Rifle Scopes YT video about turret test/abuse

Lets say you have a scope with 3m elevation adjustment at 100m. This gives you an angle of about 1.7° from top to bottom.
I don't know how long the typical erector system is but lets just say 200mm. In that case the erector would be moved about 6mm in height, from top to bottom. (Edit: That is a very simple calculation leaving out many factors, so nothing more than an a approximation. For a 150mm erector it would be 4,5mm of total travel)

Obviously you move the erector back and forth, enough to heat it up. Then toss it in like a rivet.

At least according to the OP.

But just heat it up a little. How much? I don’t know, but a little. Maybe it’ll work. But maybe it won’t. I definitely don’t know. But I definitely think it might could.

The lowest temperature that will affect hardening is the temperature at which the steel was annealed.
For a simple carbon steel that will be about 200 degrees Celsius. Other types of steel it is above 500 degrees Celsius.

You would burn your fingers off before any damage was done to a spring.

That's not even close to being correct. Maybe you're confusing tempering with annealing.

And wtf is simple carbon steel? What's the carbon content of that.

What steel has an annealing temperature of 200 C? LOL
 
Holy crap this was funny. Even better is that the spring is housed inside of an aluminum housing. The aluminum would dissipate any heat generated faster than it is produced. The spring will get hotter sitting in the sun on the firing line than it ever would from being used.

As always I miss all the fun.

For the record, I am very friendly with Cyclops Joe. He is a good dude and definitely has a way with words.

His high speed turret twister thing (aka nipple twister) does not do anything adverse to the springs or the turrets of decent scopes. It does break the turret in a little bit, so it probably makes the clicks a bit more consistent.

Do keep in mind that Joe originally spent a lot of time with really crappy scopes where the turret can come off, so for those it is a biit of a stress test. However, once you move up in price a little bit, it is nothing more than break in.
