16-18 inch shorty rifles

Going from a Rem Varmint contour to the Benchmark Sendero Lite wasn't bad at all. There was a small section about 4" from the lug where the contours didn't match and had to be relieved slightly.

I used two layers of painters tape to protect the carbon, and create clearance. Then with sandpaper between the barrel and the stock I sanded the touch points. No action screws just the weight of the barreled action works great and creates perfect lines between the barrel and forend.

This blank is next:

Gotcha I’ve got whatever the default contour is on my sako 85 which is like between a 2-3 and am moving up to a Wilson carbon wrapped #4

Finally got an AT-X!

I'm getting ready to order a short 16"-17" 308 barrel and I was wondering if I should go with a faster twist for a little more stability with the reduced velocity. I plan on running this suppressed, but not subsonic. I'm leaning towards a 5 groove 9 twist right now.

I spun up a 1:9 krieger on my 16” 308. Stabilizes subs just fine. Play with the Berger stability calculator and make sure it doesn’t over spin or underspin anything you want to run. With the short barrel I doubt you can run much if anything that it would over spin.

Just depends on what bullets you plan on running. I have a 16” 1:11 built specifically to run 125s over 3k. It shoots 155gr Bergers at 2750 into very small groups as well. I think a 1:10 gives you the most flexibility but I’d go 1:9 or even 1:8 if you were planning on running heavies and/or subs at short range.

So someday, I’m going to do a 16.5” .260 REM with suppressor for subs…

Just busy with other stuff right now.

I’m probably crazy. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I havent tried subs and my 16.5” 6.5 manbun is great with 123 Scenars.
Not near book max of h4350 and getting 2840.
Super fun and handy.

Do it!!

Funny, you and all the other old retired guys I know always saying they are busy.
Makes ya wonder how ya had time to work!!

Hahaha! Totally valid observation. 😁

And 123 Scenars at 2800+ makes me wonder if I need to mess with subs. What twist rate? 8:1?

Was a 20” barrel 700 tactical. Cut and threaded to 16.5”. Still shoots well. Thinking it needs a camo paint job nowView attachment 8449250
Simple and effective.

I've been working with one of these too lately. A barrel chop is in the works if the accuracy is there after bedding and trigger replacement.

I recommend bedding it, the block never contacts enough on the hs stocks it's usually a sloppy fit.

This is my favorite thread on SH. I just have to make the jump into building a shorty. Really thinking 6.5PRC for a foray in to the short bolt world. Keep the pics coming fellas, they look great!
This thread sucks! 😄

It’s the reason I’ve been fighting so hard to resist building another fun rifle. My budget’s not made for this.

The wife and kids can eat Ramen especially with inflation and food prices these days. As new age Dave Ramsey would say, life is short, build another rifle!!!

It’s a factory remington barrel. But my 16” remington 700 tactical shoots sub MOA with pretty much anything from 150gr up to 180gr with a 10” twist. Never got my hands on anything heavier. And mostly shot hunting rounds out of it.

What results are you getting? Bullet & speed

Have a 18" 6mmGT on the way
Right now I'm using this barrel for suppressed predator hunting so I'm running the 80 gr ELD-VT... Don't have a reliable chrono at the moment but so far the downrange dope is lining up with 3040-3050 fps with zero pressure signs so it definitely has room to go a bit faster. It shoots great where it's at so I don't think I'm going to push it much harder.

Tried a few 109 Bergers and they shot a little under .5 MOA with Varget. Haven't tried anymore at distance until I can get a Garmin soon.

The latest configuration on the sheep rifle.
18” 6 CM. PVA Osprey Prefit. .750 Taperless Contour that a few of us championed here on the Hide. 39 oz for the barrel and 8 lbs total with the Scythe-Ti.

Can I ask about your decision to go with the HNT 26 over a stock? Was it purely weight? I couldn't take it anymore and am starting my short/hunting build and can't decide between the two. Other than traditional hunting rifles, all of my customs are in chassis and I'm drawn to the HNT26.

Not purely weight. The ergo’s are great for me when shooting long range in field positions, shooting in awkward positions from a tripod and compact size when folded and on a pack while bushwhacking & carrying big loads.

Can you drop the details again?
(I am old and forgot….)

Mine cant be here (24” barrel”) and currently sits at 8 lbs 7 oz with unloaded mag.
No bipod, no can.
I shoot off my pack or tripod.

How do you like that can? Suppress well? Shot it around any others you would compare to or think it’s better or just as good as?

It's really been my go to can for anything under 6.5mm since I bought it way back in 2016, I've run it extensively on .260, 6.5CM, 5.56 18", 16", 14.5", 10.3" and now 6GT & it has done extremely well on all of them. I feel like it's performance for it's size/weight is still pretty damn impressive. I'm no expert but to my ear it's no louder than some full size 30 cal cans (Surefire & my old SAS stainless) & definitely quieter than any of the "K" size cans that I have heard in person. Sure it's probably old technology compared to some of the newer suppressors out there but honestly I haven't felt the need to look around for the "new hotness" since this can still works so well for me.

Nice. I have had a resistor for about 5-6 years and love it but was looking for something shorter and lighter for the 6.5mm calibers I have.

Very cool, I'm on the back order for a folder--and I might've just figured out a reference for a 6Arc build or moving my 18" 6.5cm from the Bravo to the ATX chassis.
Would like to find a second folder used though.

That 18" just clears for a muzzle attachment and suppressor!

Dang, what LOP do you have there?

Not very tacticool but 18” 7PRC dedicated hunting rig. View attachment 8407015
A wonderful looking rifle. Finally a hunting rifle that doesn't look like an appliance dolly. Nothing against chassis for match shooting and the like, but hunting with one just leaves me cold..........
