Hey PA Valkyrie, would you mind mentioning your 95SMK / CFE loads here? Or have you posted them on the reloading loads thread? I'm trying to work up a load now with 95SMK's using RL17 and it's been a bear.

75 ELD with 8208 would be the most interesting to me.
Sorry..... Dont know what I'm doing...Going to run the 75gr ELDM along with the 77gr TMK, however, I have yet to receive the TMK shipment....and then this finally happened...

What are your personal preference on virgin brass? Starline, Hornady or Federal? I've heard of sloppy pockets from sStarline and Federal, but I haven't heard anything about Hornady quality.
No, but mine are shipped from MHS as of yesterday, so should have them next week.i realize this is the reloading forum, but has anyone gotten and shot the factory hornady 88 eldm loads yet? any input, and any comparisons with the fed gm 90's?
No. At least not in my opinion... I've got a 26" that pushes them at 2790 but thats with Max charge of cfe223.Is 2750-2800 a realistic number for the 88 eld in a 20" barrel?
Max charge as in book max or max as in oh crap I better not go any further than that? No. At least not in my opinion... I've got a 26" that pushes them at 2790 but thats with Max charge of cfe223.
Nice. I think my 5.56 is about to become a Valkyrie! Anyone have any experience with McGowen Valkyrie barrels? Ive heard good things about their other barrels.Well since I haven't found a book that has the 88 ELDs listed, Quickload says I'm right at the top of the 90 SMK, they are seated as deep as they should be, and I'm starting to flatten primers with light swipe and very light ejector marks occasionally. I would not run any hotter without throwing brass away after loading. And I'm running a 1:7.5 so it it may have slightly lower pressure curve than a 1-7 or 1-6.5 that they recommend...Lol.
But they are shooting quite well and supersonic to 1250-1300+.
I'm using the same dies. No problems for me but I use a VLD chamfer and am fairly aggressive when prepping virgin Federal brass. I didn't notice any donuts when setting bump at .002. The factory mandrel seems to be a bit on the small side though: I measured .005-.006 neck tension. I think it could be you need a bit more chamfer or switch to VLD style (if not already using one).
On a side note, I posted in the Semi Auto thread about factory brass shoulder datum line moving forward about .012 from virgin to first fire. I think either Federals brass is too small or I have a long chamber... Anyone able to measure virgin shoulder (.330 Headspace insert) vs once fired ?
I started loading the 88 gr ELD-M with RL17. The first try was not successful, but I'll be back at it soon. The accuracy was lacking (1.5 moa ish) but the velocity was pretty good at around 2600 from an 18".
what mags are you using?I’ve heard and seen first round/sled pick-up rounds having different POIs, but not last round in the mag? Difference in slipping against a follower rather than a brass case affecting feeding???
It could also be the fact that the bolt locks back on the last round.I’ve heard and seen first round/sled pick-up rounds having different POIs, but not last round in the mag? Difference in slipping against a follower rather than a brass case affecting feeding???
Bullet is long gone by the time the bolt gets that far.It could also be the fact that the bolt locks back on the last round.
Im hoping to get a decent-ish load developed using RL-17 for the simple fact i can use it for my other long range gun as well. If i have any better luck with it, i will post the load data. my barrel is a 24inch. who is the manufacture of your barrel and what is the twist rate?
FYI cabelas is having a sale on Hornady 88gr ELD box ammo for $17.99. its back ordered but i picked up 5 boxes to get some hornady brass and compare their results to hand loads.
know of any coupon codes??
Hello everyone. Been following and studying everyone's progress. I to am an avid reloader. 30+ years. Purchased mine mainly for coyotes. My range persecution isn't what it use to be so I chose the valkyrie to gain a few more yards. I need a little help. Been playing with the 88g eld. I purchased the 224 valkyrie AR dies made by rcbs. I have sent them an email asking if they sold a seater stem and they want reply back. I have even searched there web site and cant find anything. Does any of you knowledgable reloaders know if they make one for the eld and possible a part #. It really bothers me that my dues are making a small indention on the bullets. Thanks for anyone that can help.
Thank you so much for taking the time explain your successful process. Greatly AppreciatedWell heres what I did: remove seater stem from die, found a drill bit that is slightly smaller than diameter of hole in seating stem, wrapped in electrical tape so that only 1/4 inch or so of tip of bit is exposed and drilled out center to prevent tips from getting mashed up.
Then take the seater stem and Chuck into drill. Grab an 88 ELD or two and put valve grinding compund on bullet. Spin stem on bullet applying new compound every so often. After a minute or two, grab new bullet and repeat. Then put 000 steel wool on bullet and repeat. Then JB Borebright or Bore paste, same procedure...
When completed, your stem will be perfect for VLD bullets and less likely to create ring on bullet when seating. Also no more tip damage.
I should also note that if shooting compressed loads, it's VERY VERY difficult to completely eliminate the slight ring on the bullets. There is just too much force on a small rather hollow area of copper jacket.Thank you so much for taking the time explain your successful process. Greatly Appreciated
Something I have heard but never done is to take JB weld or some other compound, maybe one of those that the two parts mix to make a putty, and then put a blob on/in the stem. Then coat a bullet with oil or wax and press it into the compound and let it dry. Then you have a mold that will exactly match the bullet and will not mark it at all. I imagine that would work very will if done right.I should also note that if shooting compressed loads, it's VERY VERY difficult to completely eliminate the slight ring on the bullets. There is just too much force on a small rather hollow area of copper jacket.
If you have a perfect fit into the seating stem, should be very minor.
Also forgot to say be sure to clean the hell out of the seater between each material type. And definitely a final clean before reinstalling in your die.
Good luck!
Are you guys crimping or not crimping for your .224 AR's? I'm getting set up to reload 95 SMK's and the Hornady 88's. Neither have a cannelure, but I'm still nervous that OAL might change in a semi-auto.
Thanks for all of the great info here...
