Congrats to Travis on his 3 shot impact at 5280 yards on a 1 moa target! No warm ups or practice shots either. Cold bore shot was .2 mil high and 1.0 mil right. Second round hit at the base of the target. Third was money! Caliber was 33xc, 32" benchmark barrel by Travis at TS Customs (different Travis) shooting a 300gr Berger at 3190. Congratulations again brother on some incredible shooting!

With my new job (technically I work for a major hospital system) and underlying health I went and got my jab--wanted the J&J (the viral not the mRNA) but as with everything gov related, the site said available, and it wasn't. Hi all - I use a redding competition seating die to seat 300 grain 338 lapua rounds. While seating, somehow one of the cases plus the bullet is stuck inside the die. Can someone help me with some guidance on how to take the stuck round out? And also, not sure what I did wrong… thanks for your help

1) Many more ammunition manufacturers I'd never heard of: Sterling, Igman (prolific now), Cascade, Mesko, Sumbro(X-force from Macedonia), Belom, Century, ZSR , Fetter, BPS, MaxxTech.

Seems like quite of few of these manufacturers are in the former Yugoslavia. I've never purchased any of these because frankly, the quality of production scares me just based off where these rounds are manufactured. They may well be fine for training purposes. It's actually quite fascinating to discover these things. Things I don't normally think of such as "I wonder who's making ammo for Macedonia."

2) The bigger suppliers such as Outdoor Limited, Target Sports USA, Ables, Grafs, Lucky Gunner, seemed to be almost continually out of stock whilst smaller, previously lower profile online stores seem to be 'in-stock.'

3) Fortunately, the supply line is back up. I've noticed 380 ACP has gone from $800-$1100 / 1000 rds to about $450-$500 / 1000 rds. 9mm is down to $0.34/rd and 5.56 can now be found for about $0.45/rd. Hopefully by end of year things will continue moving southwards in the $$ department.

I have built a number of long barrel, long range elk rifles, 300 WM, 300 PRC, and 300 NM with 26 to 28 inch barrels. All successful. Goal for next build is shorter barrel, suppressed, lighter weight rifle for big elk (850 pounds) inside 300 yards.

I plan to rebarrel an Origin short action or an Impact short or long action, all magnum bolt heads except for one Impact LA with a Lapua bolt head.

Goal is 20 to 22 inch barrel plus suppressor.

I prefer Proof barrels and heavy for caliber Barnes bullets, 168’s in 7 mm, 200’s in .308.

My first thought is 7 SAUM with a 22 inch barrel but I need high SD more than high BC inside 300 yards.

Next thought is one of the .308 magnums but that puts me in the long action and more weight. I do not currently load for the 300 WSM and I suspect the WSM is not ideal for long, heavy bullets The short barrel does defeat the idea of one of the magnums but inside 300 yards that’s probably not a problem. The 308 Win is enough gun for elk inside 300 yards, but these are really big elk and more is better.

22 inch 300 PRC maybe? The 7 SAUM is still an option.

Read between the lines. (cough, cough)

So picked up a shotgun a few weeks ago.. but it had a Pachmeyr recoil pad on it. And a rubber pachmeyr on a nice English Double is an abomination. Plus the LOP was about an inch too long for me. And so I needed to cut back... and get it to a nice fit.

With that in mind, set out to fit a nice Horn buttplate to it. Which is easier said than done But for those who have never fitted a horn plate to a vintage rifle or shotgun... here's a few tips....



Here's the start... a nasty Pachmeyer and a hunk of Cape Buffalo horn. That should turn into a fitted buttplate by the end of the day, river don't rise.



Here's the rear of the stock and I plan to use the same/original holes. So first task is to mark them on the piece of horn. I took the screws from the Pachmeyer (Philips, no less) and cut them off and pointed them in the lathe. Then screwed them into the stock to make transfer punches.



Then with a piece of tape on the horn, laid it in place It's way oversized) and tapped it to locate my holes.



Now can drill a pair of guide holes that will be exactly on and let me drill for my machine screws.



Now I know that any further holes I drill will be in perfect alignment with the rest of the stock. I actually then drilled the holes out a bit oversized, because the new large-headed screws for the horn plate are a bigger diameter. So drilled the holes to .157" the minor diameter of the screws.



Here are the new (proper) screws and a screwdriver that I made to fit the .020" slots. This is hollow ground and a perfect fit for the slots. So will cause NO damage installing. Using 'carpenters wood' screwdrivers for a gun is a crime like fitting a Pachmeyer.



Modifying the screw to exactly fit the hole and countersink drilled into the horn buttplate. Once it's fitted, the shaping can begin.



Screws precisely fitted to the raw horn buttplate. Note some delamination around the top screw head. There turns out to be a flaw in the piece of horn. But it's not structural and adds some character. Horn is a neat material to work with. Polished, it has depth like a gem!


Because I didn't want to be constantly taking the screws in and out of the butt (that would mess up the threads), I made these pins just for locating the buttplate exactly while shaping, sanding and polishing. From here, it was scribed.




Here is the buttplate in place with the brass studs holding the buttplate in place. Now shaping can begin.

I have a new 30-06 barrel that I bought cheap when I had a LA 30-06 bolt face ARC Nucleus. I had plans to build a short barreled (can) hunting rifle in 30-06.

I ended up selling off all my actions a few months ago when I got a job in Germany. Covid killed the job off, so I am back to buying guns again.

The barrel is new, I think it is a Bartlein or Shilen, I don't remember.

Anyway I have a new Zermatt TL3 that is a magnum bolt face, and it wants to be a gun.

Can the 30-06 barrel be rechambered easily for either 300 PRC or 300 Win.

Looks like the 300 PRC is .17 longer at the neck junction. Is that long enough to clean up the chamber?
