16-18 inch shorty rifles

I just purchased a Seekins Havak Element in 6.5 PRC with a 21" barrel. I haven't shot it yet, but in conversations with Seekins, they claimed that in their testing the PRC started to drop off much more precipitiously at lengths of less than 21". They said thats why they picked such an arbitrary barrel length. So there's that little nugget for ya.

Does anyone have any experience with a 6.5 CM under 16”? I couldn’t come up with much info on velocities on google and have a weird itch to sbr one of mine, probably 12-14 inches of it remains capable of taking deer size game ethically within 4-500 yds

Guns&Ammo: Precision Rifle Shooter had an article on shortening a 6.5CM inch by inch, and shorter than that, late 2019. I don't have it with me now. I recall he had to move the Labradar further away at about 11"

Got it now: mainly looks like hunting bullets.
A couple of samples:

Winchester 125gr Deer Season: 2842fps at 24", 2525fps at 14", 2400fps at 12"
Federal Premium 135gr Berger Hybrid Hunter: 2780fps at 24", 2441fps at 14", 2351fps at 12"
Black Hills 147gr Hornady ELD-M: 2524fps at 24", 2211fps at 14", 2109fps at 12"

Got the shorty (16.5in) 6.5cm out to 1k today. Unfortunately pulled it out later in the session with not a lot of ammo left over, but go hits on steel at 1k (obviously missed more than I hit) but surprised myself. Ending up dialing in 10.4mils of elevation, and held 2-2.4mils of wind with 147 Hornady ELDs:

Has anyone made a 16-18" 22 creedmoor? I am thinking a 17" 22 creedmoor since I have a spare 5.56 suppressor laying around. I think it would be a fun rifle for varmints and LR shooting.

I would think one would want to use a faster powder in a shorter to get a full burn. Anybody ever run quickloads to see?

I'd like to see some time based pressure data, too. In an era of doppler radar verified trajectories and drag curves, there MUST be someone mocking up actions with strain gauges to test powders.

I've been thinking about this over the last week and it occurs to me that traditionally, optimal powder burn rate is tied most closely to case design...specifically length/diameter. You could model the impact of bbl length on dwell time to optimize powder choice - however, I get the impression that we're working on the margins at that point, trading a longer impulse on which we lose more of the tail for a shorter, more ideal impulse.

Can't wait to take this to the range and then the farm
bergara ridge 18" 6.5 creed
I don't know if I'm going to get a better bipod because it'll be used for hunting 90% of the time and the rest for shooting steel to 1000 for fun.
@jwhjwh54 I picked up one of those myself, it is an amazing rifle! I love the look, the weight, and the accuracy. Only small change I made is drilling and bedding a rail to mount my bipod on.

16 1/2 308 1/10 twist. Aba chassis. Timmney 510. Shilen barrel on a trued 700 action. It’s a hell of a truck gun. The second picture is how it sits now.

Any one running a .308 1-12 twist 18”?

just bought an Accuracy International barrel for my AT and very tempted to chop it down.

I've debated the same because my factory LW barrel shoots so good. But I just got a 1-10 bartlein at 18", so I can shoot some super heavies. The 1-12 is rediculous accurate with the 155/168/175 but anything heavier got squirrelly past 400.
