Recap of the URSA NorCal Mar '25 event

Apr 3, 2025 - Recap of the URSA NorCal March ‘25 event (by RD, Lynn Dragoman; build info and notes from Oscar)

Shooters, we had a break in the weather so we held 3 matches on Saturday March 29th. We want as many shooters as possible at the 3K Match in April so this was a golden opportunity and we took it

Conditions were cold to the point I had on several jackets and wrapped myself in a moving blanket. Amanda had a Mr Buddy heater running and my fingers were numb. Officer S stopped by to see how we have been as the rain and snow has canceled our last few matches.

Match 1 started off with Doug taking the win over Amanda.

Match 2 had me taking the win in a shoot-off against Amanda.

Match 3 had Amanda taking the win against Doug in another shoot-off but at 2600 yards!!!

Amanda and Doug are both shooting chassis made out of micarta and both guns are shooting well. I will post a picture of I can

Calshipbuilder was shooting a 308 Winchester and actually did well at 2147 yards. He had yet to qualify for the April 3K match so I sat out of match 3 and let him shoot my 375 CheyTac in my place. His first 7 shots behind the gun produced 5 hits at 2147 yards and a spot in the upcoming 3K Match. He ran out of ammo and finished the match with his 308 Winchester.

A big congratulations to Doug and Amanda on 2 wins and a great job by Calshipbuilder for qualifying for the 3K.

Jim R had 4 hits several times and I am confident we can get in another match if the weather allows and get him qualified as well.

Notice how bundled up the shooters are in the pictures (see Gallery).

Match 1 Winner (and Runner-Up in Match 3), Doug (RickyRacer87), was shooting 299 gr. (David Tubb) DTAC’s (with nose ring) out of his Billy Goat Machine-built 33XC with Defiance Machine Deviant Tactical action w/ 30 MOA integrated rail, 32” Schneider barrel, Accuracy Solutions’ “Baby Orca” chassis w/ BipodeXt bipod extender, and Nightforce 7-35x56 ATACR scope on ERATAC 0-70 MOA base and rings.

Match 2 Winner, Lynn, was shooting 390 gr Hornady A-tips out of his Billy Goat Machine-built.375 CT with Stiller 1.600 TAC DRIVER action, Lothar-Walther 36” barrel, McMillan HBR stock w/ tracking rails and barrel block, March 5-42x56 High Master wide-angle scope and Burris rings w/ 40 MOA inserts on a Mirage ULR 70 MOA rail.

Match 3 Winner (and Runner-Up in both Match 1 and 2), Amanda, was shooting 300 gr. Hornady A-Tips out of her Savage 110 action, Ketchum-build .338 LM Improved (40 degree) with 33” Bartlein barrel, Accuracy Solutions’ “Baby Orca” chassis w/ BipodeXt bipod extender, and Nightforce 7-35x56 ATACR scope on ERATAC 0-70 MOA base and rings on the 30 MOA rail.

Calshibuilder was shooting Lynn’s .375 CT for his 3K qual (see specs above).

SOLD ***SOLD***Chris Reeve Small Inkosi ($285 shipped)

I have an excellent condition CRK PJ Small Inkosi with S35VN Drop Point blade. Just received this back from the mothership where it received a spa treatment (sharpening/re-blast) as well as a re-issued birthday card.

Excellent CRK smooth action with minimal signs of wear. The blue thumb studs are slightly worn off and there is a slight scuff on the blade I captured in the pic. Blade is obviously factory sharp now and has not been used to cut or carried since receiving it back from CRK.

Comes as pictured with re-issued card/box and sticker.

6mm ARC Gas Gun Barrel Lengths and Muzzle Velocities

I'd like to know what muzzle velocities are actually being achieved by "Hide" members for their pet handloads that are tipped with Hornady 103-grain ELD-X bullets and fired from 6mm ARC gas guns having either an 18" or 20" barrel length. I'd also to know what the preferred choice of powder is for those handloads.

Thanks in advance for your input in response to my inquiry.

