More than a few people carry or keep a 22 rimfire for self defense. Many of these folks are using the ubiquitous 22 Long Rifle cartridge. But, I know several people who like to keep a firearm chambered for the more powerful 22 WMR (Winchester Magnum Rimfire) cartridge.

Winchester Ammunition loads a 22 WMR round in the company’s popular PDX1 Defender line. The round uses a 40 grain JHP bullet and is rated at 1295 fps. Depending on what the round is being shot through, velocity could be much lower in practice.

I have got to find this, sounds perfect. Has anyone seen it yet? Tried it?

Velocities in rifle barrels:

I shot from an 18 1/2 inch and 21 inch barrels.

18 Inch 21 inch

Calculated muzzle velocity [calculated velocity at 100 yards ] feet per second

CCI Game Point 40-grain, calculated BC (G-1) = 0.133

2,006 [ 1,486 ] 1,967 [ 1,455 ]

Hornady 45 grain flex-tip, calculated BC (G-1) = 0.120

1,802 [ 1,289 ] 1,815 [ 1,298 ]

Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel, published BC (G-1) = 0.115

1,975 [ 1,395 ] 1,913 [ 1,349 ]

Winchester PDX -1 bonded, estimated BC (G-1) = 0.110

1,989 [ 1.382 ] 1,968 [ 1,367 ]

Right now, due to its greater weight, flex-tip design, and smaller standard deviation for velocity, my preference is the Hornady 45-grain load.

Also, with a 100 yard ('scope) zero for the CCI 40-grain GamePoint in a rifle,
I find that both the CCI and the WInchester .22 WRF (45-grain bullet) loads
are very close to zero at 50 yards, and seemingly fairly accurate--a fair
alternative for small game.
