6.5 Creedmoor

Just for reference for anyone, I'm getting ~2,825 fps (with my chrono 10' out) from my Hornady 140 amax factory ammo. Running a 25" Bartlein. Temps were ~35F and ASL was ~7,000'. I haven't opened one up yet to look at powder...maybe I'll do that and check charge weight.

It will be around 42-42.5

ive done it and the 41.5 on the box is apparently lawyer jargon or their starting point. I know they supposedly load to velocity but I've never seen one broke down with 41.5 in it.

Anybody have load data for a 123gr Scenar with RL17? I thought i'd use the 123gr sierra's as a baseline and go from there.

Also, what's up with the BC on these bullets? Lapua lists it as .527 where litz has it at .547 in applied shooter app. So which is correct?

I finally got ahold of another hundred Hornady factory loads and they shot great in my rifle. I've been having a hard time getting the 140gr AMAX to group well in my rifle and after seeing these factory rounds shoot I thought there was hope after all. I opened one up to see what powder charge weight they were coming with from the factory and was surprised to see that it was not H4350 inside but some other extruded powder that is all black.

It weighed in at 41.3gr, any idea what they have switched to? The sticker on the outside of the box still says 41.5gr H4350 - no surprise there, the last box I checked in May of 2013 was 43.1gr but was still H4350. This stuff looks nothing like the H4350 I have used over the last year.

On the 6.5 Creedmoor Forum they came to the conclusion that it is Hybrid 100V being loaded into the recent lots of 140 grain A-Max Ammo.

COAL to Ogive 2.850"
Factory Brass
CCI BR2
H4350 43.2 grains
Berger 140 Hybrid
20" Bartlein 1-8" 5r chambered by Tooley for AINA
TBAC suppressor
Ammo temp 85 degrees F
-900 ft DA

2760 fps

So can some explain to how this works the book max per hornady is 40.9 gr of h4350 with a 140gr bullet but their suggested load is 41.5 gr. now go to hogdons web sight and they say that with a 140gr amax the max is a 40.0 gr compressed load what the hell am I missing.

If you have been reloading long enough you will learn sometimes the books are on the conservative side with certain loads.

Loading on my Score High 27in 1/8.5 twist Brux on a Surgeon 591 action:

Started with 42.5 grains of H4350, 2.80 OAL (approx 0.015 off lands) at around 2800 FPS with 139 Scenars.

At about 2000 rounds performance started to drop off so I redeveloped a load of 43.0 grains at 2.85 OAL for just about the same velocitity.
Just tripped over 3,000 rounds and still right at aobut 2800 FPS.

If you buy factory hornady just a heads up I had 1 out of 100 rounds do this

Thanks to JFcomfort for the help with the varget loads.

Looks like 39.5gr of Varget with .015" jump using the 123gr lapua scenars are what my rifle likes.

with .010" jump this load averages in the .5-.6MOA range, never got anything less. Same with .020" jump, so i believe i found the sweet spot.

The flyers here were honest called shots (let pressure off the rear bag as i was breaking the shot).

I haven't chronoed these yet, but i know 40.0gr of varget gets me 2920 from my 22" barrel so I'm thinking 2890ish.

Looks like .015" jump was the answer for the scenars.

Getting 2907 out of my 22" barrel with 39.5gr of varget

I'm about to load my first cartridges, and the manuals seem ultra conservative based on what I've been reading here in regards to charge weight. Do I really need to start at 39.0 gr of H4350, or am I just wasting ammo and time? That's what the manuals start at...I was thinking of starting at 41.0 gr and going up in 0.5 gr increments for my first attempt. Gonna try an OCW method at Great Guns this weekend at 100 and 300 yards.

I'll be using:

Hornady 1x fired (in my rifle) brass
140 VLD hybrid or 130 VLD (Berger of course)
H4350
Fed 210m

It's an 8.5 Bartlein, at 25" and is suppressed, if that makes any difference. It shoots the factory Hornady stuff (120 & 140) really well.

The box hornady says that to match their ballistics you load 41.5 gr h4350 I started at 40.9 and went to 42.4 with a 139 scenar ended up going with 42.1 in my 24 in Kriger

How did the 120 Scenars compare accuracy wise to 123 Scenars or others in same weight range. Have been holding off on a Midway purchase looking for other results, but there is little real info to be found yet. Thx.

I havent ran the 123 Scenars in the 6.5 Creed (only 120-L's) but during load dev I shot an 8 shot group (at my buddies target just messing around) and all were touching in a dime size hole. For me that is great cause Im not a fan of punching paper. Im running them with RL17 and so far great results with no pressure signs and great consistancy.

I have 4K and wouldnt hesitate to buy more if it we're reasonable...

What tool are you using to measure this? I swear that every time I think I have reloading figured out there is something I've been forgetting.

A bunch of different tools out there like this one
Hornady Manufacturing Company :: Reloading :: Metallic Reloading :: Tools & Gauges :: Lock-N-Load Gauges-Formerly Stoney Point :: Headspace Gauges :: Headspace Gauge Kits :: Lock-N-Load® Headspace Kit With Body 1 Each

Any tool that measures from the base to datum line of the brass on the shoulder. Some people actually use fired pistol brass but I like to use a more precise tool.

I was just looking at that. Which attachment is used for 6.5 Creedmoor

Hey guys, I'm new to the hide and reloading in general and I had a few questions. I'm running a new Ruger M77 Hawkeye in 6.5 creedmoor and I'm impressed with the performance of the 140 gr Amax factory loads from hornady but I'm curious because ballistic data is out of a 24" tube and mine is 26". I've also put less than 20 rounds through it so it is nowhere near broken in yet. I guess my question is what are you guys seeing for velocities in factory ammo out of a 26" barrel and is anyone willing to post their results from close to factory loads with the 140gr Berger VLD hunting bullets. Again thanks for the help.

See that you're new-welcome aboard. You needn't go further for a wealth of information than reading through this thread, start to finish. And when in doubt, the search function can be most helpful-defer to it first and you'll often find what you're looking for. 4350 or RL17 are 'go to' powders for 130-140 range bullets. Good luck with your project.
