Just picked up a .308 Galil as a "beater" battle rifle as I can't bring myself to spray paint a SCAR 17 and I know the M1A isn't a realistically good platform even though it's fun. Don't see many threads here on it, I know it's not a precision rifle by any means but has anyone tried to group with one yet?

I don't think of them as a beater rifle at all. I freely admit that I am not an AK guy but the Gen 2 Galil may be the zenith of that platform (ducking as I write that). I have and have shot the 5.56 version of the rifle and it is milspec accurate going between 2 and 1.5 mod depending on ammo and how bad I am on any given day.

I had one for a few years. 16" 308. With my basic 150 SST load that my Savage MSR10 shoots into 1.5 moa, the Galil was an honest 1 moa 5 shot group. The Galil was overall a better gun than the Savage I thought, but it was also worth twice as much so it made more sense to sell at the time for cash. With a KNS piston mine shot really soft. TBH given a choice between it and a SCARH..... Not sure which way I'd go even if they both cost the same. Long term reliability is still unknown, just don't hear much about them.
