Just wondering what is successful in the 243 Win with the 115 DTAC to achieve 3100 to 3150 fps. I have a Bartlein 7.7 5R 28" barrel and have tried RL-25 at up to 48.2 grains with very little in the way of pressure signs (very slight bolt hesitation and NO ejector marking) and have settled back to 47.5 to 47.8 as a safe Max. My hope of seeing 3100 fps does not seem doable though, highest velocity with 48.2 was 3103, avg was about 3070 with SD's in the mid 20s not what I had hoped for. Any suggestions as alternatives (H-1000, 4831SC ?) Am I possibly working with a slow lot (velocity wise) of RL-25?

Re: 115 DTAC at 3150 fps in 243 Win ?

308Sako was speaking of my rifle. '09 AIAW with a GAP .243 barrel done by Moon.
My first powder choice was 4831sc. Never got better than 3050 with horrible accuracy and too much pressure. I ruined a bunch of Lapua brass with it. next was H4350 which shot best at 3070ish and I will do a shoot off between that and RL17. The thing with H4350 is that it tuned at 43.4 then fell apart till 43.7 where it tuned again. So there is no window there as far as pressure curve goes, a change in temp would through any accuracy out the window for me.
RL17 got over 3K and did so with excellent accuracy and every charge weight shot well with some that shot phenomenally. So even if RL17 is temp sensitive I have a huge window where it still shoots great. RL17 is probably gonna be my final load.
I'm gonna play with 7828ssc just to satisfy curiosity but I think RL17 will be it for me.
I'll say GAP does a terrific barrel and Moon did a great job. As 308Sako said 1/3moa or better at 300 and there is still more accuracy there to get with some tuning. Also I'm always good for a flyer, you take those flyers away and it was 1/4 MOA at 300 easy instead of the lowly 1/3 moa lol.

ALMAORFE, on your 243 GAP barrel, what brand, land config. and twist rate are you working with? What are your min. and max. thus far for RL17 and have you settled on a bullet to land dimension that seems sweet?

Re: 115 DTAC at 3150 fps in 243 Win ?

My barrel is a Bartlein 5R, 26" 7.5"twist.
40.5 is the lowest and 41.6 is the highest I've gone with RL17 but I could probably go a bit higher. I'd rather run the lower pressure at this point though.
COAL is 2.855 base to ogive is 2.250. They never shot well touching the lands. Playing with seating depth is my next step in fine tuning the load.

Some barrels are faster than others and anything over 3K with the DTACs is doing good. I wouldn't get too caught up in trying to break 3100.

Re: 115 DTAC at 3150 fps in 243 Win ?

I have a GAP .243 Win. 26" barreled piece that they made up for me. With the DTAC 115 HxBN missiles, RL 22 (45 grains) gives 2900fps and RL25 with 47.5 grains gives 2975. Both at 12 feet screen placement. The RL 22 is more accurate, with groups running in the .3's.

Re: 115 DTAC at 3150 fps in 243 Win ?

Interesting. I haven't run either of those powders but that's Georges' RL25 load correct? The one he gets 3150 out of? Just goes to show how some barrels are just faster than others and that it doesn't really matter as long as it shoots.

Re: 115 DTAC at 3150 fps in 243 Win ?

I'm in a happy place at 2960 with moly'ed 115 DTACs & 41.5 gr H4350. 2.860" COAL from GAP built 1:7.5" twist Rock @ 26"...

Re: 115 DTAC at 3150 fps in 243 Win ?

Oh man! I know you are all going to wonder about me at this point! I sold my Oehler 35 a few months back thinking it was getting a little old and thinking something newer would be more accurate and bought into the sales hype of the CED M2 with the infrared lighting set up and the faster clock speed giving me an edge/hedge. Oh well, another mistake to learn from! Went out and shot this morning and borrowed a friends 12 year old ProChrono that I had previously tested against my Oehler 35 which would give identical velocities on several occasions and shot over it and the CED M2 at the same time. Well guess what!? The CED is a POC (piece-O-crap), although it appears to be a consistant POC at about 90 fps slow. So I guess I have my answer and now nothing but doubt about the overall accuracy of the CED product. And yes in answer to verifying the screens were fully seated and yes to trying it with and without the infrared lighting. So in the end I actually hit about 3200 fps for the max load with the RL25. This mornings loads were backed of to 47.8 and 47.5 and 1000 yd. vertical spread was a perfectly crappy 1 MOA with about a 60 fps ES. Good news is the gun is awesome, all rounds (24) were fired in absolute zero wind and they all would have cut a plumb line. So, back to load development and I will give your alternative powder suggestions a try and continue to tinker with the RL25 down to the 47.0ish range. Last note, I was at about .010" of the lands for those 24 rounds. And last ?, Anyone else had similar complaints about the CED M2 chrono or am I just one of the lucky ones?

As does Mike's and Jeff's in comparison to my Oehler... Makes me wonder!

Re: 115 DTAC at 3150 fps in 243 Win ?

Makes me wonder too. I bought it due to Bryan Litz' endorsement of it in his book. Wish I hadn't spent the money on it. Oh well you live and you learn.

Re: 115 DTAC at 3150 fps in 243 Win ?

Well...if you all are so "in the park" ish...verify the drop and BC's...run your tables, then modify the CED...if too fast a reading, a few strips of "cellophane" tape...read 3-M...on the ends of the extendable rod would probably zero in the CED...or if too slow, meaning the rod is too long,a few file strokes will bring the readings up to predictions...then the whole gizmo will be calibrated. JMHO FNP

Re: 115 DTAC at 3150 fps in 243 Win ?

I called CED today and of course they were mystified by my complaint. They promised to have their main tech give me a call in the evening but I didn't hear from them, YET. They tried to tell me that my testing process was flawed because, I did not test them together, which I did. Then it was because I had them in the wrong order and of course the CED which was in back would read slower, BUT, I had also reversed them with the same outcome, hmmm, they were running out of excuses and problems that I had caused. Anyway the usual run around. Yes I too considered modifying (shortening) the mounting tube, but it is only a week and a half old and supposedly it has a 30 day money back guarantee. We'll see how that turns out. Probably should have bought 2 ProChronos for the same money. I agree with using to measure just the ES but I don't have much confidence in a product that can't get it right to begin with, it would always leave me wondering ???

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: 7mmAM</div><div class="ubbcode-body">My CED runs 70fps slow consistently. I usually just use it to get ES and a close velocity, then I shoot out to 1500 and match drop. But it seems a consistent 70-75fps slow. </div></div>
I agree
I get my dope from real shooting too and the SD and ES numbers are more important to me as well. However they do not match the Oehler either. In fact I had 1 string that the CED gave me a 0 SD and 0 ES. couple that to the more than acceptable error readings and I'm not happy with it. it just doesn't work as advertised for me.

PS I apologize in advance for the lack of proper capitalization, my shift key seems to be taking a break.

Re: 115 DTAC at 3150 fps in 243 Win ?

Although this thread has gone a little off topic, my load is 47.5gr H1000 over a CCI BR2 in a Lapua nk sized case. Out of my 27" bbl I'm getting 2950fps.

In my attempts to find wicked velocity I tried H4350 first which spiked rather early. RL25 was a little faster than H1000, but not as accurate. The highest velocity I was able to attain (not paying attention to accuracy) was around 3070 or so before seeing pressure.
