Messing around with some Varget and the 73g Bergers. Barrel is a 16” 1-8t. Bergers just shoot.

Thoughts on a PVA Osprey barrel in 22cm? Any issues with the 6 groove barrels with 75-80ELDM or 77tmk? They have an ok Black Friday sale on barrels currently
 
Had some black friday deals so I went with a 1/7.5tw benchmark button rifled 6 grooves med palma for my 18in jack of all trade rifle on a ARC CDG with a xylo chassis for the 75-88gr weight range and I also got a carbon wrapped 1/7 18in for my defiance anti ultra lightweight hnt26 for the 77 lrx for dedicated varmint and white tail gun.
Going to use N555 exclusively with Alpha SRP brass.
Probably won't do much of load dev since the barrel life is short on these, I'll target for 3200 for the LRX, 80.5 and 3100 for the 88s which should be able 39-41gr of N550 at 2.65 according to VV, Hornady and QL

I shoot N555 in alpha srp brass, 18in 7.5tw 4gr 237 bore ace barrel. You're desired speed will likely require more powder. My barrel was cut with alpha 169fb chamber. I'm jumping 88s bout 50k at 2.71 oal, and with a drop tube, 43.5gr was all I could fit, 3150mv. Shoots well there but a bit toasty, dropped to 42.1gr and running 3040mv, all weather safe load. Just my experience with your exact desired load combo. Good luck!

4 groove, tight bores were the configuration that people theorized being hard on bullets in fast twists so your probably good. My unsupported theory is that a Shilen button rifled ratchet profiled 7.5 twist would be on the other end of that spectrum.
I recently screwed on a varmint contour 24" Shilen 7.5 twist ratchet rifled barrel. I will report back on how it works with the Hornady bullets... I am planning to primarily shoot the 80 ELDx which I am hoping will also avoid blow up issues due to its thicker jacket. The initial loads will be with H4350 and Alpha brass.
 
Figured I would report back on initial loads. All loads shot out of a 24" Shilen Select Match with 1/7.5 twist on a Rem 700 action.
Used the 80 ELD-X and 64 Nosler Bonded. All were Alpha LRP brass with CCI-200's.

Both H1000 and N565 are a little on the slow side with 80's. Topped out around 3150 with 45 gr of each (they were equivalent), and this was a compressed load. No concern for pressure.

With H4350 and the 80's, I topped out at 38 gr and 3050 fps. I think H4350 is a bit too fast for maximum velocity.

The Nosler 64's got up to 3550 with 42.5 gr of H4350. Didn't try any slower powders.

Plan for next session is to try some N555, N560, and Superformance.

Very tight. All 5 groups were easy 1/2-3/4 moa. I’ve never had to do any load dev with these bullet, same results in my 223 rem.

Dogshit accuracy. I think these need more jump. I’ll try again at 2.58in and if I can’t find anything decent I’ll dump them for Speer 75 GD or the 77 TMK

Lol, I was thinking the same thing, but completely opposite. If you're going to pay $130 per hundred pieces of brass, $0.40 bullets, and $350 - 400 for a jug of powder, $800 - 900 custom barrel.....why settle for Ruger American Ranch accuracy?
I'm just surprised that people go out and buy the best of the best and are happy with that type of accuracy. You could get it for a lot less in components.

I'm not sure, but I suspect this "Load development is a myth" kick has people okay with 3/4" groups.
For this specific build, 1/2 even 3/4 moa will do. It'll be the wife's coyote/white tail gun and it's topped with a S&B 3-12 with a fairly heavy P3 reticle on a HNT26 chassis.

I have another barrel inbound from my smith for my heavy ARC CDG that will be a dedicated precision build. I promise it'll shoot like yours.
 
My redding die was fucked straight out of the box for some reason so I just ordered Whidden bushing FL die with a 251 bushing which I think will work for Alpha OCD 22cm brass.
 
Building a 22 Creedmoor, 26 “ heavy barrel. Plan to shoot Berger 85.5s using Peterson brass. What kind of free bore would you say I need? Figure I would use an alpha reamer (.120 or .165) was thinking the .120 but not sure how far I need to seat the bullets out to get some speed.
 
I've been shooting 22 CM's for the past seven years. all six of them have never had a bullet blow up in the air....

No tight bores, all of them have been .219's, and I don't let the carbon build up. all of them are either 6.5's, or 1-7's.

I've driven 88's and 90's past 3250fps, 75's past 3600fps with zero issues.
That's wild. Maybe I shouldn't worry so much

It will be a dedicated thermal coyote hunting rig so I’ll never shoot anything heavier than a 69gr tmk. Planed to shoot the berger 60 gr varmints, 62 gr varmageddons or possibly the 62 gr eldvt.

Fast and flat is the game.

Had an interesting range day.

