im meaning "return" in this case with RTZ in reference to the optic alone

but in a rifle system, both returning and retaining carry equal weight...returning to zero can be a test of the optic itself...

retaining zero requires the mounts and rifle to not throw a wrench into things...mounts cant shift on rails, rails cant loosen/shift (if not integral), rifle cant shift in stock/chassis...none of those are the fault of the optic

you can test optic tracking and return to zero on a jig completely separate from the rifle...retaining is a test of the whole system

on a really well mated rifle system you can take anything that indexes apart and put it back to together and the zero will still be good...

Any reason TOF above 10s gives no solution? No such limit on previous version. I get that shots with such long TOF is largely irrelevant, but I do have a range where stupid long shots are taken for shits and giggles sometimes, and I liked that feature on the last version

I’m running a Geissele High Speed NM trigger in my MARS-H.
I have a SSAE-X in a MARS-L. It’s close enough to the NM that going forward I will be using SSAE-X in any other guns.

I have a pre-1963 slick side chromed bolt carrier in my Colt 605A clone. Nothing wrong with it at all. In fact, it’s probably built better than most after-market bolt carriers due to tri-bore tolerances.

Bolts are what wear out, along with cam pins, gas rings, springs, barrels, etc.

I would look at the top-level shooters in the courses you’ve attended, find out who has the least problems and best performance, and go in that direction.

I’m not sure if a Ballistic Advantage barrel will be in that equation. Not knocking them, but just seems the most important component will be from another barrel maker.

You have to decide if you’re going with a standard carrier and gas system, or something with tunable features to handle suppressed vs unsuppressed.

For me, I use Bootleg carriers. Very easy to adjust between naked and suppressed with them with just a flat head through the ejection port.

If I was going the route you are headed, I would do either the Bootleg or Rifle Speed for a tunable system, or for a basic BCG, go with a BCM or something that passes Mil-Std materials and dimensional checks.

My background is that I’ve been chasing the DM thing since the mid-1990s, but I’ve moved onto 6.5 Grendel and feel like 5.56 just tickles the targets now, at least out here in the West. Out East, with tree lines baffling the wind, you can get more audible hits on steel. Out here, 400yds is barely audible a lot of the time, plus no real ground effect from the bullet splash.

For what it's worth, I have two other guns (1 rem700 one howa) with light triggers (rems a triggertech 1lbs/howas a 3oz jard) and they both override the sear if I run the bolt hard and fast like you see these dudes at the matches where they use bolt action rifles in a uspsa fashion.
Though for ALL my rifles, if I need to check something with a loaded round, I make one up without a primer. Once that passes all the tests I want, I replicate that with the full component list. I witnessed some AD's at matches some years ago and have never forgotten them. I simply dont trust ANY bolt, sear, or safety with a live round in my house. It's a risk vs reward thing with me. You can't unring a bell. If I were to have an AD in my house, it wouldn't be worth the info I was seeking when running those tests. The ONLY time a live round gets sent home in my chamber, is if I'm deploying, or on the bench at the range doing load development. Period. (which seems like another full time job, and it's getting old.)
