And reducing the probability of transmission in public was equivalent to reducing the likelihood of covid getting into the home. In my family's case, that worked out very well.

Do you know what happens to masks that are constantly touched, reused and not rated at a micron level to filter such viruses? They will be present on the surface and infection is damn near guaranteed due to load. In the first year you couldn't find masks and if you could they were useless against viruses. Poor fitting, improper care and zero ability to filter down to viral level means useless. It only helped the masses feel better about going out into public.