Good news:
Found a decent load with the 77LRX (pic below), they needed way more jump than I thought. I did this group at 2.575in coal (0.060 jump)
Brand new Alpha brass, CCI 450, 41.7gr N555

Bad news:
This is not a cartridge that works in the cold with N555 and SRP. I've never had an issue with the CCI 450s in 6.5 creed and H4350 in the cold but today it was barely below freezing and snowing a bit and I was getting really bad ignition issues. Make sense since N555 is slower burning than 4350.
Also tried a brand new PVA jet 6mm muzzle brake and for whatever reason, it gave me 2+ moa vertical. Very odd.

I'd go with N540. It's the most temp stable out of that list and will easily give you 3550-3650FPS out of the 55-60gr
N550 would also work probably even better. Bit more speed, bit less pressure, bit more case fill.

Like you I live in a frozen waste land . So temp stability is something I always look for. Usually load development is in warmer weather. Try to avoid doing it in the winter incase of pressure spikes do to heat

Well if you live or plan to hunt anywhere that’s cold learn from my mistake and don’t buy 300 pcs of SRP brass. Fuck me.

I wouldn't use LVR or CFE223. They are a little bit too fast of burn rate. The N550/555 or H4350/RL16 class burn rate will maximize your velocity even with bullets in the 60-69 weight grain class.

I do have some N555 but haven't tried it yet under the Nosler 64's. I will likely give this a try soon... Hornady load data lists a top velocity for 62 gr bullets in the 3850 range, and that is SMOKING.

You may be OK with SRP's in smaller volume cases like 223, but there is a very high chance for ignition issues particularly if using charges > 40 gr in very cold weather no matter what powder you run. I would without question use LRP cases.

What do ignition issues look like? Is it just the round not going off despite a good primer strike?
 
An update for some N555, N560, N565, Superformance, and Magnum loads. I did a combination of ladders as well as some 3 shot groups. Of note cratering is not very reliable for pressure as I have a stock Rem 700 action with a non-bushed firing pin. The OAL was 2.338 for 64 BSB (Nosler 64 bonded) and 2.610 for 80 ELDX. Temp was 35 degrees and on/off rain. No ignition issues.

64 BSB and N555 was a disappointment. Velocity was only OK at 3490 at near starting loads of 44.5 gr, and pressure was obviously high with an ejector mark. Had to stop ladder.

80 ELDX/Superformance had good velocity with 3220 @ 43.4 gr. No pressure.
80 ELDX/Magnum was 3180 @ 48 gr. Some slight cratering.
80 ELDX/N560 was 3200 @ 44 gr. No pressure.

Tried some 3 shot groups with 80 ELDX/N565, with 44.5, 45.0, 45.4. All of these were quite heavily compressed, and also HOT. All had at least somewhat hard bolt lift. 45.4 was ave 3210, but w/ejector mark and cratering. Accuracy was OK

3 shot groups with Nosler 64 BSB/H4350 were much better, with 42.5, 43.0, 43.5. Very slight cratering at 43.5 but easy bolt lift and no ejector marks. 43.5 was ave 3575, and very accurate.

Was very surprised by the N555 results. I feel N565 is a little too slow for the 80's. Going to stick with H4350 for the lighter bullets, and try some groups w/N560 and Superformance. While temperature sensitive, I am not afraid of ball powders as I have had excellent results from them in other calibers (H335 is an all-time favorite in 223 for me).
 
My understanding of N555 is that it is a similar but slightly slower burn rate to H4350, which should be perfect for lighter bullets. If it over-pressures before max with lighter bullets that would seem to indicate to me that it is not optimal for heavier bullets.

N560 seemed absolutely perfect for the 80's and my ladder went up to published Hornady max without any pressure at all and better velocities.

1. Shooting 80-90s, what’s the verdict on twist? 7? 8? Somewhere in between?
2. Min barrel length? I’m thinking 22 with a TB Ultra 7 attached all the time. Anyone going 20 or shorter?
New build on Precision 737R with a Stuteville Precision 20" Bartlien Carbon Fiber barrel. It's in a Magpul 700 stock now but i intend to put it in a graphite stock. I'm shooting suppressed with a Gemtech Dagger. All I've shot so far are the factory Hornady Match 80gr ELD-M and Hornady Precision Hunter 80gr ELD-X. The ELD-Ms are shooting better groups than the ELD-Xs. I'm using them for initial barrel break-in, shoot, clean repeat, so i haven'tgiven them a fair chance.
I have 100 pieces of Alpha SRP brass prepped and an starting loading tonight. I intend to start with the Hornady ELD-VT bullets, the try the Berger 75-80 grain bullets.
This is primarily intended as a coyote gun.

Consistently in the 0.4-0.6 MOA group range for 5 shot groups.

Moderate load with no pressure signs. Hopefully stays that way with hotter weather.
