Yet another action thread.....

So with all the attention customs actions are getting lately why not start a new thread about what would be the end all be all M700 foot print action.

Seems like every custom action maker is making the perfect M700. I want the best of everything on the market but all in one action..

I want an action that fits in a M700 footprint stock. I want it to reliably run from AW or AICS mags. I want an integrated recoil lug with full length tenon threads. All this has been done.

Now for the fun parts.

I want dowelled scope rails angled in MILs. MIL/MIL is a better optics system why can't our scope rails match too?

I want a shroud mounted safety that blocks the firing pin like the M70 or AW.

I want a 60* bolt throw with a floating bolt. (Think Savage meets Ar15) the general consensus is the bolt lift would be too high with only 60* of travel. I'm thinking a larger bolt diameter of say .730-.750 would help along with dual cocking ramps (Ruger seems to have pulled that off). I also want the bolt handle and body made from one piece.

I want to use Remmy pattern triggers. Any of them.

I don't want this new action too tight. It's destined for the field, there's no need for tight benchrest clearances (notice I said clearances not tolerances?)

And lastly I don't want any manufacturer telling me everything is nice and true. I want data. I want to know exactly how much the lug abutments, bolt raceway, tenon threads, and receiver face run out. Same for the bolt body and bolt. And don't tell me there is no runout, I started my career in the tool and die trade at the ripe old age of 17 over 20yrs ago. There's always runout.

So did I miss anything?

Who cares what the scope rail angle is measured in??????

It is what it is, and the only reason to use ANY measurement is to know if X rail is more or less angled than Y rail.

care to elaborate? all kidding aside, is there any special reaming process? does it involve an extra deep throat? maybe a special treatment to extend barrel life while shooting really hot loads?

Every custom tactical action is basicly a trued remmington. Some have integral lugs and rails, others have different mag cuts or extractors. But they all are 90* bolt throw, 2 lug action that has the safety designed into the trigger.

The general consensus is the AW is the king of tactical rifles. There's good reason for that. With the AW you're stuck with a chassis that some like and some hate.

The Remmingtn pattern action has an awesome aftermarket for stocks, triggers, and bottom metal.

The action I'm proposing capitlizes on the strong remmington aftermarket and throws in the most wanted features of the AW. It also adds a floating bolt for ease of bolt face diameter changes should the user decide to go from a standard cartridge to a short mag or maybe a small bolt face cartridge.


And for the poster that mentioned the rails with MIL slope here's why: lets say you've got a mil/mil scope with 30 mils of Internal adjustment (15 up and 15 down). You aslo have a cartridge that needs 20 mils to reach the ELR ranges you'd like to shoot. It's easy math to decide you'd want a 10 mil sloped base to be able to dial the full 20 mils and still have possibly 5 mils left in your scope below your zero and above the 20 mils you need to be able to dial for ELR.

60 degree bolt throw that isn't overly heavy, a shroud mounted 3 position safety that locks the firing pin, and a floating bolt.

Remington's are 90 degree bolt throw and the safety blocks only the sear not the firing pin. Unless you fit an aftermarket shroud mounted safety.

Diminished returns. I am less about features and more about proven mechanics that function properly when they are expected to-Ie. more things that do not malfunction or break over time.

From an industrial design standpoint, features used to sell stuff. Now, it's reliability and branding that ultimately move a customer to that moment of truth. And in the end, we are all just customers of some product or service.....

On the flip side, technology and innovation drive commerce now so the game will constantly change, which I believe will lead to more choice for the consumer. Look at all the chassis options that have come to market over the last 5 years. The action of the future will most likely be printed in some super hardened composite and look nothing like the old R700. It's a brave new world.

All my rails are already mils.
My 0 MOA rail is 0 Mils and my 20 MOA rail is 5.8 Mils.

Since this is a one time calculation, I don't see what you gain by making the rail 5.55 mil versus 20 MOA. Are you talking about offering a LOT of rail slant options. Like I can get a 6 mil versus a 5 mil base?

If this action were to come to life I'd like to see a choice of rail slopes so the end user could match the rail to their optic and cartridge combination. I would think 0, 6, 8, 10, & 12 mil slopes would cover most everyone's wants/needs.
