealed under a trench coat or jacket. If you need to get into and out of vehicles with a rifle, the folding stock is extremely useful - especially if you need to fire from said vehicle.

As a civilian they serve almost no purpose but in tactical situations getting short quickly can make a huge difference.

The 1.5/2.0 cleaning issue seems overblown to me. If you have thumbscrews, cheekpiece removal takes about 5 seconds.

The 2.0 is easier to transport folded, but there's also a hinge and a pointed spike sticking out of the left side of the stock.

Personally, I think I prefer the non-folder.

For me it makes traveling much easier and allows my rifle to fit into an assortment of discrete cases. A ratty looking tennis racquet bag draws much less attention than a pelican or tactical looking soft case.

Folders are prohibited here in Oz, and honest to say i've never actually gone 'damn, i wish i could make this rifle more compact.' However the ability to run 26" barrels and still fit it in a regular case would certainly be a selling point.

Just remember, Folders are a combat-inspired invention and unless you intend to really use that rifle in combat, then it's probably going to be superfluous. They're good for moving in and out of vehicles and making the firearm easier to carry and manoeuvre, but at the same time heavier and bulkier, plus adding another action required to deploy the firearm (just something to think about, usually it'd add not even half a second to your drills, but who knows).

I think there's a similar question that could be asked about
thumb-hole stocks and any number of things which have "why not" answers.

Now that I have a folder, I won't buy a tactical rifle without one.

My short barreled action in the 2.0 fits in a custom 32 inch long carry bag. Very handy. That's really the only thing I saw in the shorty. On my 260 with a long barrel and a suppressor I don't take off, it's really easy to store in the safe. As mentioned above on cleaning, I clean at home, and not often, so no issues there.

If you are talking about a LA sure the 2.0 stage is useful, but I can tell you I had the 1.5 on a SA and didn't need the folding feature to remove my bolt for cleaning.

To the OP...I don't think you "need" it per se, but it can be a useful feature if you have a very long barrel. I like the feature, but I don't need it and I seldom would spend the extra money to have a folding stock.

In the combat world the man with the precision rifle is usally the first one to catch a bullet first if he is spotted packing it. If it is a compact folder it fits in a pack and you are just another grunt until it is time to deploy it.
