The 3:00 a.m. call

- a short story set in the near future...

--------

The White House
October 17, 2021 3:00 a.m.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff have just concluded an emergency teleconference to discuss reports that Communist Chinese forces have invaded Taiwan. At the same time, five of the U.S. Space Command's key military spy satellites have been destroyed, leaving U.S. forces virtually blind to activities both on the ground and in the air in East Asia. There are also unconfirmed reports that tactical nuclear weapons have likely been used to destroy critical Taiwanese naval facilities and air bases. Casualties are unknown. Status of Taiwanese military forces are also unknown as virtually all communications with the island have been cut off. Only garbled shortwave radio transmissions are getting out.

The Secretary of Defense has the responsibility of waking the President and providing him with a hastily prepared situation report.

The President tells Defense Secretary Austin to meet him in the Oval Office. Shutters are closed and curtains are drawn over the windows. The Secretary of State and heads of the CIA and DIA join them shortly.

Secretary Austin speaks first: “Mr. President, you will notice in the report that we have determined that our force structure would normally allow us a number of methods of responding to this action by the CCP. However, our lack of satellite intel confines our effective response to a limited nuclear strike against those strategic military targets on the Chinese mainland that we know, with a high degree of certainty, would be used to stage and support an attack on Taiwan. The consensus is that we should not launch this strike before we have made an attempt to communicate directly with Chairman Xi. Of course, any delay in putting our response in motion greatly reduces our chances of resolving this crisis to our benefit.”

Austin pauses for a moment, takes a deep breath, then asks: “What is your order, Mr. President?”

Biden, after a lengthy pause of his own, squinting at the papers before him, slowly looks up and says:

“Guys, this menu makes no goddamn sense to me at all. Just get me a Big Mac... with cheese... a-a-and a little cup of that soft-serve ice cream, too. Yeah, that's my order.”

THE END

LE Wilson Overrated?

I recently got a LE Wilson seating die alone with the K&M Precision arbor press, all direct from LE Wilson's website.

My results this weekend have been disappointing.

Worked up 4 different loads all in Winchester brass full length sized in just a standard Lee full length sizing die, all trimmed to within a thousandth of 2.005". Using three different bullets - Hornady Match 168gr, Sierra Tipped MatchKing 168gr, and Barnes TSX 168gr.

The issue I'm having is that the bullet seating depths just aren't consistent. I was hoping for a reliable +/- 0.001" each time, but I'm getting something on the order of -0.002 to +0.005. I'm setting the first round to OAL 2.800" and then using a Hornady bullet comparator after that. I used the VLD seating stem for the first three batches yesterday. Today I tried using the standard seating stem which seemed less consistent.

With my Lee bullet seater in my Lee Breechlock Challenger press I can reliably get +/- 0.002 at the absolute worst, though I do sometimes have to thread it in a bit as the case gets full. Though I'm not really hearing any crunch until the last load which is 45.5gr Varget with the Hornady and Sierra bullets.

Maybe I shouldn't be so particular about the seating depth, but after weighing out the charges to +/- 0.02gr I'd like to be as consistent as possible with the other things I can control.

Ammo Crapshoot

I know a few people on this forum have said this before, but I saw firsthand what a crapshoot rimfire ammo can be.

I scored a brick of Center X this week and was excited to go see how awesome it would be in my Vudoo. I’ve shot Center X in it before with amazing results. Well, this lot kind of sucks. Averaged .625” for 16 five shot groups. Bad enough that I was questioning my gun and myself. So I shot four more 5-shot groups from my Supergrade. Same results, .75” groups at 50yd.

So I then started thinking it’s me that sucks. Switched ammo in the Kidd to Eley Team and shot several groups in the .3’s and .4’s, basically enlarged holes. Same when I ran some Pistol King and SK Std+ in the Vudoo—.2’s and .3’s.

Then I tried something with unexpected results. The Std+ that shoots one-holers in the Vudoo barely stayed inside an inch in the Supergrade. I thought that was weird. Either ammo is good or it isn’t, right? But good in the Vudoo isn’t necessarily good in the Kidd. Then I turn around and shoot a couple half inch groups from the Kidd using Mini Mags! JFC.

