When your rifle shoots like shit and you have to ruin your BAT action threads to remove your Rock barrel.
My Inlaws live in Fairbanks -- can you pm me on the hacksmiths as well as your referred smiths? I am going to keep a couple of rifles up there and would like to get some work done?

You show up at his shop to pick up your rifle and its empty, closed. No forwarding address. Nowhere to be found.
A buddy of mine found out what a bad gunsmith was when he fired his new gun and it blew the clip bottom out and the escaping burned his face and eyes. The barrel had a little more than 1/8" gap between the bolt and barrel. The first few rounds he fired came out with a belt and he did not notice this because he was looking at the primers to see it it had any pressure. The pressure was fine it was the gunsmith that was unbelievably stupid to pull a stunt like that.
Wow, this thread is terrifying. Maybe there should be a list of questionable businesses so that others know who to look out for.
When you have a bad chamber job on a Savage prefit, send it back to the maker to have them tell you it isn't even one of there barrels and proceeds to call the gunsmith and bitch them out. Then the gunsmith calls and tells you he accidently used a barrel that retails for about 200 less. Many months later you get an email telling you that your Savage action was torn in half while truing it on his lathe. A replacement Savage action is found by the smith which doesn't fit the chassis rendering the internal box mag worthless. After more than a year the rifle is finally together and working. Curiosity to why the bolt body was painted black without my request led me to the Savage serial number search. Low and behold my replacement Savage action is a Stevens 200...NEVER AGAIN!!! Luckily the original prefit had a bad chamber, otherwise I would have been screwed over even worse.
Asked for a stainless thread protector for my heavy barrel AR, contoured for a seamless mating with a re-crown.
Work order written up that way.
Went to pick up the barrel (a month later).... HA.... knurled texture aluminum, no re-crown, barrel is about a half mil longer than the thread protector....
Another month later, it comes back right... other than the burrs on the re-crown at the end of the rifling.
I ended up smoothing the burrs with a brass screw & some lapping compound.
It shoots better, but still like crap. but hey... it shoots good enough for coyote & wild hog.
Work order written up that way.

The smith offers to send you money for replacement parts......2 years ago I sent a smith a contender barrel and a liner to have a 25 acp barrel made, long story short barrel and liner are lost and I get to find new parts.

Mid December a guy phones and gets a quote on having his action drilled and scope fitted. Aparrently he decided it's too expensive...
1'st of January he phones and arrives at the shop with stitches all around his right eye... Not just a nick, all around his eye stitched up and gun in hand.
He apparently decided it can't be such a big job and proceded to what looks like the following:
He tried to drill the action with hand held drill, a few times and a few places, like where the drillbit broke off in one of the holes and he decided to just move the holes.
Tried to tap the holes, and broke off 2 taps in two holes and moved those holes as well.
When he ran out of realeastate on the acttion and still not have tapped holes, he decided that modern chemistry will be the answer in the form of epidermic Epoxy.
With scope mounts glued to his 30-06, off to the range...
I guess I don't have to explain the stitches around his eye..?

Send you Bnib 586 in for an action job. Comes back with a double action pull so light it will not pop a federal primer. When I asked the guy about it, he says well after its left my shop I cant warranty the work because i don't know what you might have done to it....And the asshole has a national reputation..

He's not bad at gunsmithing, just organization. Once he finally found it, his work was good (after 17 months total), though I ended up reworking the action myself as I'm a certifiable perfectionist.

Dug this stock outta the junk pile for the pic. You know you have a bad gunsmith when he tells you he touched up the bedding on your rifle but when you get it back you notice the inlet on the bottom metal is all cut to hell and back due to him bedding it cock eyed and the trigger rubbing
One guy I knew had a new barrel with a comp installed in his 1911. Got the pistol back and during test firing the first round, shit hit the fan and almost took the comp off.
He didn't know what happened and send the barrel and the comp to me to look at for him. I told him that it is customary to line ream the comp to size after installing it
He then was pissed to hell and confronted the gunsmith about it. He replyed that I didn't know you wanted me to do that too and it would be an extra 120 bucks................
