Need some input for the desired build (recommendations) using bolt action rifle with 224 Valkyrie shooting SD prarie dogs out to 1000 +/- yards with scope for $3000 budget . And yes I will be handloading all input welcome I will try to answer any thoughts as time allows Thanks

I believe The Vortex Gen ll 4.5 X 27 will kill the $3000 budget besides I already have one on an AR15 I built and I love the scope, However, I do want to use a chassis system and leaning toward a 26" inch barrel. The action will eat up a lot of the budget as well. Therefore I might have to re-figure the budget. I am very curious as to what will be offered after Shot show 2019

I just ordered a 26” Valkyrie barrel today from PVA. I also have a KRG Bravo sitting here and I’m saving for another Origin to finish my build.

My other PVA Barrel shoots so good I’m willing to wait.

You could call Mile High Shooting as well. Idk about lead times but I know they can turn out a pre-fit from whatever you want. They have a good barrel selection on hand also.

I’m already building a new gun off of a TL3 in 25 Creed but wanting to eventually get a 224Valk pre-fit and a few cases of ammo for practice/local/why not reason! Lol

Because I'm curious... what are your plans, re: projectile selection and muzzle velocity?

I ask because I have been playing with a .223 AI and seeing 2800+ FPS shooting the Sierra 90s with a 26" 7-twist barrel using 2000-MR powder. I am confident that a hand loaded Valk will be able to exceed that, but if your performance goals can be met with 223 AI, there are (IMO) reasons to go that route rather than Valk (mostly in regard to brass availability/quality and the ability to shoot inexpensive, easily-found, off-the-shelf ammo in the form of the parent cartridge).

I am also curious as to why you chose 224 valk for a bolt action rifle. In no way do I think it's a dumb idea so don't take it the wrong way. Just curious as to why you went with a 224 valk where you aren't limited by cartridge OAL.

I picked the Valkyrie because it's new and I wanted to see what results I could get with the heavy 88gr-95gr bullets. Several options for available factory ammo also. I was looking for something cheaper with less recoil than my 6.5 Creedmoors and wasn't interested in a standard 223 or AI. I prefer bolt actions and with my TL3 I can swap bolt heads and barrels at will. This is a just for fun test for me. If I can get it to shoot well I may try it at our local field precision rifle matches.

Thats a good enough reason for me. Should be a sweet shooter!

No arguments as to the 233 AI vs 224v choice, since it’s somewhat academic and a personal choice. So many options and choices in rifle shooting are available and sometimes it’s just nice to do it differently.

Just wanted to point out that already, .224V 75g ammo is available at local Walmarts for $9.96/box and Starline is making pretty good brass for those that don’t want to use Federal or Hornady.

I chose the 224 Valkyrie as a medium range caliber with low recoil. I already have a fantastic AR15 in 223 I modified it shoots great and out to 500-800 yards lots of fun. Then I also have a great 6.5 Creedmoor built that with factory Match ammo shoots sub MOA groups. I feel this gun is perfect for 1000-1600 yards but the recoil is not un bearable like some 308 I have shot. However after a full day of 250+ rounds takes its toll on me. Therefore I was looking for a new project that can fit in between the AR15- 223 Remington and my Savage 6.5 Creedmoor. BTW all my guns shoot better than me the shooter, if you know what I mean. LOLs . My soul purpose is South Dakota Prarie Dogs. The Guide I use does not shoot close in we start at 300+ yards and out to 1500 Yards if you want to test your skills that far. And I am just conducting research for the future build this year. Thanks for all the input thus far.

Fair enough... like I said, I was just curious. I have been playing with that 223 AI and have been just ridiculously impressed, but this isn't the place for my love letter to that chambering.

Let us know how your project goes!

I plan on building a 224 myself. With a TL3 I’ll be able to use the 224 for practice, change the bolt head and barrel and use my 6.5 for comps. I have a feeling the 224 will be a very popular round soon enough. It was mentioned before but a origin action and a shouldered barrel will be a good place to start also IMO.
