This is a little less than a year-old. It is a nice write-up. Maybe some of you know Ilya Koshkin, on a site called "Optics Thoughts." He compares, Steiner, Minox, NightForce, Kahles, Leupold, Vortex and Tangent Theta in the 2-18 'ish range.

He was very complimentary to the Kahles and Minox. As usual, I would be interested in what others feel of the read. I am interested to see that in the Steiner, he prefers the T5Xi over the M5Mi, while he might also be weighing in price in the comparison.

He is a member here and does weigh in from time to time so maybe he'll stop by this thread and answer any questions you may have.

not really questions, but rather, interested in commentary from this group... Well, I suppose it would be good to get clarification, if he has it, on whether he ever found out if he got a bad Steiner M5Xi, as he found the one he had to be less than interesting.

Ilya used to spend a lot more time on the Hide back before it moved to Scout, he is definitely one of the better reviewers out there and his knowledge of optical design is stellar. In fact, it was in large part an old review Ilya had that included the March 3-24x42 and his responses to a post I put on the Hide years ago for Low weight low light tactical scopes that I finally bit the bullet and bought my first March. After a quick review of his review and having some of the scopes he reviews I would say his conclusions are very close to mine. I have to say this, I have so much wanted to like that Leupold Mark 6 3-18 but almost every time it is reviewed something is wrong and for that reason I have always shy'd away from it (that and the fact that Leupold tends to be overpriced compared to competition that offer better optics and mechanics). I would have liked to have seen him add the Schmidt Ultra Short 5-20 or 3-20 as I think that would fit his Cruiserweight requirement, and I hoped to hear more about his thoughts on the Bushnell as I recently acquired an LRTS 4.5-18x44 that continues to impress me especially in its optical quality and I'd be curious how he thought it compared to the Nightforce ATACR F1 4-16x42 and Sig and Leupy with smaller objectives.

I have to fully agree with you there. It looks so good, and has the right magnification, but Ilya is spot-on. Just not worth the money.

Another good set to compare !
