Hornadys new ELD VT

Why start off on a mediocre foot with a hamstrung cartridge when you can introduce a better version in your new cartridge? Odds are they tried it and due to the COAL limitations the results weren’t much better than the current .223 offerings so they shelved it and introduce the 62gr instead for a much better initial offering.

I personally am looking forward to hammering these out of an 18” .22-250 and an 18” 6.5 Creedmoor.
Have you shot any of these from an 18” 22-250? I’ll be ordering an 8 twist barrel for my 250, but undecided to go 20” or 18”. We can’t run supressors in Canada, but I’ll probably put a brake on it tho just cuz. I’m thinking it’ll be a flame thrower if I go any less than 20”.

I have not yet, haven’t been looking real hard and when I do they are out of stock so I haven’t picked up any yet. I haven’t shot ours without the suppressor yet but since it’s loud with the short suppressors I’m sure it will be quite loud without one.

"Too few samples", yes exactly. I was trying different powders, I have a larger sample size (20 rds) to try with Varget for the next range trip. All are loaded the same as above. I'm hoping the next 20 stay under 1 moa. That would work for my needs. I don’t believe in "flyers" with jacketed bullets.

Just in case this is helpful to someone wondering what powders to try and ball park where to start in the 22Creedmoor… I have already tried N550 and it’s running 3300 from my 20 inch.
I know it’s not exact bullet but at least it’s pressure tested and better than someone’s load off the internet

Travis Stevens has an alpha reamer I bought and traded him last year. If you are going to run the eld vt in .224 they would be way better in a .060 or .080 freebore. I’ve run a lot through my 22 creed with .120 freebore and .030” off lands they are just barely in the neck. Actually had one fall out this weekend shooting Praire dogs and spilled powder all over in my action. But the next day I seated them deeper and am now jumping them almost a hundred thousands and they still shoot really good.

Gotcha! Was curious cuz my buddy was looking for 22gt reamer to buy. But I’m actually waiting on new barrel for my 22-250 and I have some of the 62gr ELD-VT to load up for it.

Have you made another range trip to shoot some more of these? New 1:80 twist barrel of mine be here in couple weeks, really excited to try some out. What’d you use for a starting point on how deep to seat the bullets?

Dang it, I bought a bunch. I developed a fine load out of my 22 Creedmoor. (40.0 grs of Re15.5. 62gr VLD-VT 3,750 fps) For Montana prairie dogs. Showed up at the place I've been shooting them since 2015. The landowner said, "Help yourself, but the plague killed most of them; all us ranchers are tickled over this plague." Anyhow, I did sight one big PD at 343 yards, that 62gr ELD-VT blew him into little pieces

Loaded up some 80 grainers for a suppressed predator load in my 18" 6GT earlier this week, with 32.9 gr of AR-Comp powder they shot extremely well. Probably have another 100-150 fps on the table with more powder charge but I don't know if it's worth chasing more speed when they're shooting like this... May work up a bit higher just to see if there's another sweet spot.

@Ledzep I was curious if you guys have done any testing with the 80s in 6GT yet? Hard to find good load data for bullets on the lighter side especially with shorter barrel lengths.

I can check with the guys Monday. I don't think we've done anything but if there are supplies floating around it should be easy enough to do if I can make time.

Man that would be awesome! I started pretty conservative on the charges since the ELD-VT is long compared to other 80 gr pills, but they definitely hammer. Looking forward to putting some 'yotes down soon hopefully 👍

@Ledzep - Do you have any twist rate info for the 30 cal 174's?? Nothing listed still.

Want to know if my 11.25 twist 18" DPMS will stabilize these.

So far I've tried these in a AR10 8 twist 16" Larue barrel loaded 2.860 oal Lever in virgin MAI (Norma) brass & cci#34's
It was 96 degrees when I shot this and had no pressure signs on that load.
Why the hell is there no load data for Lever in 308?? GRT predicts this load gets complete burn in this 16" barrel, fill % is good, SD is good, top end forgiveness is good. I don't get it, maybe it's less predictable with non mag primers 🤷‍♂️

Next time out I'll back the Lever load down to 2520 fps range & give Vit N540 a try.

These are longer than the 176 A-tips so powder cap is limiting in an AR and why I first tried with Lever, but damn. I am impressed with this bullet.
RL 15.5 would be my first choice but just cant fit enough in there at AR mag length. I'll give Vit N540 a try next.

FYI - These were the blems I was shooting. Have 800 non blems sitting here ready to load.
They hit about .1 mil high at 500y with .289 G7 plugged in Strelok Pro. At 500Y 3.1 mil hit dead nuts. Very impressive bullet here.

I know that was a max or slightly over max load, however I'm still trying to wrap my head around a 16" 308 that stays Supersonic to 1000y with a 170 class bullet.

@357Max Keep us posted, hell if you wanted to put it in the 308 reloading depot or a separate thread so it's concentrated on the 30cal ELD VT i wouldn't be upset at all. I want to switch all my 308s over to the ELD VT with the BC it's advertising. Longer than the 176GR A-TIP is concerning lol but i guess that would make sense with the BC. I have 600ct of 168gr TMKs that I bought for the XM3. Whenever I get around to shooting them up I think I'm going to switch to the 174gr. The hart barrel is 1in10 so I'm not terribly worried there but my LMT is 1in11.25 so I'm curious there as well.

Thinking about it cause I'm mostly stocked with varget for 308. I have an 8lb jug of staball match, that would likely give us the case capacity we need with closer burn rate to varget for 308 semi.

It will be stable (designed to work with 1:12" or faster) but I don't think they'll quite fit at AR-10 magazine length. No problem at all with the 2.950" AICS magazines, and there may be some metal AR-10 mags that will just squeak by but I don't know for sure.

Thanks for the reply. wasn't sure about the 11.25 twist.

I'm using Larue mags that allow 2.860, wouldn't want to stuff these in a P-mag.

Really need to get some loaded for the bolt gun & it's a 10 twist.

These are MAX charges, back down accordingly and use your noodle. Unfortunately for you I don't think we have AR-Comp data gathered yet. It's quite a bit faster burn rate than the stuff our guy tested so I'd err on the side of caution in regards to the velocities below. Faster burn rate will pressure out before getting velocity (typically).

80gr ELD-VT, 6mm GT, 2.54" COAL. Velocities out of a 24" test barrel. This will all get published on our reloading app eventually. It's just a matter of the right people getting unburried from the pile of work they're under.

AA 2520- 38.5 (3450)
Varget- 37.3 (3350)
StaBall Match- 38.5 (3350)

I realize the above is not for the 6 ARC, but I've got a question for you on the 6 ARC / 80 ELD VT load data.

Looking at the 6 ARC Gas Gun tables, TAC is a good powder for speed with the 75 VMAX and 80 GMX. Would this also make it a good powder for speed with the 80 ELD VT? If so, could I use the 80 GMX data as a reasonable starting point and work into it? Kinda hard to find pressure for me with the ARC since it is working at lower pressures. Thanks!

Much appreciated! Will definitely keep an eye out for pressure signs as I work up with the AR Comp... Was just looking for something that had a complete burn in this short barrel. Looks like I may need to revisit a little Varget as well cause the lower charges I tried didn't shoot very well but I was way down in the 35 gr range to be safe

Thanks again!

Do you happen to have some 6.5 Creedmoor Gas or Bolt gun load data to start with for this bullet? I am going to run it out of my 6.5 AR10, the box ammo shot lights out the other day.
