16-18 inch shorty rifles

I also picked up a T3X ranch in 308. Threw a Swaro 3-9 on top and it's already produced as a hunting rifle. No regrets, this one looks like a keeper.

I would have gotten the Roughtech version, but I am not sure I realized it was available in that contour when I went blued steel/walnut. The biggest benefit is mine has a metric 15x1 barrel thread that needs an adapter, compared to yours which is 5/8x24.

As an out of the box option I think they are hard to beat.

Just in, GCP Rifles, .223W, 1-7.5 Shilen, H Palma in OD, Timney HIT @1lb, ATX short fore end, Leupold MK4HD 4.5-18 PR2/mil, Pierce action. Decided to run the Sandman S on this, not in pic. The bag is a US made Eagle, a gift from the late Ben Lennett.

My 16-18 inch shorties fold to around 28 inch overall length. Need your recommendation for a simple 30 inch bags with inner Molle straps to keep the rifle centered. I have a few 36 and larger bags but I'm looking for something nice and compact.

How about a tennis racket bag with some customized padding?

If you can find an Eagle or similar "M4" drag bag, the Savior 34" would do well. Look at the OAL of other guns, the 34 works great for double duty on carbines, same 16-18" The 30" if you have shorties.

Am I the only one who sees these packs and think they scream "GUN!"

Might be discrete in the trunk or on the back seat, but anyone walking around with anything like this that isn't a guitar case gets an extra look.

And if the guitar case guy or gal is very fit, with muscular arms, they get extra looks as well.

Anyone loading 130gr Barnes in 6.5 Creedmoor with an 18” barrel? If so what kind of velocities are you getting?

Maybe try 123 Scenars and h4350 in a short barrel….. (I was getting 2840 0.5 gr below Hodgdon book max)
And yes, they hammer deer

New 16.5” arrived, will be trying some Hammer bullets in it once broken in.

The 130 Bergers hammer deer too and are great too.

You're right on point IMO. That's why I suggested a tennis racket bag.
I have a guitar hardcase that was purpose built for holding a short rifle and a couple spare mags. I completed the ensemble by going on amazon and getting a pack of vintage rock stickers and I slapped them all over it. Then I let me kids play with the empty case in the yard one afternoon.

I've had cops come to the shop and comment that they play guitar too. Even sitting in a gun shop next to a rifle safe it is so innocuous that police officers think it's not what it is.

Not Barnes but I'm running both 130g Berger OTM and 130g ELDM.
41.5g of H4350: 2650
42.0g of H4350: 2685
42.5g of H4350: 2730

As an additional datapoint, I ran the 130gr OTM through a 18" PVA Rock Creek and got the following 5-shot average velocities across a Magnetospeed:

39.2gr Varget - 2632fps
39.5gr Varget - 2645fps
39.8gr Varget - 2666fps

The guns go into the bags and into my truck then they get taken out at the range or match to shoot. I can and have just tossed the guns right into the truck w/o bags and carry it them from the truck when I get to the range/match. I don't take my shorties into a Starbucks or for a jog so that people can scream "Gun" :) . Actually, living in TX, people are fantastic and do not care when they see a gun bag.

Where do you guys see these people just walking about with their gun in a gun case? Don't they have car/truck/moped to take them places?

Walking into a hotel, getting pulled over with a rifle case across the back seat, etc is all cause to draw eyes and questions in just about any east coast or west coast state.

It's the transit from getting the gun out of the vehicle and into some other building that garners attention. Or simply having the case visible in an unattended vehicle will drastically increase the chances of it being broken into and the firearm stolen.

In every single state leaving the rifle case on the back seat and walking into a store leaves the potential to draw attention for thieves walking the parking lot when there's obviously a gun in the car and you're out of sight. Even better is to put gun stickers on the back window and advertise that there's an increased chance of finding a poorly secured firearm behind a simple car door lock or single pane of autoglass.

Remember the PRS Finale a couple years ago when a bunch of guys got trucks full of guns stolen while the thing was parked outside their motel room? That was in a state where people are pretty cool about guns too... the thieves were so cool with guns that they decided to make someone else's guns their guns.

This Gator case is half or more the weight of the Savior bag, which is heavy. They make a mini case too that may be perfect

To guns guys sure, we can pick up on what is a gun case, generally speaking. Guy was just asking for a soft case for his shorty, didn't seem to require the utmost stealth, haha. Guitar cases are great but no guarantee against getting your rifle stolen as thieves like guitars as well, I would imagine.

MxTexas the Elite Survival case I linked fits a folded 18" with 4-port muzzle brake perfectly, it's a nicer case than the Saviour (I have both) and is manufactured in the USA.

I can picture my wife and I showing up at the range carrying 4 to 5 guitar cases, it'll be awesome and not at all weird 😆. I have bunch of Saviour cases and will be pickup up a few of the Elite cases. Hopefully catch their BF deal.

When I bought my Sig Sauer 205rifle, I didn't have a suitable case, and didn't buy a case when at the shop. I'd brought a guitar gig bag, though. With the gun laws here, I need a permit to buy and keep anything that goes bang. And when I buy one, I have to go to the police station to show it there. I used the gig bag for that too... :p

Re: 16-18 inch shorty rifles

I never heard of that carbine fom Savage. Is it new for 2011?
Savage offers 2 different Scout rifles in several chamberings 223 to 308. I bought the 110 Scout in 223 and put a SA rail on it and removed the mid-rail. Not happy with the accuracy from the short fat barrel/flash hider and put a 17 inch Sporter take off on. It's shooting 3/4 MOA.

Thanks everyone for inspiration when setting this one up. Sold some stuff on here to make it happen.

This setup will be used when the 20" AT or 26" .300 PRC are not the right fit. Painted and set up very similar to be a mini-me of the 300.

barrel details?

Built my 8yr old son a 6.5 Grendel on an Impact Precision with 18" Bartlein 8 twist carbon and with scope and titanium Griffin can its 8.75lbs. Running the blocked Hawkins flush mags it cycles the Grendel great and it allowed me some extra length to load 127 Barnes LRX over 30gr CFE223 in Lapua brass at 2405fps. While its not going to break any speed records it holds 1k pounds of energy to just over 300yds, has almost zero recoil, and punches WAY above its weight.
