World Record Shoot

Okay, for the self-proclaimed Facebook challenged:
14.9 SOP
Producer filming it has 39 Emmy awards
NBC is airing it
Official Guiness world record event
U.S. Optics SN-9 (42X)

My long-range shooting background:
U.S.M.C. Scout/Sniper, Navy SEAL Sniper, Navy SEAL Sniper Instructor, DEVGRU Sniper, "other" government agencies.

On screen TV work:
Top Shot (Expert), Top Guns, Sniper: Deadliest Missions, Battleground: Rhino Wars (Team Leader), Deadliest Tech: Spec Ops, etc.

Because this event is getting bigger than I had expected, if there can be any profit to airing this shoot the way it's going, I will be working to help the folks at Operation Hawkeye, which exists to assist the family members of my fallen DEVGRU brothers from Extortion 17.

UPDATE: Now that I see a few comments posted, there are a lot of inner demons, wrongful assumptions and negativity spilling out of some of those posts. It's telling about where those guys' heads are at. I hope things get better for those posters. For everybody else, thanks for your support!

The Hide is supposed to be about man-sized targets, no? Or maybe there could be an HTI thread, which there is not, now.....

It says it capable of 1/2 MOA accuracy at 3000 yards... so that means a target that is 15" X 15" at least and not bigger. For safety sake I would say 36" x 36" would be a reasonable size to call it good.

At what point is something artillery vs. a rifle? That thing is pushing the limits of what one or two men could carry.

And please be candid over how many tries to set up the shot, zeroing shots, how many rounds to get a hit, etc.

This endeavor just doesn't seem complete without the guidance of ELR Researcher, let's get him onboard!

It's a good thing to push the limits on video this way. Especially with something like this rifle after all the hubbub surrounding it. The .5 MOA claims at 3000 yards when it wasn't even shot to 500 yards, was a leap of faith. But overall now that someone is willing to get behind it and not use a string, I say go for it.

But still there should be some parameters that followed, exactly like has been noted.

How many tries... cold bore, work ups, etc.
How many sight in shots during the official attempt
Size of target, .5 MOA like claimed in the article, 1 MOA, a Man-Sized Target. I also believe in the backer board to see what the bullet looks like on impact.

This is really a proof of concept so the details should be open, and not veiled under a cloak of secrecy.

i agree. with any luck they will make it seem completely impossible for any one able to do it
other then the man on the show and that is the only rifle in the world capable.

I sincerely hope you are successful, but for me to think it is some great feat worthy of the awe of breaking a world record is highly subjective. If 4 people own a 14.9 SOP and you have the farthest sub MOA shot, it is a world record for a 14.9 SOP. What is to stop someone from posting a world record for the farthest shot with a 308? 338? 50 BMG or ANY caliber.

If you shot a 3 shot group with a 338 LM, 375 Cheytac or 50 BMG sub MOA at 3 miles I would hang a poster of you on the wall under a big neon sign that flashes "bad ass" but to shoot 3 miles with a 8 foot long bolt gun built for King Kong....

I had to come back to this post just to say: At least these people have the drive and balls to go where no one has gone before and give this a try. They came up with a round and a rifle at their expense to push the envelope. Maybe it's all bullshit, maybe not, but at least they aren't just sitting around shooting some others guys rifle and round combo that's tried and true and bragging about their bug-holes at 100 yards. Give the guy a break and lets see what the fuck happens.

I agree with this. Sounds interesting and will definitely watch. Like some have mentioned, the more details and footage of the process of getting dialed in would be great. I am also wondering what the parameters are.

Some of the shows Craig has been involved with counteract a lot of the dremel gunsmith mouth breather type shows out there so I think stuff like this is good. Not made up for tv soap opera drama and cannons.

The same kind of whining was prevalent then as well. "Impossible" "BS keyboard commando" was the most common reaction. Now its not uncommon to hear guys talk about stretching magnums that far.

It is not that I am trying to be negative about this feat, I am simply trying to get my head around what the big deal is. I did say it was cool but I think the hype of being professionally produced and being on TV is a bit much considering the equipment. It's kinda like some Evil Knievel stunt. I mean, big gun, lots of powder, big bullet means you can shoot really far. Big deal.

I would be far more impressed if it was a 338 Lapua mag hitting sub MOA at 3 miles because that would be an amazing test of skill and equipment and well worthy of a world record. All of us know how difficult that would be and can relate to the skill that would be needed to pull that off. If I was able to pull that off it would be nothing more than dumb luck. If someone had the shooting skill to do that and do it consistently I would have a HUGE amount of respect for that individual and what they accomplished.

I remember seeing some video of guy shoot a Barrett M82 off hand at a 1000 yard target and hitting it first go. That impressed the hell out of me because I own one of them and holding that 35 pound bitch standing up, hell, i'd be lucky to hit a 100 yard target. So that feat was impressive in its own right.

That guy was a tank! I have trouble shooting my 21# 300WM free hand.
I get it about the world record shot. I tend to agree but no matter how powerful the rifle is its amazing someone has the skill to hold a hand held rifle steady enough to hit even a moa target @ 3000yds let alone a human sized one. I know my 2000yd shots under almost ideal conditions was assuredly difficult. Took me a few rnds to get close, & a few more to actually get on the target. Which was a 50% sil. My last three shots hit 2, & missed by a couple inches. I can imagine how small a human sized one looks @ 3000yds. I'm assuming its not a rail mounted weapon.

Have you guys worked out the approximate G7 ballistic coefficient on that bullet?

I personally think, if done in the correct way, it will be very cool to show on mainstream television.

I suppose, depending on target size, it can still be considered a "sniper" shot. The "rifle" however reminds me of the equivalent midieval crossbow implacement mounted on castles. I'm sure it's capable of greater accuracy/precision than artillery, but practicality? Of course, practicality doesn't always jive with America

Critics aside, I don't think there's a guy on this site who wouldn't want to have the chance to pull the trigger on that gun a couple of times! Part of the bellyaching probably stems from the fact that such an item is out of reach for most (if not all) of us. I also get what some people are saying: when does a "gun" become "artillery"? What defines the standards for measuring a record? etc.

But, with that said, I think you're doing something interesting and cool, and I love to see people push the limits into new territory. And, anything that brings shooting into the public eye in a not-negative way is a good thing.

Wow. So many critics, so many crystal balls...

I would really love to see this done, for real, no matter what the restrictions or circumstances. All stretches of the envelope have consequences, critics, naysayers, and folks who couldn't do the same if their lives depended on it making all sorts of asshat commentary. The Grabbists will obviously have their heyday, and the pros and cons aren't going to be switching any sides at this late date. Let them do what they always do, a lot of folks could probably lip sync their commentary blindfolded. With luck folks will get just that little bit more fed up with their broken record hypocrisy.

If it were me, I'd record the entire process, getting on target, doping the wind, anything else involved, so the Grabbists can't extoll about how threatened we all are by something that may well be nigh impossible to repeat, no matter the means. If the mouth breathers ask who else could do it, the reply could be as simple as "As of today, nobody".

I say go for it and let the chips fall unhindered. I hope you make it, and will think no less if the goal remains standing. Funny thing about goals. Once set, they get met, somehow, some way, some day. I hope it's Sawman doing the driving the day it happens; at least he has the chops to bet on hisself in fronna gawd n' everboddy.
