6gt

I havent tried that powder in the Dasher or GT.
SW Precision pressured out way too quickly. That powder always seems to underperform compared to Varget in every caliber I've tried it.
I've heard of people hitting pressure in Dasher before, but not GT. Know a few guys who run it as a substitute for Varget because that's all they could find and it seems to work well for them in the GT. I've got a bunch of it but haven't tried it in my GT. Still one of the few burning through circa 2004 Varget lot numbers. :)

I did some work up in the Dasher today with H4350. I thought it would work out with the heavy 95gr SMK. I found a pretty good load with it at 33.4grs @ 3060fps. It is full case fill at 35grs.

SW Precision pressured out way too quickly. That powder always seems to underperform compared to Varget in every caliber I've tried it.

But it's good to know I can run the 4350 in both. I would probably try the SW version if I ever found it on the shelf. But they haven't had any shipments come stateside in a pretty long time..
Ive read the only SW powder with similar temp stability as the Hodgdon equivalent was Precision being near same as Varget, the rest being noticeably more prone to temp related velocity swings. Have you found SW long rifle to be relatively temp stable?

Another 6GT GAP in a Foundation Stock. First time out with it

Bore sighted, 5 Rounds into some shooter's leftover target still down range. Splatter target even, not good for acquiring a precise bull.

9 shots left to test Velocity....

N150 starting points with a 105 hybrid. Loaded up a small amount (5rds of ea powder charge) just to get some data as i have none to go off of. 1x fired Hornady brass and a CCI450. 26in bartlein barrel approx 450 rds on it.

32.0 grains = 2840 av fps 27 ES 10.7 SD
32.5 grains = 2870 av fps 19 ES 7.8 SD
33.0 grains = 2900 av fps 10ES 4.5 SD

The 32.0 test had 1 rd that was low (2818) velocity throwing the numbers off a bit but it had the highest es/sd. 33.0 had the best ES of 10 and SD of 4.5. Will update when i get to do some more testing.

34.0 gr Varget, Berger 109 @3000 fps. No heavy bolt lift. Back off on charge or keep sending?

Thanks

Those primers are trying to tell you something. Actually, they’re screaming it. I’d imagine those primer pockets won’t last long.

But honestly, on paper, that load doesn’t seem overly hot. Especially considering the speed. What else is going on to make those primers crater like that? Can you try different brass? Maybe try another powder.

How much would you come down?
I'd come down in .1 or .2 grain increments depending on how much brass/powder/time you have and find out A) where that primer issue stops happening and B) where the upper node is and how big it is. For example, let's say the primers start looking good at 33.6 and the velocity is 2990 then you go 33.4 33.2 and they both shoot 2975 with idy bidy groups and the sd is 4-5 you then would know there is a nice velocity node there that's not on the edge of over pressure. I just had my 5th 6.5 SAUM barrel give me a reminder recently that every barrel is different and there are no shortcuts in this game. I was getting all excited at how good it was shooting and tried to rush the process only to have it speed up 100 fps on me at the 150 ish round mark and ended up having to pull about 200 loaded rounds. Bummer, dropped the charge back down in the manner I just suggested and it's hammering again tiny groups and low sd's. It was frustrating and time consuming but the finished product is worth it.

Ah, the old "start way too high and work down in hair-splitting increments" method. I heard about that on the internet.

If you're primers are trying to become liquid and flow through your firing pin hole, I doubt coming down .1gr is a reasonable. And there's way too much white noise overlap in .1 gr ladders.

I think I heard some new reloading trick where the idea was to start LOW and then work up. In .3gr increments. 30fps at a time.
34gr is a pretty standard load for 6GT. No use in doing a bunch of ladder work on a brand new barrel. Plus I had no pressure signs previously. This was the first time seeing something like this, about 300 rounds down the pipe. Obviously- im going to make a change.

Yes. I wanted to add that starting high in pressure and working down in .1gr increments is a bad suggestion and what you think you're seeing as a node is probably just random overlap from an excessively small modulation.

But you don't want to hear it and the very human part of your ego's need to protect your id wants to discredit that info as another man's hubris.

So you do you.
Classic Ski! :)

would agree that in the neighborhood of 34 g is a standard load, with hornady brass. With Alpha you back off anywhere from .8 to 1.2 less powder. When a cci 450 craters into your firing pin hole thats not good. If it pierces your primer you will have damage to your bolt face and firing pin.

