Hornadys new ELD VT

Can anyone confirm minimum recommended twist rate on the 174gr 308?
I caught it verbally during their podcast video, the one about new products for 2024.
He said 1:10 out loud.
Their CS/Tech support folks will answer. I haven't had my hands on any yet so I can't say for certain.

Tech response was pretty quick, confirmed 1:10 recommended.

I may buy a box and try in a 308 with 1:12 barrel and see what the target and true ballistics chrono tells me vs 178eldx which seems to have the highest BC other than the Atip in that weight class. Worst case they become varmint bullets for the 1:9 32 inch 300winmag.

That 174 30 cal might be interesting in PRS TAC division

2.2.3 7.62 NATO/.308 Winchester has a bullet weight cap of 178 grains and muzzlevelocity cannot exceed 2,800 fps (+/- 28 fps for environmental factors and equipmentdiscrepancies).

I guess there is a 30 caliber offering as well... 174 gr.

No details on BC or minimum twist yet. But the Hornady site says it's suitable for varmints 50 lbs and under. And of course match/target.

Can't really say I'm going to plunk down $40+ for a box of 30 cal bullets to blow up coyotes or woodchucks.That's a lot of powder and LR primers to do something that a .224 or 6mm option would do more efficiently.

Might breathe a little extra life into a .308 Win for LR target though.

I'm skeptically cautiously optimistic.😆

1:12" should work fine but you may run into issues if you're at low altitude and low temps (like Alaska in the winter). Most everyone should be fine running 1:12.

I'm Australian mainland, would be very unusual to ever shoot at higher air density than maybe 12 centigrade with some humidity near sea level. If I camped out in the mountains and shot in the morning it could be around freezing but you are talking near a kilometre of elevation. Primary use would be FTR or sporter class shooting 300-900 yards between 15 and 35 Celsius near sea level generally with reasonable humidity, otherwise a bit of pest shooting.

Will ask a favor for perspective, but when you run your internal model, can you also run a Miller just for comparison?

They don't quite make SAAMI, but nothing crazy, you can keep the ogive out of the case at 2.850 I'm pretty sure and if you have 2.950 AICS magazines you'll be in business.

How's the 174gr handle pressure? I was thinking I'd put them in Fury brass and...
Not sure. We've taken them up to ~65,000psi in .300 PRC's without issue, but I can't guess what a bonus 15,000psi would do. I've heard some stories about lead cores and super high pressures not being the best partners.

Just saw the 30cal 174gr, the BC is nuts. Anyone used it on medium game yet? I'll likely be getting rid of my 168gr TMKs in favor of the 174s. Will be perfect for the XM3.

Read this and still not confident on what twist would be optimal. I'm ordering a 18" 22 Creedmoor with the idea of using the new 62s for coyotes.

Options are 7, 7.7 or 8 twist.

8 twist for sure. 8 twist is borderline too fast and the other options you listed are for sure too fast. 9 twist would be great.

I have a buddy that has a 9 twist 22 creed and he cant get them to shoot. Guessing you better get a 1-8 twist.
I am running 18" 1:9 22 cm with the eld vt at 3620 and they work great

I ended up with some 62s. I’m not sure how stable they are in an 8 twist 223. Had one round to errant, and enter 2” left of the group at an angle. The rest of the group was solid ~.8” for the remaining 9 shots. I’ll have to test a little at distance.

I had one errant round on my 10 shot test group, looks like I went off path and entered paper at an angle, 2” off the remaining decent 9 rounds.

What muzzle device?

Gyro should be good. Any bullet in the 4 dof Library you can run the calc and in table view it shows you gyro.

Where are people getting the 62s? I have notifications set up on a few sites (Midway, Brownells, Grafs, etc), but have only got one email from Midway where I was apparently too slow.
Also, has anyone seen any of the VTs for other calibers in the wild? Seems like they're focusing on loaded ammo (which makes sense), with limited 62s slipping out now and then.
 
I just shot a bunch of 62 eld-vt today in 22 cm 20” barrel 8 twist. With varget I Started at 39 and worked up to 42 with no pressure. 39gr was about 3400fps and 42gr was 3678. They were all 3 shots. Shot really good at 39 and even better at 41.5-42. It didn’t shoot worth of shit from 39.5-40.5. The rest were 1/2” or less. The last two shots I took were loaded with 44.5 gr of n555 and were right at 3400fps.