KESTREL BALLISTICS & HORNADY® JOIN FORCES TO LAUNCH NEW BALLISTICS WEATHER METER WITH 4DOF® SOLVER

New advanced handheld meter for long-range hunters and shooters offers next-level accuracy for first-round hits at extended ranges

BOOTHWYN, PA – April 23, 2019 Kestrel Ballistics, the leading brand in rugged American-built weather meters and long-range shooting accessories, has partnered with Hornady, premier manufacturer of bullets, ammunition, reloading tools and more, to launch an all-new advanced ballistics weather meter for hunters and shooters. The Kestrel 5700 Ballistics Weather Meter with Hornady 4DOF will debut at the 2019 NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits in Indianapolis and be available to pre-order online. Visit the Hornady booth #5251 on Friday, April 25 at 12PM EDT to witness the unveiling of the all-new Kestrel 5700 with 4DOF ($499) and learn about how this unit can help shooters achieve first-round hits at nearly any distance.

Combining reliable onsite environmental measurements with precise Hornady 4DOF trajectory solutions – this all-in-one, compact unit is fully functional as a complete, durable tool for long-range precision shooting. The integrated Hornady 4DOF Ballistic engine provides trajectory solutions based on projectile Drag Coefficient along with the exact physical modeling of the projectile and its mass and aerodynamic properties. Coupled with features like zero angle and aerodynamic jump calculation it is ideal for long-range calculations. Leave the phone behind, and forget about apps – now hunters and shooters can focus on the shot, without the distraction of fumbling with a phone in the field. Accounting for all environmental and ballistic variables that affects bullet trajectory over distance, the Kestrel with integrated 4DOF solver quickly and accurately delivers dead-on aiming solutions for any rifle or round. Stop by the Kestrel Ballistics booth #3464 at the NRA exhibition to see demos of the unit.

  • Accurate Environmentals – Measures wind speed and direction, temperature, altitude, and more
  • G1/G7 Ballistics Solver– Large library of independently tested bullet data
  • User-Friendly– Easy operation for outdoor use with large buttons for navigating screens and entering information along with bright, clear backlit display readable in direct sunlight or low light situations
  • Rugged, All-Weather Durability-- IP-67 Waterproof, MIL-STD-810 drop-tested, and backed by a 5-Year Warranty
  • Long-lasting Power- Powered by 1 AA Lithium battery, expect hundreds of hours of use from a reliable tool that won’t quit when you need it most
  • Load & Go Convenience – Set up a Gun Profile via the free Kestrel LiNK app, then the Kestrel unit is field-ready allowing users to calculate trajectories under any conditions, even in areas without cellular service

Athlon Cronus 50L-640 Thermal Scope

I'm looking at getting a nice thermal scope. Is the Athlon Cronus 50L-640 thermal a good deal at $3,500. I'm sure the top of the line Pulsar is better but it looks like this Athlon is about as good as the second best Pulsar. The only thing that looks like it isn't quite as good is the field of view for the Athlon is listed at 8.8x6.6. Any opinions?

Sgt of Arms? Still in Business?

I myself like several other people have had countless issues with getting in contact with Sgt of Arms about rifles we ordered. Does anyone have any contact info besides [email protected] or their phone number 817-668-0433? I guess that email and phone number doesn't work since they can't reply to any of my emails or voicemails. It's been over 13 months since I placed my order. I heard on October 3rd that I'd have my rifle in 5-6 weeks. After that didn't happen I heard on February 7th that I would have it in 5-6 weeks again. Obviously that didn't happen again. I've been constantly emailing and calling the last several weeks without any response. I just want an honest update or my money back. I'm so over this company.

MOA comeback?

Recently while viewing Youtube videos on long range shooting, I have been surprised by the number or references made to the use of MOA versus MIL. Then when exploring Fierce Firearms, I learned they typically mount MOA scopes as that is what the largest segment of their customers desire. So I was just curious if I am just imagining this reversal in optic trends or if in fact MOA is making a comeback?