You can continue to believe that velocity nodes don’t exist if you want. A guy came in the forum to pose a question and I offered help because I’ve been there. I know, what an asshole. Your buddy comes in and shits all over it, I pushed back a bit and he switched gears to wannabe cowboy psyche major. On one hand saying .1 grains = 10fps on the other saying .1 grains is to small of a change to matter. Totally rekt bruh. Sounds like the guy asking the question is gonna get it sorted out and all is well so that’s that.

Varget 33.2 for 2880
or
Varget 32.6 for 2815ish both are solid.

(I currently don’t trust my labradar, and haven’t trued these yet, so these speeds maybe slow by 30fps)

Hello All . im researching my first bolt action build . Decided on the 6gt but barrel length and profile I can’t decide on . I want to use my thunder beast silencer so I was thinking a 24’’ barrel should work well or should I just go with a 26’’? I do want to start shooting match’s and don’t know much about the weight of the rig off of barriers and bags but I was thinking heavy Palma or m24 profile . sorry for the noob questions but bolt action completely new to me

Thanks reubenski that’s what I was looking for a little confirmation . This threads been pretty good with info and loads to help get started .I read that about the .237 bore and that’s what I was looking at in a bartlein or a krieger was leaning toward the krieger just always wanted one .Altus has the defiance deviant action barrel combo in 6gt with heavy Palma profile instock .i Might just go ahead a get that saves the trouble of getting a blank and having it spun up . my first piece of the puzzle should be here this week a manner prs-tcs stock . Really excited to start this build it’s been a long time coming and saving

Thanks for that info . didn’t realize the deviant couldn’t take prefits . Definitely was going with the nitrated version . The ruckus and deviant was the choices I liked from defiance and the other one I liked was the bighorn tlr3 . i Really like that you can swop the bolt head of the tlr3 but I’m not sure it would get enough use to be worth it .

Another option worth looking into is the Impact 737r, Altus has them in stock and will do a barreled action deal.

Didn’t look at the impact much ……but I’m looking real hard now . It looks similar to the defiance but people seem to like them better . At least that’s what I’ve found in my quick research on the internet . im Really glad I started asking you guys for your opinions .

I have been running an impact action for the last three years, actively compete in PRS comps both pro and regional. I love the action and have had zero complaints or failures with it... Tate Streater makes a great product, supports our sport, actively competes, match directs and is just a great guy! He is the T in JTAC if your ever looking for some training too.

This year I tried running a Thunder Beast dominus and used a 24" barrel rather than the 26" inch barrels I had been using. Once you consider the length of the brake and the barrel length's I think my 24" with the dominus was maybe a inch longer over all than the 26" had been with a brake. It definitely wasn't holding me back in my movement through stages. My velocity loss between the two lengths using the same load was only around 30fps.

Ultimately I decided to go back to the muzzle brake because I was having a hard time adjusting to the recoils extended push while trying to spot my impacts on targets. That said, the combo was awesome and fun to shoot. I'd like to try a Area 419 maverick in its short configuration with the brake on the end, that might be my holy grail...

If you decide to go with the prefit option, I have had great experiences with Nick over at Straight Jacket Armory. Follow Straight Jacket Armory over on Facebook. Last I knew he was running a special on prefits and he offers a few different barreled actions that are prefit compatible, including Impact Precision.

Impact is a superior action IMO. You may be splitting hairs, but there is a reason about half of PRS shooters nationwide run an impact. Its an updated surgeon which was the golden standard of actions for over 10 years.

They just keep running in really bad conditions. Bartlien barrels are always in stock and can be had in days. Bolts, stocks , basically everything you could need to build a rifle, they sell direct and no sales tax. If you are military/LE, even better.

I do not think there is a better off the shelf action than an Impact when you take everything into consideration. Quality, Reliability, Availability.

Thanks guys . niles I’m glad to hear the 24’’ barrel didn’t hold you back and didn’t lose enough velocity to make that length a dud . i definitely shoot better with a silencer but 99% of this has been behind a gas gun .

Looking for some input. I been running my 6 gt loaded up with 36gr of h4350, alpha brass, br4 primers, with a berger 109lrht. I have been getting a velocity of 2868, and at my match today i was experiencing some hard bolt lift. I am running 3 thou of neck tension on annealed brass, seated 1.935 cbto, which is .065 of lands. I bump my shoulders 3thou. It was also 100degrees at the match today.

So does any of this sound off and would cause a hard bolt lift on a defiance action? Primers look very good, i do get a slight amount of ejector swiping.
