16-18 inch shorty rifles

4 rifles built for task force south of Houston. Kinda of a Swamp camo thing going on.
16.5" barrel mounting SiCo Omegas.

This is a little rifle I built on a Model 600 Remington. Super budget build... I think I spent $400 on the whole thing. .308. Great hunting accuracy. Weighs nothing. I looked at a Ruger Scout Rifle that a friend bought and said to myself... There is a better way for the price.

This actually came after a discussion here on SH about Scout-type rifles. They were all the rage c. 2012. For about... a month.

Nice little brake. Adapted for this rifle, threaded and silver-soldered.

I splurged for aluminum bottom metal for the 600... because the original nylon is just, well, nylon. This is a nice black anodized one that I got off eBay.

The whole package. By far the smallest, lightest, handiest deer rifle I own... except maybe for a 94 Trapper. I ended up putting a Nikon scope on it. Nothing special. Not exactly pretty. And no TRG accuracy. But good for the woods here. It will hit minute of deer all day long!

Cheers,

Sirhr

to those of you shooting 6.5CM, what bullet weight are you shooting? I just got word my barrel is shipping soon, which means ill have it for deer season. I have a couple boxes of 143gr ELD-X precision hunter, but im wondering how the performance is out of a 16"-17", or if i'd be better off with something in the 120-130gr range.

I just started load testing with 123g SMKs after running a bunch of bullet/velocity combos through AB. Even with an 18", I'm still supersonic out to about 1000. The 142s will be within about 50 yards but will have slightly more drop (but less wind drift). It's all about what you're willing to compromise.

What weight bullets and factory loads are you guys having luck with, with your 16inch .308s?
I’m looking to compile a list and grab 6-8 different loads when the new rifle arrives and choose the best as my go to for hunting/long range shots.

Not a factory load, but my 16.5” 308 loves 178 eld-x bullets. Hornady Precision Hunter line of factory loadings includes that bullet: https://www.hornady.com/ammunition/rifle/308-win-178-gr-eld-x-precision-hunter#!/

Here's a 17.5" .308. Quite a hammer. Kreiger #5.5. Going to load up some 110 V-maxs for coyotes. Hope to finally nab one here in PA. It will have a smaller scope on it by then! Build using the patented rifle chamber cylinder.

Not mine, but in the process of building one. Figured these were relevant and could serve as some additional motivation for others.

The Carbon is an 18” 6.5 Creed, the Element is a 16” Blackout. Both are DMR built rifles.

For those of you shooting 16.5" 6.5 Creedmoore. What velocities are ya'll getting with factory ammo? I tend to favor the Hornady stuff and was wondering if I could expect 2500fps or better with a 16.5" barrel shooting their 140gr ELDM, or maybe even the 147gr ELDM?

This is my budget 17” 308. Rem 700 action x-caliber 308 win barrel, Bell and Carlson stock that I inlet for ptg m5 bottom metal, Leupold Mark 4 3.5-10x40, and silencerco Specwar 7.62. Shoots quite well with an old load I worked up for my 308 AR. One of these days I’ll get around to doing actual load development for this rifle. Super fun to shoot and easy to pack around.

I ordered direct from Proof. They said they would likely not respond quickly because of SHOT when I called them but they emailed me order info almost immediately. I don’t have the barrel yet so we will see how long that takes. Great people to deal with though.