I guess that’s what makes these guns so fun. Or frustrating…

Maggie’s The confusing world of female eye brows, makeup and yoga pants in the professional workplace.

I live on the Mexican border, so the majority of people around are of some relation to Mexico, probably 60-80% don't care never looked it up.

About half of the women (of any age) shave their eye brows off and paint some other shit in. Mostly looks like ass.

The other half put make up in their eyebrows to make them look bushier.

Because of Rona and face masks every chick I know Mexican, White, Black whatever has eye make up caked on. If you came to the El Paso area you'd see more smoky eyes than a one of those trash tv shows like the "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills".

Is this a local thing?

Some of the more ghetto chicks have eye brows that look like a fucking Nike swoop.

The only woman I know not wearing make up is my wife and a couple of her friends.

The wife swears that everyone is now doing this shit.

Also Yoga pants, we have chicks in professional environments now here in El Paso and Las Cruces with some type of pant that has buttons and a zipper but is basically painted on like yoga pants. I hope this is a national phenomenon because everyone needs to get in on this action. Though locally we have a lot of fatties, so maybe it's not for everyone.

Something I have noticed on Fort Bliss is that dependas (fat ugly ones) are wearing pajamas at the PX and commissary. I have never seen this out in town, thank God! But we have two colleges here, and our local quality is pretty good NMSU and UTEP.

Something I just realized with the whole Afghanistan disaster

Its been reported that not even our allies knew we were just going to go out for milk in the middle of the night and bail. It's obvious there was no plan outside of GTFO as fast as possible even though there was basically zero reason to; its not like 20 armor divisions were 2 days away and heading towards us or whatever. No reason to go, but we left with the chaos infused panic only seen by meth heads who are warned 2 minutes before the cops show up to arrest them.

On the flip side of this, no one has mentioned, or noticed, just how many Taliban showed up, in force, at basically the exact bases we had just abandoned. This wasn't just a few hundred of them or some random platoon that realized, hey, something is different here. It was an organized army across all fronts that knew where to go, when it was safe to move in further and then had a plan of what to cut off from where; thus causing the fallout we are seeing of 10's of thousands of US and allies basically left behind.

You can't tell me that they can mass that big of a force let alone do anything that didn't resemble a human wave zerg rush against these areas and installations in ~2 days. If they could, why hadn't they ever before done anything even 25% of the size of this?

No fucking way. There's something else to this.

Oh and P.S. - this also proves that basically fucking everyone over there is in some way Taliban/terrorist. They just weren't wearing uniforms and shooting at you at the time leadership deemed them 'the good guys' we had to win over.

We are our own worst enemy. I’m tired...

So, out of all the comments on the news ATF proposed changes for what constitutes a firearm, most of the 290k comments were from antigun groups. That’s freaking sad. It should have been in the millions to begin with but it looks like to me we are going to lose our rights without even a whimper. Pathetically sad really. If we can’t even mount up enough support to make some comments then we sure as hell don’t stand a chance for when they really do decide to come and get them. I hope I’m proven wrong but...we are our own worst enemy.

Suppressors How do you carry/track you paperwork to the range or out shooting?

I have a few suppressors that serve on several guns. I've caught myself at the range once or twice without the right paperwork (fortunately not busted). Do you just put a copy of everything in your bag/pack so you are always covered? Taped under your pack? In your pocket?

There must be an easy way. I'm paranoid it will end stupidly one day while I am out trying to have fun.

Thanks, LT

So they got some of our weapons, but how long can they feed them?

As the title ask.....So they got some of our weapons, but how long can they feed them?

My guess would be for a pretty long time as I am sure they probably have shipping containers with pallet loads.

I believe the upper escalon of the US military knew this would happen at worst or should have at best.

I would say some heads should roll, but we all know all there will be is some finger pointing, committees to find what went wrong, and some congressional hearings so politicians can get on CSPAN and act like they give a fuck, but in the end not a single person will be held accountable.
