Still would take this with a grain of salt as the inspecting party was the one pushing to use locally manufactured towers, that are not the part with cracks.

Energy is their achilles’ heel just like any nation. If they starting getting overly aggressive and shipping was embargoed, any short term adventures would turn against them in the long run. China’s best move is to show strength but not use it, and acquiring things through bribery and more peaceful means. Not invading and enslaving other populations at gun point.

Wind and solar make up about 10% of electrical energy. It will never keep up with what a good ole coal fired plant or gas can produce. Unless demand goes way down which won't happen. They are pissing in the wind. We have all the energy we need right here.

Wind turbines are profitable no doubt, the pace of development in regards to blade size= tubine power has been so rapid that the 15+y old wind farms are very uncompetitive in comparison to new ones. But as we can expect the prices of electricity to only really go up if electric cars become the norm, these wind projects will only become more profitable in the future.

When i was last involved with wind turbines, 100m turbines that are the norm now were cutting edge developments, like in all sectors cost-effectiveness increases exponentially with size.
Also, note that once you have a wind farm up you can continue upgrading to more efficient turbines with limited fuss compared to breaking new ground

But of course, when it comes to grid stability, you need large nuclear or coal plants to keep the grid stable and a bunch of gas powered plants to work on-demand as renewables are not producing constant power all day or all year round.

And like most renewables, they are hardly renewable at end of life ,no way to recycle them blades, but keep in mind same problem with most RVs,Boats, etc..

About 10 years ago or so they cornered the market on diesel, if you drive a diesel truck and aware of when diesel prices starting moving high above gasoline prices. One of the reasons was china buying up all the diesel, to power the factories.

Doing it like this Is one of the reasons China has such a smog problem.

It’s also why they’re so interested in controlling the South China Sea, the whole nine dash line dispute, lotta potential energy out there in that Sea.

Second more important is the emission regulations, in the west coal power plants built anytime in past 30+years all have filltration to reduce emmisions many older chinese ones don't .

Folks have no idea about the magnitudes of difference between emissions from old vs new plants.

For example in 250+ coal fired powerplants in EU produce a fraction of the emissions of one single old powerplant in Ukraine. One fucking plant . Imagine having multiple such plants. China is full of these older gen plants without filtration.

Burshtynska TPP is the dirtiest power plant in Europe, Ukraine emits more toxic dust containing heavy metals than all EU countries,Turkey, and the Western Balkans combined.
Ukraine produces 72% of all emissions of fly ash, 27% of sulfur dioxide, and 16% of nitrogen oxides in all of Europe combined with Turkey.

Continental Europe emissions, Ukraine is like China. , note the emission share of tiny Balkan countries, which is down to old primitive coal plants not the number or power these plants generate

I agree modern power plants are much “greener” and China still uses many older plants without the modern catalysts.

That Doesn’t take away from the fact that the use on site diesel generators is extremely high when compared to other countries. Is it solely responsible, no but it’s part of the problem.

Even right now the Chinese government is rationing electricity supplies and a lot of businesses are scrambling to use generators to develop on site power.

The article provides some clues.
First the cracks are on the top of the Nacelle housing. They are not on the blades, turbine, or mechanical parts.
Second the project was completed in 2020 and only began operation in July this year. These are installed and operational turbines.
Third the inspectors were the Union reps, who were concurrently upset that union jobs were lost to China manufacturing facilities.

Fourth, and perhaps the most important point that was neglected from this article is that the Stockyard Hill Wind Farm is owned by a subsidiary of the same company that manufactured the turbines.....
